Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the design and internals of the MOSIX distributed operating system. MOSIX, an acronym for Multicomputer Operating System for UNIX, integrates a cluster of loosely integrated computers into a virtual single-machine UNIX environment. The main property of MOSIX is the high degree of integration among the processors, which may include personal workstations and shared memory and non-shared memory multiprocessors, connected by fast communication links. This integration includes network transparency, cooperation between the processors to provide services across machine boundaries, support of dynamic configuration, and system-initiated load balancing by process migration. Another property of MOSIX is the ability to scale up the system configuration to encompass a large number of computers. The development of MOSIX was begun in 1981. The book is intended primarily for readers who are interested in distributed and multiprocessor systems. The reader is assumed to have some knowledge in programming and operating systems, preferably UNIX. Readers without this background will still benefit from thetechniques and algorithms discussed.

Book excerpt: Parallel processing offers a solution to the problem of providing the processing power necessary to help understand and master the complexity of natural phenomena and engineering structures. By taking several basic processing devices and connecting them together the potential exists of achieving a performance many times that of an individual device. However, building parallel application programs is today recognized as a highly complex activity requiring specialist skills and in-depth knowledge. PARLE is an international, European based conference which focuses on the parallel processing subdomain of informatics and information technology. It is intended to become THE European forum for interchange between experts in the parallel processing domain and to attract both industrial and academic participants with a technical programme designedto provide a balance between theory and practice. This volume contains the proceedings of PARLE '93. The PARLE conference came into existence in 1987 as an initiative from the ESPRIT I programme and the format was revised in 1991/92. PARLE '93 is the second conference with the new format and was held in Munich.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the twelfth Ada-Europe conference, held in France in 1993. The French name "Ada sans fronti res" (the only French words in the book) symbolizes the unlimitedness and novelty of Ada, as well as Europe-wide interest. Many papers relate to Ada-9X, the new standard that the Ada coimmunity is close to achieving after worldwide consultation and debate about requirements, specification, anddetailed definition. Their focus is on management, real-time, and compiler validation. Part of the conference was on object orientation, together with various issues relating to the general structure of the language, including exceptions to a certain use of genericity and heterogeneous data, efficiency, formal requirements and CASEs, and comparison with a competitor language. A third part relates to real-time, past with performance measurement, present with certification andapplications, and future with the ExTRA project and 9X.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neural computation arises from the capacity of nervous tissue to process information and accumulate knowledge in an intelligent manner. Conventional computational machines have encountered enormous difficulties in duplicatingsuch functionalities. This has given rise to the development of Artificial Neural Networks where computation is distributed over a great number of local processing elements with a high degree of connectivityand in which external programming is replaced with supervised and unsupervised learning. The papers presented in this volume are carefully reviewed versions of the talks delivered at the International Workshop on Artificial Neural Networks (IWANN '93) organized by the Universities of Catalonia and the Spanish Open University at Madrid and held at Barcelona, Spain, in June 1993. The 111 papers are organized in seven sections: biological perspectives, mathematical models, learning, self-organizing networks, neural software, hardware implementation, and applications (in five subsections: signal processing and pattern recognition, communications, artificial vision, control and robotics, and other applications).

The objective of the international workshop series WSA is to serve as a forum for the discussion of the various aspects of static analysis in different programming paradigms. The clearly increasing mumbers of submitted papers and workshop participants point out the growing importance of static analysis techniques for logical, functional, concurrent and parallel languages as well as for parallel term rewriting systems. This proceedings contains, besides the abstracts or full papers of the invited talks given by Pascal Van Hentenryck, Peter van Roy, and Paul Hudak, full versions of the 20 contributed papers selected from a total of 68 submissions by an international program committee consisting of many renown researchers in the field. The volume is organized in sections on fixpoint computation, concurrency, parallelism, transformation, logic programs, term rewriting systems, strictness, reasoning about programs, and types.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers, updated in some cases, presented at the first AISMC (Artificial Intelligence and Symbolic Mathematical Computations)conference, held in Karlsruhe, August 3-6, 1992. This was the first conference to be devoted to such a topic after a long period when SMC made no appearance in AI conferences, though it used to be welcome in the early days of AI. Some conferences were held recently on mathematics and AI, but none was directly comparable in scope to this conference. Because of the novelty of the domain, authors were given longer allocations of time than usual in which to present their work. As a result, extended and fruitful discussions followed each paper. The introductory chapter in this book, which was not presented during the conference, reflects in many ways the flavor of these discussions and aims to set out the framework for future activities in this domain of research. In addition to the introduction, the volume contains 20 papers.

The symposium is intended to launchan annual series of international conferences, held in early fall, covering the field of algorithms. Within the scope of the symposium lies all research on algorithms, theoretical as well as applied, that is carried out in the fields of computer science and discrete applied mathematics. The symposium aims to cater to both of these research communities and to intensify the exchange between them. The volume contains 35 contributed papers selected from 101 proposals submitted in response to the call for papers, as well as three invited lectures: "Evolution of an algorithm" by Michael Paterson, "Complexity of disjoint paths problems in planar graphs" by Alexander Schrijver, and "Sequence comparison and statistical significance in molecular biology" by Michael S. Two months later, in November 2004, the first CoreGRID Integra tion Workshop was held within the framework of the prestigious international Dagstuhl seminars. CoreGRID aims at strengthening and advancing long-term research, knowledge transfer and integration in the area of Grid and Peer-to- Peer technologies. CoreGRID is a Network of Excellence - a new type of project within the European 6th Framework Programme, to ensure progressive evolution and durable integration of the European Grid research community. To achieve this objective, CoreGRID brings together a critical mass of we- established researchers and doctoral students from forty-two institutions that have constructed an ambitious joint programme of activities. Although excellence is a goal to which CoreGRID is committed, durable integration is our main concern. It means that CoreGRID has to carry out activ ities to improve the effectiveness of European research in Grid by coordinating and adapting the participants' activities in Grid research, to share resources such as Grid testbeds, to encourage exchange of research staff and students, and to ensure close collaboration and wide dissemination of its results to the international community. Organising CoreGRID Integration Workshops is one of the activities that aims at identifying and promoting durable collaboration between partners involved in the network.
