Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Montreal Medical Journal, Vol. 35: June, 1906 The above table shows that at 70 if saturated a cubic foot will con tain 8 grains of moisture, at 32 a little more than 2 grains, and at 0 about grain. Normal air has a humidity varying from 50 to 70 per cent, saturation being 100 per cent, and if much above or below these limits uncomfortable sensations result. If a saturated mixture of air and vapour at 0 is heated to 70 without adding moisture the hu midity at the higher temperature will be but 6 per cent or eight times dryer than the lower limit stated above. This is the condition during the winter months, and while the air is not quite so dry as six per cent it is not uncommon to find an average indoor humidity of 28 per cent to 30 per cent during the entire period from December lst to March lst. In other words in severe weather so much moisture is pre cipitated by the low temperatures that when heated, the air is prae tically devoid of watery vapour, and there is an abnormal tendency for evaporation of moisture from any available source. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Montreal Medical Journal, Vol. 35: March, 1906 Trousseau, in his Lectures on Clinical Medicine, recalls the famous experiments of Claude Bernard, to show the intimate connexion between the oor of the fourth ventricle, and the development of glycosuria; and that between other cerebral areas, and polyuria, or albuminuria. He also points out how neuralgia excites the secretions of neighbouring glands; how the passions and intellectual engrossments affect secre tion; how mental disturbance will increase micturition; anger modify' -the lacteal secretion; fear produce diarrhoea; and he impresses the fact that the whole digestive system, including the liver and pancreas, may be affected by the mind. Graves, 'too, in his Clinical Lectures on the Practice of Medicine, enforces the importance of what he terms the power of moral impreso sions, in aiding the cure of disease. Sir James Paget, in his Lectures on Surgical Pathology, directs special attention to the effect of mind on nutrition, and says, There is scarcely an organ, the nutrition of which may not be affected by the mind. He cites a very telling case of a patient who consulted him about a tumour in her breast, which she believed to be a cancer. Paget boldly assured her that it was not malignant, and further, that it would speedily disappear. The latter portion of his statement he hardly expected to see fulfilled, but he reports, with apparent surprise, that it began to shrink immediately, without either internal or external thera peutie treatment. While individual workers have demonstrated the controlling powers of the nucleus in one or other respect there has been a curious disinclination to bring the various orders of data together and deduce their full significance. But here, as regards this morning's discussion, certain limitations must be introduced; the activities of living matter are to be divided into two categories, intrinsic and extrinsic, or vegeta tive and functional. The observations which have been made upon the nucleus in connection with vegetative activities, with cell multipli cation and reproduction, are very abundant. To discuss these along with the data bearing upon the role of the nucleus in the functional activities of the cell would make this morning's debate altogether too diffuse. 'it has been thought wiser, therefore, to confine ourselves, save in one respect, in the main to the latter - the functional activities. Nevertheless, if I have correctly interpreted my duties as introducing the subject, in order to place in a, clear light the controlling inﬂuence of the nucleus in the life of the cell, I cannot leave these vegetative activities out of account. As opener, I must as brieﬂy as is possible, consistent with lucidity, bring forward the evidence of nuclear pre dominance as afforded by studies upon cell and individual reproduction.
