Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winchester Cathedral: Its Monuments and Memorials It is not the purpose of the present volume to deal specially with the architecture of Winchester Cathedral. That has been done, and well done, by several competent authorities, especially by Professor Willis of Cambridge, whose masterly paper on The Architectural History of the Cathedral was published in the Proceedings of the Archaeological Institute for 1845. Rather is it an attempt, as the title of the book indicates, to call to mind the inarticulate, often the forgotten memories, which lie concealed in the monuments and memorials of the Cathedral. That the Cathedral is remarkably rich in this respect will be admitted. Not only does it preserve, in its unique mortuary chests, the bones of many of the Saxon and Danish kings; not only are its mediaeval monuments of exceptional value and interest; not only are its chantries among the most magnificent in the kingdom; but since the time of the Reformation as many as a thousand individuals have been interred within its walls. Of these the vast majority are naturally unknown beyond the range of local or diocesan history; but in not a few instances a marble leger-stone or mural monument will be found to enshrine a biography of more than passing interest. The task has been no light or easy one, and has involved considerable research at the British Museum and elsewhere. Book excerpt: Founded as the main church of the Knights Templar in England, at their New Temple in London, the Temple Church is historically and architecturally one of the most important medieval buildings in England. Its round nave, modelled on the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, is extraordinarily ambitious, combining lavish Romanesque sculpture with some of the earliest Gothic architectural features in any English building of its period. It holds one of the most famous series of medieval effigies in the country. The luminous thirteenth-century choir, intended for the burial of Henry III, is of exceptional beauty. Major developments in the post-medieval period include the reordering of the church in the 1680s by Sir Christopher Wren, and a substantial restoration programme in the early 1840s. Despite its extraordinary importance, however, it has until now attracted little scholarly or critical attention, a gap which is remedied by this volume. It considers the New Temple as a whole in the middle ages, and all aspects of the church itself from its foundation in the twelfth century to its war-time damage in the twentieth. Richly illustrated with numerous black and white and colour plates, it makes full use of the exceptional range and quality of the antiquarian material available for study, including drawings, photographs, and plaster casts. Contributors: Robin Griffith-Jones, Virginia Jansen, Philip Lankester, Helen Nicholson, David Park, Rosemary Sweet, William Whyte, Christopher Wilson.

Book excerpt: Memorializing the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 is a study of a group of memorials to soldiers who fought in a now nearly forgotten war, and deals with the many factors influencing why there was such an unprecedented number of memorials compared to those to previous conflicts like the Crimean War, fifty years earlier. One of the most important issues was the impact of changes in the organization of the British Army in the late 1800s, particularly the creation of locally-based regiments, heavily manned by volunteers drawn from local communities. The book includes a detailed commentary on the social conditions in England that also account for the unprecedented number of commemorations of this conflict. It discusses the variety of forms memorials took: informal – drinking fountains, ‘Spion Kop” stands at football stadiums; formal – stained glass windows, statues, etc., and the numerous and diverse places where they were located: cathedrals, town squares, public schools and universities. The growth of the national press and the rise of literacy is dealt with in detail, as well as the telegraph, whose invention meant that news became available overnight. Space is given to discuss the expression of Victorian prosperity in public works. The part played by the established church is well documented and an insight is given into the contribution of Imperialism, patriotism and jingoism. All these factors explain the motivation for the memorials’ creation. The book is illustrated with photographs and articles from newspapers of the day. Appendices cover those who are not commemorated, lost memorials, those who unveiled the memorials, colonial involvement and more. Memorializing the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 will appeal particularly to social historians and students of military and social history.
