Tipene O'Regan, Evening Post This award-winning, trail-blazing book by Michael King restored the Moriori of the Chatham Islands to their rightful place in New Zealand, Pacific and world history. This revised edition contains material that has come to light since first publication. 'King has set the record straight in a richly readable and often moving account of a long ignored sideshow to the history of our country.' Gordon McLauchlan, National Business Review 'It is authoritative but it is also popular history in the best sense, and that is precisely what is needed to clear away the brambles of racial prejudice and historical error which have all but overwhelmed the subject in the past.' Atholl Anderson, Otago Daily Times 'This book decisively strips away all the muddle . . . a clear, thoroughly readable and honest history of the Moriori.' Judith Binney, Sunday Star 'A timely book which must be read so that we will all know more about ourselves and about us as a nation.' Hirini Moko Mead, Dominion

Book Synopsis A Global History of Pre-Modern Warfare by : Kaushik Roy
Download or read book A Global History of Pre-Modern Warfare written by Kaushik Roy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the military histories of the regions beyond Western Europe in the pre-modern era. Existing works on global military history mainly focus on the western part of Eurasia after 1500 CE. As regards the ancient period, such works concentrate exclusively on Greece and Rome. So, ‘global’ military history is actually the triumphal story of the West from Classical Greece onwards. This volume focuses not only on the eastern part of Eurasia but also on South America, Africa and Australasia and seeks to explain the history and varied trajectories of warfare in non-Western regions in the pre-modern era. Further, it evaluates whether warfare in non-Western regions should be considered primitive or inferior when compared with Western warfare. The book notes that Western Europe became militarily significant only in the early modern era and argues that the military divergence that occurred during the early modern era is not unique – it had also occurred in the Bronze Age, the Classical era and in the medieval period. This was due to the dynamism and innovativeness of non-Western militaries and the interconnectedness that existed in parts of the Eurasian landmass. Further, those polities which were able to construct a balanced military force by synthesising diverse elements were not only able to survive but also became capable of projecting power across continents. This book will be of much interest to students of military history, strategic studies and world history.

Book Synopsis Bridging the Divide by : Caroline Phillips
Download or read book Bridging the Divide written by Caroline Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collected essays in this volume address contemporary issues regarding the relationship between Indigenous groups and archaeologists, including the challenges of dialogue, colonialism, the difficulties of working within legislative and institutional frameworks, and NAGPRA and similar legislation. The disciplines of archaeology and cultural heritage management are international in scope and many countries continue to experience the impact of colonialism. In response to these common experiences, both archaeology and indigenous political movements involve international networks through which information quickly moves around the globe. This volume reflects these dynamic dialectics between the past and the present and between the international and the local, demonstrating that archaeology is a historical science always linked to contemporary cultural concerns.

Book Synopsis The Aesthetics of Development by : John Clammer
Download or read book The Aesthetics of Development written by John Clammer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a unique range of theoretical and practical case studies, this collection considers the relationship between the arts (understood as the visual arts, crafts, theatre, dance, and literature) and development, creating both a bridge between them that is rarely explored and filling in concrete ways the content of the “culture” part of the equation “culture and development”. It includes manifestations of culture and the ways in which they relate to development, and in turn contribute to such pressing issues as poverty alleviation, concern for the environment, health, empowerment, and identity formation. It shows how the arts are an essential part of the concrete understanding of culture, and as such a significant part of development thinking - including the development of culture, and not only of culture as an instrumental means to promote other development goals.
