Book excerpt: The NASAL notched flat method for determining compressive strength of filament wound materials is described. Data are presented for a series of tests, in which a number of different methods of grip construction were employed, indicating good reproducibility, with an overall coefficient of variation of 4.9%. For a material of 2:1 orthogonal construction, with S glass reinforcement, an average compressive strength value of 157,800 psi was obtained in the stronger ('2') direction. This value is within 5% of the average value reported for tests on cylindrical specimens, of similar construction, tested hydrostatically. Very recent data for a material of superior quality, tested by the NASL notched flat method, gave an average value of compressive strength in the '2' direction of 178,000 psi, with an individual high of 192,800 psi. Based on these data, it is believed that laminates of this type may be produced with present day materials which will have compressive strengths of 200,000 psi or higher. (Author).

Book excerpt: "This standard defines a method to be used to determine the compression strength of a notched, unnoticed and filled hole fibre reinforced plastics. It is applicable to composite laminates with unidirectional layers or woven fabric reinforcement. This standard does not give any direction necessary to meet health and safety requirements. It is the responsibility of the user of this statement to consult and establish appropriate health and safety precautions."--Scope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to predict and control viscous flow phenomena is becoming increasingly important in modern industrial application. The Instability and Transition Workshop at Langley was extremely important in help§ ing the scientists community to access the state of knowledge in the area of transition from laminar to turbulent flow, to identify promising future areas of research and to build future interactions between researchers worldwide working in the areas of theoretical, experimental and computational fluid and aero dynamics. The set of two volume contains panel discussions and research contribution with the following objectives: (1) expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of instability and transitions in shear flows over the entire speed range, (2) acquaint the academic community with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these facilities. (3) review current state-of-the-art and propose future directions for instability and transition research, (4) accelerate progress in elucidating basic understanding of transition phenomena and in transferring this knowledge into improved design methodologies through improved transition modeling, and (5) establish mechanism for continued interaction.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Plasticity by : N. Cristescu
Download or read book Dynamic Plasticity written by N. Cristescu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Plasticity discusses the problems encountered in the theory of dynamic deformation of plastic bodies. The book describes one-dimensional problems involving a single component of stress, particle velocity, and single spatial coordinate. The propagation of longitudinal elastic-plastic waves in thin rods or wires is a simple example of this problem of dynamic plasticity. Another one-dimensional problem, which has various possible transverse motions, is the dynamics of extensible strings. This problem is associated in calculations dealing with cables of suspension bridges, of elevator cables, of electric cables. The analogy with the mechanics of extensible strings can be extended to circular and rectangular membranes such as explained by Karunes and Onat. Karunes and Onat analyzed the propagation of transverse and longitudinal shock waves in such membranes using the Rakhmatulin theory for strings. The text also discusses axi-symmetrical problems and the problems of soil mechanics when applied to soft soils. The book can prove valuable to civil engineers, structural engineers, physicist, and students of mechanical engineering or industrial design.
Book Synopsis Studies of Vortex Dominated Flows by : M.Y. Hussaini
Download or read book Studies of Vortex Dominated Flows written by M.Y. Hussaini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the astrophysical scale of a swirling spiral galaxy, through the geophysical scale of a hurricane, down to the subatomic scale of elementary particles, vortical motion and vortex dynamics have played a profound role in our understanding of the physical world. Kuchemann referred to vortex dynamics as "the sinews and muscles of fluid motion. " In order to update our understanding of vortex dominated flows, NASA Langley Research Center and the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) conducted a workshop during July 9-11, 1985. The subject was broadly divided into five overlapping topics vortex dynamics, vortex breakdown, massive separation, vortex shedding from sharp leading edges and conically separated flows. Some of the experts in each of these areas were invited to provide an overview of the subject. This volume is the proceedings of the workshop and contains the latest, theoretical, numerical, and experimental work in the above-mentioned areas. Leibovich, Widnall, Moore and Sirovich discussed topics on the fundamentals of vortex dynamics, while Keller and Hafez treated the problem of vortex break down phenomena; the contributions of Smith, Davis and LeBalleur were in the area of massive separation and inviscid-viscous interactions, while those of Cheng, Hoeijmakers and Munnan dealt with sharp-leading-edge vortex flows; and Fiddes and Marconi represented the category of conical separated flows.

The reader is then introduced to the basic principles of the liquefaction of hydrogen; hydrogen liquefiers of moderate size; the use of liquid hydrogen as a coolant/propellant for nuclear rockets; and separation of deuterium by the large-scale distillation of liquid hydrogen. Subsequent chapters explore liquid hydrogen engines and bubble chambers; safety considerations in the use of liquid hydrogen; and properties of normal and para-hydrogen. This monograph will be of interest to chemists.
