Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories recalls an era when the village was the centre of life in the Caribbean island of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Nostalgic, but not sentimental, these stories are based on real events and relate the experiences of a range of characters striving to make a name for themselves; they are people in search of a larger stage. The title story, The Moon is Following Me, paints a picture of school life as it was in the seventies. It features a headmaster who is fond of rum and a teacher who works for half a day only, but it is essentially a story of young love and hope. Take for Two relates the story of Archie, who, on the night he is leaving on a contract to America, is asked by his sweetheart for a ‘special dress’ as a present. When he returns three months later with a wedding dress, he is met with disappointment.Spanish Ladies is based on the murder of a 17-year-old by a preacher. Even now, from this distance, it is painful to recall. The fourth story tells of an unlikely love, brought about by music, and the final story, Taste For Freedom, is an attempt to recreate the early years after the Emancipation. The stories are at times funny and unsettling but rarely sad. These are ‘real’ people, individual, ambitious, mad, vengeful, naïve: they are like villagers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cadillac V-16 was conceived in secrecy in the middle of the Roaring Twenties, when incomes were rising, prosperity seemed endless and the car business was beginning to break from a traditional emphasis on function over form. But by the time the Cadillac V-16 reached showrooms in 1930, the nation was falling headlong into the Great Depression, and it soon became a rare relic of the boom before the crash. That is why in the mid-1960s, when Christopher Cummings was an adolescent car enthusiast, the oldest Cadillac V-16s were a dream just out of reach. This memoir tells the story of a boy who grew up loving cars, learned everything he could about them, and acquired quite a few impressive models for himself, while always looking forward to the day he would, by surprising circumstance, find the automobile of his dreams. Early chapters reveal the adventure Cummings underwent renovating his first car at age 13. Over the course of his teenage years he would work to acquire three classic Cadillacs: a 1941 Cadillac Series 7523 seven-passenger touring sedan, a 1941 Cadillac Series 61 coupe, and a 1931 Cadillac Series 355A Fleetwood Cabriolet. Later chapters recount the painstaking effort he put into renovating and maintaining those coveted vehicles. The story culminates with Cummings' unexpected acquisition of the car that earned the motto "Standard of the World," the 1930 V-16 Imperial Sedan limousine. In all, this memoir bears witness to an elegant sample of the best that the Classic era of automotive history had to offer.

Book excerpt: A breathtaking middle-grade novel about happiness, loss, and an unforgettable dog named Flip “This story convinced me all over again that love and imagination are life’s biggest magic.” —Rebecca Stead, author of Newbery Award winner When You Reach Me Ben Coffin has never been one for making friends. As a former foster kid, he knows people can up and leave without so much as a goodbye. Ben prefers to spend his time with the characters in his favorite sci-fi books…until he rescues an abandoned mutt from the alley next-door to the Coney Island Library. Scruffy little Flip leads Ben to befriend a fellow book-lover named Halley—yes, like the comet—a girl unlike anyone he has ever met. Ben begins thinking of her as “Rainbow Girl” because of her crazy-colored clothes and her laugh, pure magic, the kind that makes you smile away the stormiest day. Rainbow Girl convinces Ben to write a novel with her. But as their story unfolds Ben’s life begins to unravel, and Ben must discover for himself the truth about friendship and the meaning of home. Paul Griffin’s breathtaking middle-grade debut will warm your heart as much as it breaks it. "Full of pace and laughter, bruises and heart. Paul Griffin is the sort of writer you're torn between telling the whole world about and keeping all to yourself."—Markus Zusak, author of Printz Honor Winner The Book Thief “‘Friendship’ is an absolutely beautiful, heart-expanding book. I cried, but more than that I felt this giant balloon of love for everyone. This story convinced me all over again that love and imagination are life’s biggest magic. It’ll make you want to grab hold of everyone important to you and lick them on the nose.” —Rebecca Stead, author of Newbery Award winner When You Reach Me "Some books change the way you see the world. Some change the way you breathe. This book will leave you breathless. This is Paul Griffin's best book yet—and that's really saying something." —Patricia McCormick, author of National Book Award Finalist Sold "When Friendship Followed Me Home is both a beautiful book, and an honest book; it is, in fact, beautiful because it is honest. We see the pain of loss, and the glory of community. We see love in its many forms, and we witness the truth that love goes on despite all barriers. Cheer for Ben and Halley: it is kids like these who are our hope.” —Gary D. Schmidt, author of Okay for Now

Book excerpt: JOURNEY TO WHOLENESS THROUGH THE CREATIVE ARTS Sandy Smyth Theological Studies, Yale Divinity School; Religious Studies, Sacred Heart University; Art Education, Elmira College. At first, I ran by the creek; At last, the creek ran through me. Wholeness, I believe, is the fleeting state of being in which we experience the joy of Heaven on Earth; moments in which we are in complete harmony with God, ourselves and creation entire to experience what I call, "Paradise Within." The consistent religious experience for me is how close I feel to God and wholeness when steeping in Silence, surrounded by natural beauty, particularly in the woods and at the seashore of Connecticut (where I live with my husband, two French bulldogs and a cat). I also believe that when we are the most broken, the creative process--because it connects us to the loving Spirit deep within--can bring us into wholeness through art-making. By art-making, I mean making poems, stories, paintings, sculptures, dances, plays, music and the like. Expressing feelings through art restores harmony within. Art is a medium for communication of feelings, self discovery and healing. On the blank pages of this book, I encourage you to share your own reflections on wholeness or brokenness as you read the poems. The questions that accompany the poems are to stimulate your thinking and creativity and to inspire you to do your own art inside or outside these pages.

What comes first in the morning, the challenge of beauty or something else? Should the Princes of Poppycock be addressed as Her Peachiness? The reader will find intriguing questions and surprising answers in these collected poems, a feast to be savored slowly, flavored with wit and unassuming wisdom and always with grace and humor. A woman of many talents, Margaret Hitchcock Young created and ran a health food store on Nantucket Island, a place she made her home and springboard to the world. In her life (1931-2009) she was a mother, a baker, an actor, a traveler, and a food writer. She was also an avid Scrabble player and crossword solver, loved language and the beauty of words. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “beautiful and wise account” of Martin Luther King Jr. and Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh, who “gave greater life to all of us through their remarkable friendship and shared vision of nonviolence” (Joan Halifax, author of Standing at the Edge). The day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote a heartbroken letter to their mutual friend Raphael Gould. He said: "I did not sleep last night. . . . They killed Martin Luther King. They killed us. I am afraid the root of violence is so deep in the heart and mind and manner of this society. They killed him. They killed my hope. I do not know what to say. . . . He made so great an impression in me. This morning I have the impression that I cannot bear the loss." Only a few years earlier, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote an open letter to Martin Luther King Jr. as part of his effort to raise awareness and bring peace in Vietnam. There was an unexpected outcome of Nhat Hanh's letter to King: The two men met in 1966 and 1967 and became not only allies in the peace movement, but friends. This friendship between two prophetic figures from different religions and cultures, from countries at war with one another, reached a great depth in a short period of time. Dr. King nominated Thich Nhat Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He wrote: "Thich Nhat Hanh is a holy man, for he is humble and devout. He is a scholar of immense intellectual capacity. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity." The two men bonded over a vision of the Beloved Community: a vision described recently by Congressman John Lewis as "a nation and world society at peace with itself." It was a concept each knew of because of their membership within the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international peace organization, and that Martin Luther King Jr. had been popularizing through his work for some time. Thich Nhat Hanh, Andrus shows, took the lineage of the Beloved Community from King and carried it on after his death.
