Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Gallery, Vol. 1 The arrangement of the pictures, which is strictly alphabetical, follows that of the Official Catalogue; the descriptions also are taken direct from the same source. They have been occasionally cut down where the page did not afford room for the whole text, and in some few cases they have been slightly amplified. An essential feature of the work is that the descriptions of the pictures invariably (with a single exception) face the illustrations on the opposite page, thus avoiding the careless and tiresome arrangement, only too common in works of this character, where the illustration is only to be found on a page far removed from the text which treats of it. The exception is on p. 8 5, where it was thought undesirable to so abbreviate the explanations of the four allegorical subjects by Paul Veronese as to bring in that of the fourth picture, which is accordingly relegated to the succeeding page. The exception will serve to indicate the care with which the whole work has been carried out. The arrangement of the illustrations was a matter of some difficulty; and it was not always found possible to avoid an awkward page, more particularly where pictures of different shapes are gathered together in the same group. The rule adopted for the scale of the illustrations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Gallery IN 1831 some justification existed for Coleridge's sweeping assertion that the darkest despotisms on the Continent have done more for the growth and elevation of the fine arts than the English government. Most of the great European galleries - the Louvre, the Hermitage, the Prado and almost all the galleries of Germany - had their origin in the collections of amiable despots. They were thrown Open to the public by the democratic governments of the nineteenth cen tury, less despotic perhaps, but unquestionably less amiable so far as art was concerned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Portrait Gallery, Vol. 1 The Illustrated Catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery may be considered as a fitting sequel to the Illustrated Catalogue of the National Gallery, published by Messrs. Cassell and Company in 1899. The National Portrait Gallery was founded in 1856, and was at first housed in temporary premises at 29, Great George Street, Westminster. In 1869 the collection was removed to the eastern portion of the Long Building at South Kensington, where it remained until the autumn of 1885, when, owing to increased danger from fire, the collection was transferred on temporary loan to the Science and Art Department at the Bethnal Green Museum. Although this was intended to be but a temporary measure, no steps were taken to provide this interesting collection with a permanent home, or seemed at all likely to be taken, until May, 1889, when William Henry Alexander, Esq., of Shipton, Andover, Hants, generously offered to build a National Portrait Gallery at his own expense. This offer having been accepted by h.m. Government, a site was allotted in St. Martin's Place in the rear of the National Gallery, and the new building commenced in October, 1890. The new Gallery was completed in April, 1895, Mr. Alexander contributing to its cost and hm. Government f The collection was then moved into-the new building, and the Gallery opened to the public on Saturday, April 4th, 1896.
