Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Quarterly Review, Vol. 19: Nos. For June and September, 1869 If these changes were confined to the authors, artists and works of the present day, they could easily be accounted for. It might be alleged, without much injustice, that in the mid dle of the nineteenth century fame is bought and sold like any other commodity; although a considerable share of it is often obtained by impudence alone, without either talent, or education; so that those who have most money, or most impudence may reasonably calculate on securing most fame in a given time. If the money and impudence are combined, as they very generally are, in such cases, then the aspirant for fame has to wait but a short time for the full gratification of his ambition. True, the fame gained in this manner is not the genuine article; it is quite as spurious as the reputation of the quack doctor, who by means of the same pill, bolus, or bottle, undertakes to cure all diseases that flesh is heir to. But there are none of the vicissitudes to which we allude in the fame of this class of authors or artists when their fame is once obscured it never regains its lustre; once dead it has no resurrection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Quarterly Review, Vol. 16: For December, 1867, and March, 1868 The number of portraits, then, cannot be regarded as a safe criterion of the esteem in which an Athenian author was held by his contemporaries. Human nature being the same at all times, one was doubtless as liable to be deceived in enter ing an Athenian studio in the time Of Menander, as he would be today in entering a photograph gallery in Broadway. In the latter he would find twenty authors of the lowest or worst class - mere pretenders - for one of the higher or even third class - one who is entitled to be ranked in any class. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brownson's Quarterly Review, Vol. 1: January, 1864 With this number we commence a new series of our Review. Henceforth the Review is to be national and sec ula1, devoted to philosophy, science, politics, literature, and the general interests of civilization, especially American civilization. It ceases to be a theological Review, and though it will defend religion, and prove itself in the prin ciples which govern it truly Christian, it will defend the special interests of the Catholic Church only as they are implied ln the freedom of conscience and the religious and civil liberty of the citizen. The Editor has not changed his faith, or abated ln his zeal for the Communion to which he has been warmly attached for the last twenty years, and whose doctrine and discipline he has labored as well as he could to explain and defend but, for reasons satisfactory to himself, he Withdraws his Review from the field of theologi. Cal discussion and sectarian controversy, and restricts it for the future to those great public questions and gene1al inter ests of Ch1istian civilization, which can be fully discussed without trenching upon auv ground debated between Catho lics and Protestants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Western Quarterly Review, 1849, Vol. 1 We come, therefore, in behalf of personal independence, and ask each to think for himself, feel for himself, and act for himself. Reader, you are good against the world. You have as much right to ask the million to hear you, as the million have to demand your attention. We have no cord to bind you with - no collar of our own construction to place on your neck. Here you may preserve your identity - appear as God made you, and not be compelled to suppress your thoughts or feel ings, and thus in part annihilate yourself. Come, then, as you are - open the fountains of your own Spiritual life, that we may see who you are, and what there is in you, that the world should know. We would not abridge your liberty, and we dare not sit in judgment and condemn you, for you may prove, in the light of that unerring Wisdom which is eternal in the Heavens, far above us in all that is pure and true. The Western Quarterly Review comes also to act a part, in these unsettled times, in the construction of truthful institutions. It shall criticise things as they are, and spare not. It shall ex pose, with an unflinching probe, whatever is believed unsound and untruthful, no matter how consecrated it may be in the affections of its supporters. We only say to them, that the way is Open, the same channel is free to them, to repair, if possible, whatever breach any assault may occasion.
