Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Review, or Literary Journal, Vol. 60: From January to June, Inclusive, 1779 We cannot help obferving that there are two circumfiances which mull particularly recommend this Grammar; firll, that the rules laid down are illufirated and fupported by example'st quoted from the above-mentioned manufcripts (econdly, that it exhibits both dialefis, to one of which we have been hitherto entire flrangers. The late Mr. Swinton of Oxford intended to have added to this work a difl'ertation, De Numi: copto-pbami dis, part of which is aaually printed off; but the remainder cannot be found among his papers. Mr. Wcide, likewife, ih forms na, that, befide fome curious books, in the dialeél of Upper Egypt, there is a very ancient and valuable tranflatiod of the New Tefiament, of which he intends (con to give an ao count, and to publilh the various readings and we hope it will not be long before he fulfils his promife, made' at the end of the preface to the Grammar, to gratify the curiofity of the learned with his difl'ertation on the Egyptian language and its charaflers. We do not doubt but there will appear feveral things, in this branch of literature, which are altogether new 5 and we join/in opinion with a right reverend prelate, who, in his preface to his applauded Commentary on Ifaiah thinks that the Public will be benefited by it. Refearches of this kinti muff, undoubtedly, throw greater light on the critical Rudy of the New Teflament and on Chriflian antiquities, than the Arabic, which of late, (particularly abroad) has been the hobhy-horfe of many pro fefi'ors, and young matters of arts, who ufe their knowledge of the Arabic, which, heaven knows, is much confined, litc'a juggler's box, to make the ignorant flare, and to mile a funk on the countenances of thofe who have difcernment enough to fee how far they are from being critical conjurors.
