Book Synopsis The Men in My Country by : Marilyn Abildskov
Download or read book The Men in My Country written by Marilyn Abildskov and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, at the watershed age of thirty, Marilyn Abildskov decided she needed to start over. She accepted an offer to move from Utah to Matsumoto, Japan, to teach English to junior high school students. “All I knew is that I had to get away and when I stared at my name on the Japanese contract, the squiggles of katakana, my name typed in English sturdily beneath, I liked how it looked. As if it—as if I—were translated, transformed, emerging now as someone new.” The Men in My Country is the story of an American woman living and loving in Japan. Satisfied at first to observe her exotic surroundings, the woman falls in love with the place, with the light, with the curve of a river, with the smell of bonfires during obon, with blue and white porcelain dishes, with pencil boxes, and with small origami birds. Later, struggling for a deeper connection—“I wanted the country under my skin”—Abildskov meets the three men who will be part of her transformation and the one man with whom she will fall deeply in love. A travel memoir offering an artful depiction of a very real place, The Men in My Country also covers the terrain of a complex emotional journey, tracing a geography of the heart, showing how we move to be moved, how in losing ourselves in a foreign place we can become dangerously—and gloriously—undone.

Book Synopsis The Colors of My Country by : Esther Lee Barron
Download or read book The Colors of My Country written by Esther Lee Barron and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unsure of where I belong geographically, I grow in personal identity. In myself, I find a blending of nations and the intersection of culture. What pleasure to think that perhaps I am my own country!" What begins as a compilation of memories morphs into a broader analysis of transition when one moves from country to country or stays in one place and encounters an unexpected variety of people otherwise presumed to be like oneself. The writing examines a personal journey of cultural assimilation, maneuvering through nuances of acceptable language and social rituals followed by feeling the loss of friends and place when heading to yet another unfamiliar location. Questions arise about one's worth when geographical roots are perceived as unattainable and identity seems as fragmented as the mosaic of cultural influences. Herein lies hope that perspective gained through the passing of years helps to seal the quandaries with stability and that home can be found in loving people and faith in God. Grace be upon those whose children have chosen global citizenship, continents away from their nomadic parents, and offspring whose hands are raised to heaven for sustenance, far from the warmth of what is familiar.

Book Synopsis Your Country, My Country by : Robert Bothwell
Download or read book Your Country, My Country written by Robert Bothwell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book might almost be entitled Canadians in the Attic. Canada is the United States' forgotten twin, the country that resembles the United States more than any other, and that shares a history with America that goes back to the seventeenth century, and that includes the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the anti-slavery movement, to name only a few. Canada is in a way a measure of, a barometer of, American exceptionalism. What happens in Canada is often a reflection of what has happened in the United States, but by the same token, what happens in Canada is often a sign of what could happen in its American neighbor. While the two countries have distinct political systems, and particular histories, ideologically they are closer together than standard Canadian histories suggest. (Canadians are left out of standard American histories.) Arguably, Canada is the part of North America where the New Deal came to fruition in the 1960s, when it was frustrated in the United States. But no American political idea fails to penetrate Canada, and in the 2000s many Canadians, including the current Canadian government, seek to imitate or replicate the hard-right turn in American politics. From whatever direction, the Canadian experience illuminates American experience-- and vice-versa"--

Book Synopsis On My Country and the World by : Mikhail Gorbachev
Download or read book On My Country and the World written by Mikhail Gorbachev and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-24 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the whole sweep of the Soviet experiment and experience as told by its last steward. Drawing on his own experience, rich archival material, and a keen sense of history and politics, Mikhail Gorbachev speaks his mind on a range of subjects concerning Russia's past, present, and future place in the world. Here is Gorbachev on the October Revolution, Gorbachev on the Cold War, and Gorbachev on key figures such as Lenin, Stalin, and Yeltsin. The book begins with a look back at 1917. While noting that tsarist Russia was not as backward as it is often portrayed, Gorbachev argues that the Bolshevik Revolution was inevitable and that it did much to modernize Russia. He strongly argues that the Soviet Union had a positive influence on social policy in the West, while maintaining that the development of socialism was cut short by Stalinist totalitarianism. In the next section, Gorbachev considers the fall of the USSR. What were the goals of perestroika? How did such a vast superpower disintegrate so quickly? From the awakening of ethnic tensions, to the inability of democrats to unite, to his own attempts to reform but preserve the union, Gorbachev retraces those fateful days and explains the origins of Russia's present crises. But Gorbachev does not just train his critical eye on the past. He lays out a blueprint for where Russia needs to go in the twenty-first century, suggesting ways to strengthen the federation and achieve meaningful economic and political reforms. In the final section of the book, Gorbachev examines the "new thinking" in foreign policy that helped to end the Cold War and shows how such approaches could help resolve a range of crises, including NATO expansion, the role of the UN, the fate of nuclear weapons, and environmental problems. On My Country and the World reveals the unique vision of a man who was a powerful actor on the world stage and remains a keen observer of Russia's experience in the twentieth century. This anniversary edition features a new foreword by William Taubman, award-winning biographer of Khrushchev and Gorbachev.
