Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Most Perfect Cruiser is the story of how the Confederacy got to sea the most deadly of its raiders, the C.S.S. Alabama. It is both a complex and a human tale, one that occurred entirely outside of North America. We encounter the ambitions of the brilliant James Dunwoody Bulloch, the Confederate secret naval agent who brought Alabama into being thinking he would command her; and her resourceful captain, Raphael Semmes, whose previous success had already alarmed the North. As for the Alabama, she began her maiden voyage in the teeth of a rising gale, barely escaping the clutches of a Union warship and the belated efforts of British authorities to seize her. All of these threads culminated in a three-way rendezvous in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, where through a remarkable combination of luck, skill, and hard work, the South commissioned the most successful commerce raider the world has ever known. STEPHEN CHAPIN KINNAMAN is an offshore and marine technology professional with over thirty years of experience. He was born in 1950 and grew up in upstate New York and New Jersey. He and his wife, Maureen, currently reside in Chappell Hill, Texas. In preparation for writing The Most Perfect Cruiser, Stephen Chapin Kinnaman visited all the principal locations touched by Bulloch, Semmes, and Alabama, gaining a first-hand feel for the terrain which shaped Alabama's birth. Mr. Kinnaman was a director of the Mobile, Alabamabased C.S.S. Alabama Association, and as such was involved with aspects of the ongoing wreck recovery efforts in France. He participated in the Association's first field trip to Cherbourg during the summer of 1999. His nautical background and love of the sea has allowed him to craft a spirited account of the operational side of Alabama's creation which is so central to this book. Well known naturalist and environmentalist, John Muir made four trips to Alaska as far as Unalaska, Alaska and Barrow, Alaska. He first traveled to Alaska in 1879 and was the first Euro-American to explore Glacier Bay. Muir Glacier was later named after him. He returned for further explorations in Southeast Alaska in 1880, and in 1881 was with the party that landed on Wrangel Island on the USS Corwin and claimed that island for the United States. He documented this experience in journal entries and newspaper articles—later compiled and edited into his book The Cruise of the Corwin. Travels in Alaska and Stickeen are also Muir's books about his doings and adventures in Alaska. Table of Contents: Travels in Alaska The Cruise of the Corwin Stickeen: The Story of a Dog Alaska Days with John Muir by Samuel Hall Young John Muir (1838-1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. Book excerpt: Antonia a simple provincial girl, positive, always with smile on your lips and sense of humor so much, with a million impossible dreams and many complex details from everyday life. That does not still knows nothing about life and was about to lose it for a stupid reason, and meanwhile she has walked on clouds, testing the impossible. To the point that one day takes a decision that usually does not belong, risking life. I slept for over two days, because of a combination of pills, as the doctor said. During these two days the impossible happened, the unimaginable. A guardian angel was next to she the whole time I was asleep, watching on she, making it possible for me to come back home, and allowing me live a fairy tale at the same time. My story, Antonia and Tommy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lin and Larry Pardey have now been cruising on board their own boats, racing, delivering, and repairing other people’s boats for more than 44 years. After west-to-east and east-to-west circumnavigations, and voyages to more than 75 countries, they have a breadth of knowledge that few other boating authors possess. Most of the voyaging has been done on an earn-as-you-go budget that could be well within the reach of the majority of those whose dream is to set sail. Their motto? “Go small, go simple, but go now!” The Pardeys’ strengths are neatly symbolized by the boats they have built. Each one is romantically traditional, with swooping sheerlines, and is completely dependent on the wind. And yet each boat carries the best, strongest, and most seamanlike gear. Like their vessels, the Pardeys’ writings are founded on a marriage of the spirit of romantic adventure and the practical, up-to-date seamanship that keeps them and their boats safe. This revised and expanded third edition of a cruising classic includes 10 completely new chapters with such advice as: sixteen ways to encourage your lover (partner) to share your dream; strategies for turning sudden engine failure into a minor incident; choosing safety equipment; repairing rigging at sea. All of the original chapters have been updated to ensure that the information will be helpful for everyone who dreams of cruising—whether now or soon. The Capable Cruiser is a logical extension of the Pardeys’ The Self-Sufficient Sailor, with more emphasis on seamanship underway, including careful analysis of extreme anchoring situations and solutions for mitigating them. Underlying each and every chapter is the warmth and encouragement that spurred Herb McCormick, former editor of Cruising World magazine, to label Lin and Larry Pardey “the enablers.”
