Book excerpt: The Moscow Trials of August, 1936, January, 1937, and March, 1938, are generally regarded as frame-ups of innocent defendants. But there has never been any evidence that this is so. The present book submits the Moscow Trials to a careful study, in the light of the large amount of primary-source materials now available from the former Soviet archives and the Leon Trotsky archives at Harvard and the Hoover Institution. It concludes that the Moscow Trials were not frame-ups of innocent men. On the contrary: they were genuine trials, in that the defendants testified as they wished to testify. The Moscow Trials testimony, therefore, is valid evidence, and the conspiracies to which the defendants pleaded guilty really did exist.

Book excerpt: The Harvard Trotsky Archive was opened to researchers in 1980. In it, researchers found evidence that Leon Trotsky deliberately lied many times and about many people and events. Other evidence of Trotsky's lies comes from his own writings and in documents from former Soviet archives. This new archival information allows us to verify the testimony of defendants in the three public Moscow Trials of 1936, 1937, and 1938; in his writings on the December, 1934 assassination of Sergei Kirov; and to the Dewey Commission in 1937.The results of this research reveal much about Trotsky's conspiracies in the 1930s.

The Nuremberg Trials (IMT), most notable for their aim to bring perpetrators of Nazi war crimes to justice in the wake of World War II, paved the way for global conversations about genocide, justice, and human rights that continue to this day. As Francine Hirsch reveals in this new history of the trials, a central part of the story has been ignored or forgotten: the critical role the Soviet Union played in making them happen in the first place. While there were practical reasons for this omission--until recently, critical Soviet documents about Nuremberg were buried in the former Soviet archives, and even Russian researchers had limited access--Hirsch shows that there were political reasons as well. The Soviet Union was regarded by its wartime Allies not just as a fellow victor but a rival, and it was not in the interests of the Western powers to highlight the Soviet contribution to postwar justice"--

Included are first hand accounts of the events that unfolded during the trials. We here from noted American and Soviet authors Sam Darcy, Earl Browder, Alexander Bittelman, E. Yaroslavsky, Israel Amter, and William Z. Foster.
