Book excerpt: In Paris, on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, an old man suddenly vanishes without a trace: a new plague has reached France, and will soon grow to terrible proportions. The event is witnessed by a cytologist working at the Aristotle Institute, who is also a Polyplast--the result of an experiment in selective breeding intended to produce pacifists, but which has also had perverse results. As a result of his presence at the crucial event, the Polyplast becomes a privileged observer of the entire tragedy, of which he naturally sets out to write a personalized history, explaining how the new plague became the casus belli of yet another war in an endless series, fought with the aid of "Archimedes": powerful, long-range weapons that would destroy the world in no time were it not for their habit of misfiring, and only killing tens of thousands of people instead of millions. The Napus, first published in 1927, remains one of the classics of absurdist science fiction.
Book Synopsis The Brassica napus Genome by : Shengyi Liu
Download or read book The Brassica napus Genome written by Shengyi Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how the genome sequence contributes to our understanding of allopolyploidisation and the genome evolution, genetic diversity, complex trait regulation and knowledge-based breeding of this important crop. Numerous examples demonstrate how widespread homoeologous genome rearrangements and exchanges have moulded structural genome diversity following a severe polyploidy bottleneck. The allopolyploid crop species Brassica napus has the most highly duplicated plant genome to be assembled to date, with the largest number of annotated genes. Examples are provided for use of the genome sequence to identify and capture diversity for important agronomic traits, including seed quality and disease resistance. The increased potential for detailed gene discovery using high-density genetic mapping, quantitative genetics and transcriptomic analyses is described in the context of genome availability and illustrated with recent examples. Intimate knowledge of the highly-duplicated gene space, on the one hand, and the repeat landscape on the other, particularly in comparison to the two diploid progenitor genomes, provide a fundamental basis for new insights into the regulatory mechanisms that are coupled with selection for polyploid success and crop evolution.

Book Synopsis Sustainable strategies for managing Brassica napus (oilseed rape) resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans (phoma stem canker) by : B.D.L. Fitt
Download or read book Sustainable strategies for managing Brassica napus (oilseed rape) resistance to Leptosphaeria maculans (phoma stem canker) written by B.D.L. Fitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-10 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of phoma stem canker in oil rapeseed crops typically depends on cultivars resistant to L. Maculans, the virus that causes it. Recently, virus populations have overcome resistance, causing serious canker outbreaks in Australia and Europe. There is an urgent need to find sources of resistance to L. maculans. This book synthesizes studies in management of resistance genes control L. maculans, and will stimulate further research on this important model system.
Book Synopsis Molecular Marker Systems in Plant Breeding and Crop Improvement by : Horst Lörz
Download or read book Molecular Marker Systems in Plant Breeding and Crop Improvement written by Horst Lörz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful release of new and better crop varieties increasingly requires genomics and molecular biology. This volume presents basic information on plant molecular marker techniques from marker location up to gene cloning. The text includes a description of technical approaches in genome analysis such as comparison of marker systems, positional cloning, and array techniques in 19 crop plants. A special section focuses on converting this knowledge into general and specific breeding strategies, particularly in relation to biotic stress. Theory and practice of marker assisted selection for QTL, gene pyramiding and the future of MAS are summarized and discussed for maize, wheat, and soybean. Furthermore, approaches in silviculture on the examples of Fagus, Populus, Eucalyptus, Picea and Abies are presented. The volume ends with a comprehensive review of the patents relevant for using molecular markers and marker assisted selection.
