Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1949, this book tells the story of a Southern white girl and her reaction when she discovers that her unborn child will inherit Negro blood. Bentley Carr grew up without knowing she was a very pretty girl. Daughter of a seamstress in a Mississippi town, she felt overwhelmed when she became the bride of Philip Churston of Cedar Bluff plantation. She was happy when she knew she was to bear him a child. Happy—until she discovered why the whisper ran about the Churstons: a strain of Negro blood in the family! That was why Philip was cold to the coming heir; why there were never any visitors at Cedar Bluff. Her dilemma faced her starkly: must she, too, learn to live a lie? “Grace in the writing, warm appreciation of the emotional involvements, and of the relationship between background and action....”—W. K. Rugg, Christian Science Monitor

Book excerpt: Alan and Audrey Taylor are an ordinary married couple raising three children and coping with the demands of busy careers when the unthinkable happens: their eldest daughter, Isabel, on the verge of precocious womanhood, goes missing in the middle of the night. Thus begins this intimate portrait of a barely functioning family as Alan, Audrey and their two young sons are left to decipher the mysteries of how to go on living and loving––in the aftermath of violence and loss. A haunting, sometimes raw exploration of grief, Morning Will Come is also by turns humorous and sexy, exploring the bonds of brotherhood and the redemptive power of love. Originally published as How to Hold a Woman by Dzanc Books in 2009, this revised edition is being published in 2020 by Tortoise Books as part of their New Chicago Classics series.

Book Synopsis If They Come in the Morning ... by : Angela Davis
Download or read book If They Come in the Morning ... written by Angela Davis and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With race and the police once more burning issues, this classic work from one of America’s giants of black radicalism has lost none of its prescience or power The trial of Angela Davis is remembered as one of America’s most historic political trials, and no one can tell the story better than Davis herself. Opening with a letter from James Baldwin to Angela, and including contributions from numerous radicals and commentators such as Black Panthers George Jackson, Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale and Erica Huggins, this book is not only an account of Davis’s incarceration and the struggles surrounding it, but also perhaps the most comprehensive and thorough analysis of the prison system of the United States and the figure embodied in Davis’s arrest and imprisonment—the political prisoner. Since the book was written, the carceral system in the US has grown from strength to strength, with more of its black population behind bars than ever before. The scathing analysis of the role of prison and the policing of black populations offered by Davis and her comrades in this astonishing volume remains as relevant today as the day it was published.

Book Synopsis The Scent of Snowflowers by : Rivka Leah Klein
Download or read book The Scent of Snowflowers written by Rivka Leah Klein and published by Feldheim Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoirs of an Orthodox Jew (née Einhorn) from Szombathely. In 1942 she married Yaakov Klein from Ujhely, and they settled in Budapest. Yaakov found work in a textile firm. Soon after the Nazi occupation in March 1944, one day Rivka met Károly Bitter, whose wife Magda worked in Yaakov's firm. The Bitters were Catholics who offered to help the Kleins. Károly himself went into the countryside and brought one of Rivka's sisters and later a brother of hers (who he smuggled out of a ghetto) to Budapest. Rivka gave birth to a daughter in May 1944. The Bitters also had a little daughter. When roundups and deportations of Jews began, the Bitters took the Kleins and ten of their relatives to hide in the their own apartment. Later, the Bitters got another place to live and gave their apartment to the Klein and Einhorn family. Rivka, her husband, and her sister and brother had false papers and could go out to do errands and shopping. The others had to remain silent and indoors all the time. Presents a detailed description of what life was like for hidden Jews, and specifically Orthodox Jews, during the German occupation. When the war ended, the Kleins and Einhorns discovered that almost all the residents of their apartment building were Jews in hiding (all of them had been pretending to be good fascists and Catholics), and that it was built by a wealthy Jewish architect in 1942 specifically for the purpose of hiding his family. All of the residents of this building survived. However, other members of the two families were deported to Auschwitz and murdered. The Kleins later emigrated to New York.

Edward could call on Lucifer and open the gates of Hell and take an unholy war to France...for a price. Mark Adler breathes fresh and imaginative life into the Hundred Years War in this sweeping historical epic.
Book Synopsis Peace Comes in the Morning by : Joel E. Lewis
Download or read book Peace Comes in the Morning written by Joel E. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We came up with an idea: Good versus Evil. Kenny writes the bad side, and Joel writes the good side. The poetry of this book captures and reflects simultaneously both our bad actions, which we followed and which landed us in a bad spot: prison; and our reborn actions, which we now follow after committing our lives to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This has now brought us to a good spot: good works and the ability to do them, placed in us by Jesus. In the end, we came up with Peace Comes in the Morning, but this is not just a title. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 (ESV), "Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." In other words, PEACE stands for "patiently eliminating a care every day." This is what Jesus is saying. Give him your cares. We pray this poetry helps those who read it, and please share with your friends and family. We thank you for reading and for praying for us.
