Book excerpt: Native Americans established settlement areas on the coastal areas of Massachusetts, including Nantucket Island and Martha's Vineyard Island on a seasonal basis. The three principal tribes were the Massachusetts (or Naticks), the Nipmucks, and the Wampanoags when the first European Pilgrims arrived in 1659. The island sachems (chiefs) negotiated deeds, drawn up by the newcomers, related to grazing rights, use of commons, and rights to own horses and hunt pilot whales in the shallows. Martha's Vineyard was purchased by Thomas Mayhew in 1642. Nantucket was purchased and divided into lots accordingly. Eventually, the Native American's claim to Nantucket Island ended with the White's ownership. Many male Wampanoag were sold into slavery in Bermuda or the West Indies, or on plantations and farms run by colonists in New England. This book, "The Last Indians Of Nantucket Island" lays out the history and expulsion of the Indians of Nantucket.

Here, author Frances Ruley Karttunen introduces us to the original Nantucketers -- the Wampanoags -- as well as to African slaves, Pacific Islanders, Irish refugees, Azoreans, and Cape Verdeans who over the years have found a home on Nantucket. Here, too, is a look at the island's connection to Jamaica, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia -- all sources of people who have contributed to the island's economy and added dimensions to Nantucket's culture" -- Back cover.

Book excerpt: A book about a tiny island with a huge history, from the New York Times bestselling author of Valiant Ambition and In the Hurricane's Eye. “For everyone who loves Nantucket Island this is the indispensable book.” —Russell Baker In his first book of history, Nathaniel Philbrick reveals the people and the stories behind what was once the whaling capital of the world. Beyond its charm, quaint local traditions, and whaling yarns, Philbrick explores the origins of Nantucket in this comprehensive history. From the English settlers who thought they were purchasing a “Native American ghost town” but actually found a fully realized society, through the rise and fall of the then thriving whaling industry, the story of Nantucket is a truly unique chapter of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the Frontier tells the story of the Indians in Massachusetts as English settlements encroached on their traditional homeland between 1675 and 1775, from King Philip?s War to the Battle of Bunker Hill. Daniel R. Mandell explores how local needs and regional conditions shaped an Indian ethnic group that transcended race, tribe, village, and clan, with a culture that incorporated new ways while maintaining a core of "Indian" customs. He examines the development of Native American communities in eastern Massachusetts, many of which survive today, and observes emerging patterns of adaptation and resistance that were played out in different settings as the American nation grew westward in the nineteenth century.
