Book excerpt: This study focuses on the connection between education and the world of work and the urgency of the endeavor to educate the work force. Part I considers the resources for adult learning in the United States, with a focus on the major providers outside the traditional education system. Technological resources that can extend educational opportunities and reach more workers are then analyzed. Examples of each medium's use are given, and its limitations and effectiveness for instruction are charted. One new development is given special attention: artificial intelligence as an aid in training and education. Part II describes workers' training opportunities. It looks first at the skilled trades and technical fields: construction workers, office workers, administrative assistants, information systems technicians, and factory workers encountering computer-integrated manufacturing systems. Next, the education of managers is considered. Finally, updating knowledge of advanced professionals is examined. Examples from various providers show contributions toward available opportunities. Part III deals with those whom training programs fail to reach or serve adequately: dislocated workers, unemployed youth, immigrants and refugees, and welfare recipients. The report concludes that the issues call for public responsibility and action. Federal, state, and private initiatives are urged. Endnotes for each chapter and an index are appended. (YLB)

Download or read book Turkey and the Holocaust written by Stanford J. Shaw and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutrality maintained by Turkey during most of the Second World War enabled it to rescue thousands of Jews from the Holocaust in the Nazi-occupied or collaborating countries of Europe. This book shows how in France, the Turkish consuls in Paris and Marseilles intervened to protect Turkish Jews from application of anti-Jewish laws introduced both by the German occupying authorities and the Vichy government and rescued them from concentration camps, getting them off trains destined for the extermination chambers in the East, and arranging train caravans and other special transportation to take them through Nazi-occupied territory to safety in Turkey. Book Synopsis Classics in the Theory of Public Finance by : Richard A. Musgrave
Download or read book Classics in the Theory of Public Finance written by Richard A. Musgrave and published by Springer. This book was released on 1958-01-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was prepared mainly for specialists on the assumption that it would provide the background to an important neglected field of discussion in public finance. Since it was first published in 1958, the theory of public goods and its implications for public policy have become incorporated in the main body of the economic analysis of public finance in the literature. A glance at the footnotes of some of the standard textbooks on public finance indicates that this assembly of articles has not been in vain. Probably the most influential part of this collection has been the papers concerned with the theory of public expenditure, which contains two closely related elements. The first is as a part of welfare economics: under what conditions can Pareto optimality be achieved in an economic system in which some goods supplied are indivisible? The other strand of thought is concerned with the positive theory of the public sector: how can economic analysis be used in order to explain how the size and composition of the budget is actually determined?

Download or read book Hollow Land written by Eyal Weizman and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the tunnels of Gaza to the militarized airspace of the Occupied Territories, Eyal Weizman unravels Israel's mechanisms of control and its transformation of Palestinian towns, villages and roads into an artifice where all natural and built features serve military ends. Weizman traces the development of this strategy, from the influence of archaeology on urban planning, Ariel Sharon's reconceptualization of military defence during the 1973 war, through the planning and architecture of the settlements, to the contemporary Israeli discourse and practice of urban warfare and airborne targeted assassinations. Hollow Land lays bare the political system at the heart of this complex and terrifying project of late-modern colonial occupation.
