Suddenly a little tiny gray mouse with an exceptionally long tail flew around the edge of the entry way into our living room. He ran like wind along the base board of the room and down into our heating registers and into the heating ducks of our home. I don't believe I have ever seen a mouse with such a long tail. I tried to catch him but was unable to because he was so tiny in his body and lightweight that he could run like the wind with his long, long tail swishing back and forth and from side to side as he ran. This inspired me to make up this story about Sulon the Mouse with His Tail Too Long. I believe this story will be enjoyed by both parents and children and grandparents alike, who will read this book for themselves or to their children or grandchildren. It also teaches us not to be so cruel to others as we never know when their kind behavior is worth more than all our cruel behavior could ever be. Remember in the Bible: Hebrew 13:12, "Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angles unaware."

Clemmie the cat knows everything about how to catch a mouse, and she would prove it, too—except that she’s never actually seen a mouse. Perhaps, she thinks, they’re all afraid of her. But wait . . . is that a pink tail, or a dangling ribbon? A whiskery nose, or a spider’s legs? Kids will love spotting the pesky mouse throughout this sprightly picture book and will root for Clemmie to discover the mouse under her nose once and for all.

Book excerpt: The True Story of a Mouse Who Never Asked for It is a visually striking, deeply feminist, contemporary retelling of a Spanish folk tale, rediscovered and brought to new life by author Ana Cristina Herreros and illustrator Violeta Lopiz. In Herreros and Lopiz's version--which sharply diverges from the most mainstream and popularized telling of the story--a mouse is approached by many suitors, rejecting all but one: a cat, whose gentle meow assures her that he won't bring her harm. But one must remember that a kitten always grows up to be a cat...and thusly, will devour the mouse.

Book excerpt: What happens when the bottlenecks that stand between supply and demand in our culture go away and everything becomes available to everyone? "The Long Tail" is a powerful new force in our economy: the rise of the niche. As the cost of reaching consumers drops dramatically, our markets are shifting from a one-size-fits-all model of mass appeal to one of unlimited variety for unique tastes. From supermarket shelves to advertising agencies, the ability to offer vast choice is changing everything, and causing us to rethink where our markets lie and how to get to them. Unlimited selection is revealing truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it, from DVDs at Netflix to songs on iTunes to advertising on Google. However, this is not just a virtue of online marketplaces; it is an example of an entirely new economic model for business, one that is just beginning to show its power. After a century of obsessing over the few products at the head of the demand curve, the new economics of distribution allow us to turn our focus to the many more products in the tail, which collectively can create a new market as big as the one we already know. The Long Tail is really about the economics of abundance. New efficiencies in distribution, manufacturing, and marketing are essentially resetting the definition of what's commercially viable across the board. If the 20th century was about hits, the 21st will be equally about niches.

By serving them cookies and telling them fantastic fairy tales about his family, of course. There's the story about great-grand uncle Mustard who upgrades his family to a lovely three-bedroom brick house. (All's well until some wolves with snout-warts show up.) And there's the one about how starving Grandma Lois was forced to take a job spinning straw into gold. (Impossible to do . . . until a hairy chimney troll comes along.) With allusions to classic fairy tales, plus a storytelling rat to rival Scheherazade, this book—which also includes black-and-white illustrations, a family tree, and a map of Bob's neighborhood—is sure to hold both cats and kids captive.

Book excerpt: In this imaginative adventure from Newbery Medal–winning author Beverly Cleary, a young mouse named Ralph is thrown into a world of excitement when a boy and his shiny toy motorcycle check in to the Mountain View Inn. When the ever-curious Ralph spots Keith's red toy motorcycle, he vows to ride it. So when Keith leaves the bike unattended in his room one day, Ralph makes his move. But with all this freedom (and speed!) come a lot of obstacles. Whether dodging a rowdy terrier or keeping his nosy cousins away from his new wheels, Ralph has a lot going on! And with a pal like Keith always looking out for him, there's nothing this little mouse can't handle. This timeless classic now features a foreword written by New York Times bestselling author Kate DiCamillo, as well as an exclusive interview with Beverly Cleary herself. The Mouse and the Motorcycle is perfect for independent reading or for shared reading at home or in a classroom. This fun story is the first of a trilogy, along with Runaway Ralph and Ralph S. Mouse, all inspired by the author's hope to create appealing books for boys and girls—and by the sight of her son playing with toy cars.
