After suffering a great personal tragedy, Chokyi Dronma renounced her royal status to become a nun, and, in turn, the tantric consort of three outstanding religious masters of her era. After her death, Chokyi Dronma's masters and disciples recognized a young girl as her reincarnation, the first in a long, powerful, and influential female lineage. Today, the twelfth Samding Dorje Phagmo leads the Samding monastery and is a high government cadre in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Hildegard Diemberger builds her book around the translation of the first biography of Chokyi Dronma recorded by her disciples in the wake of her death. The account reveals an extraordinary phenomenon: although it had been believed that women in Tibet were not allowed to obtain full ordination equivalent to monks, Chokyi Dronma not only persuaded one of the highest spiritual teachers of her era to give her full ordination but also established orders for other women practitioners and became so revered that she was officially recognized as one of two principal spiritual heirs to her main master. Diemberger offers a number of theoretical arguments about the importance of reincarnation in Tibetan society and religion, the role of biographies in establishing a lineage, the necessity for religious teachers to navigate complex networks of political and financial patronage, the cultural and social innovation linked to the revival of ancient Buddhist civilizations, and the role of women in Buddhism. Four introductory, stage-setting chapters precede the biography, and four concluding chapters discuss the establishment of the reincarnation lineage and the role of the current incarnation under the peculiarly contradictory communist system.

With its analysis of some of the first Tibetan short stories published approximately a decade after the end of the Cultural Revolution it greatly contributes to the scholarly research of the rise of modern Tibetan literature. The image of Tibet that appears in the works of Tibetan authors is there compared with the Chinese representations of Tibet from the same period. The analysis is informed by postcolonial theories of literature and is focused mainly on the stereotypes that appear in representation of Tibet both in China and in the west. The primary aim of this study is to examine the influence of such stereotypes on Tibetan literary negoitations of their own newly reshaped identity. Prostřednictvím analýzy tibetských povídek vznikajících v době počátečního formování moderní tibetské literatury po skončení kulturní revoluce mapuje samotný vznik moderní literatury v Tibetu. Obraz Tibetu, který se objevuje v dílech tibetských autorů, je zde srovnáván s vyobrazením Tibetu v díle čínských autorů tvořících ve stejném období. Analýza vycházející z postkoloniální teorie literatury se zaměřuje především na stereotypy, jež panují v zobrazování Tibetu jak v Číně, tak na Západě, a klade si za cíl posoudit, nakolik tyto stereotypy ovlivňují vlastní představy autorů o "tibetskosti", a nakolik se odrážejí v nově utvářené moderní tibetské identitě.

Book excerpt: The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation, which was unknown to the Western world until its first publication in 1954, speaks to the quintessence of the Supreme Path, or Mah=ay=ana, and fully reveals the yogic method of attaining Enlightenment. Such attainment can happen, as shown here, by means of knowing the One Mind, the cosmic All-Consciousness, without recourse to the postures, breathings, and other techniques associated with the lower yogas. The original text for this volume belongs to the Bardo Thödol series of treatises concerning various ways of achieving transcendence, a series that figures into the Tantric school of the Mah=ay=ana. Authorship of this particular volume is attributed to the legendary Padma-Sambhava, who journeyed from India to Tibet in the 8th century, as the story goes, at the invitation of a Tibetan king. Padma-Sambhava's text per se is preceded by an account of the great guru's own life and secret doctrines. It is followed by the testamentary teachings of the Guru Phadampa Sangay, which are meant to augment the thought of the other gurus discussed herein. Still more useful supplementary material will be found in the book's introductory remarks, by its editor Evans-Wentz and by the eminent psychoanalyst C. G. Jung. The former presents a 100-page General Introduction that explains several key names and notions (such as Nirv=ana, for starters) with the lucidity, ease, and sagacity that are this scholar's hallmark; the latter offers a Psychological Commentary that weighs the differences between Eastern and Western modes of thought before equating the "collective unconscious" with the Enlightened Mind of the Buddhist. As with the other three volumes in the late Evans-Wentz's critically acclaimed Tibetan series, all four of which are being published by Oxford in new editions, this book also features a new Foreword by Donald S. Lopez.
