Download or read book The Moselle written by Jean Cermakian and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1975-12-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Moselle has been one of the main arteries of European Communication and transportation for centuries. The Romans used it as a main thoroughfare from southern to northern Europe and also began the improvements to its navigation that have continued intermittently through the industrial revolution to the present day. Professor Cermakian focuses on the historical, political, and geographical factors in the use and canalization of this international river – a focus that is derived from his interest in the details of standardizing transport networks and policy as an important part of 'European integration,' which he sees both as a long historical movement and as a present endeavour under EEC. The book offers a history of the political economy of an important river, a symbol for many of the spirit of Europe. (University of Toronto Department of Geography Research Publications 14)

Book Synopsis The Moselle Cycle Route by : Mike Wells
Download or read book The Moselle Cycle Route written by Mike Wells and published by Cicerone Press Limited. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook provides 14 stages of route description to cycling along the Moselle river, a route that offers stunning scenery, plentiful accommodation and places to eat and drink, and straightforward cycling throughout. A well-waymarked, generally downhill 512km route, it is mostly off-road and on well-surfaced cycle tracks (mainly asphalt) with virtually no gradients, and the majority is along the riverbank or on canal towpaths. From its source in the Vosges Mountains of eastern France, the Moselle flows through the French region of Lorraine and crosses into Luxembourg then into the German Rheinland region before it reaches its confluence with the Rhine at the west German city of Koblenz. Suitable for both veteran long-distance cyclists and for newcomers to cycle touring who wish to start with an easy-to-follow journey, the route can be completed in a week by fit cyclists, cycling two stages per day. Two weeks allow for alternative stages and optional excursions through the Saar and Rhine gorges and to visit the Boucles de Moselle and the city of Luxembourg, and give enough time for sightseeing and a leisurely riding pace.

Book excerpt: This historical book recounts the history of Trêves. Trêves is without doubt one of the most ancient towns in Europe: so ancient in fact that its foundation has been attributed to one Trebeta, the step-son of Semiramis, the Assyrian empress, whose story resembles that of Bellerophon in the Greek legend. But nothing is historically known of Trêves till the Roman times. Then the chief city of the Treviri became under the empire the metropolis of the north. It is said to have contained more than 100,000 inhabitants, and this is by no means incredible when the extent of the old Roman wall is taken into consideration.

Book Synopsis United States Army in WWII - Europe - the Lorraine Campaign by : Charles B. MacDonald
Download or read book United States Army in WWII - Europe - the Lorraine Campaign written by Charles B. MacDonald and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 51 maps and 71 illustrations] This volume deals with the campaign waged by the Third Army in Lorraine during the period 1 September-18 December 1944. The present volume is concerned with the tactical operations of the Third Army and its subordinate units. The story of command and decision in higher headquarters is told only when it has a direct bearing on the campaign in Lorraine. The logistics of this campaign likewise have been subordinated to the tactical narrative. The basic unit in the present narrative is the infantry or armored division. The story of the division has been told in terms of its regiments and battalions, but swerves on occasion to the company or the platoon, just as the operations themselves turned on the exploits of these smaller units. Attention has been focused throughout the volume on the combat formations actually in the line. It is hoped, however, that the reader will gain some impression of the vital combination of arms and services which in the long run bring the infantry and the tanks to victory.
Book Synopsis Patton Versus the Panzers by : Steven Zaloga
Download or read book Patton Versus the Panzers written by Steven Zaloga and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1944 Hitler ordered an attack on Gen. George Patton's Third Army, which was deep inside France making for the Rhine and threatening the German industrial heartland beyond. The ensuing battle near Arracourt--the U.S. Army's largest tank-versus-tank clash until the Bulge--went badly for the Germans, who committed their armor piecemeal and whose offensive was shattered in a series of intense, close-range tank duels with the Americans. Armor expert Steven Zaloga deftly reconstructs the battle and shows how American Sherman tanks bested superior German Panthers.
