Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly and Annual Rain and Snow Fall of Canada: From 1903 to 1913 In the year 1906 there was published by the Meteorological Service of Canada a collection of precipitation-data, ending with the figures for the year 1902. Since that time the precipitation for the later years has been available to the public only in separate and bulky Annual Reports. To meet the increasing demand for a publication which would contain complete precipitation-data for Canada for the last decade or more in a compact and convenient form, it was decided that those pages of the Annual Reports for the years 1902 to 1913 which presented the rainfall and snowfall records should be reprinted and bound together. Accordingly, one will find in this book the rainfall and snowfall tabulated separately, but each year complete in itself. Because from many letters received by the Meteorological Office in recent years it is evident that many persons do not clearly understand the method of expressing in inches the amount of precipitation, it has been thought well to append the following brief explanation. A depth of inches for the month of July at Toronto, for instance, means that if the total rain fall for the month had, after falling upon the country-side, remained upon the surface, as upon a huge plate without draining away or evaporating, then at the close of the month a foot-rule inserted through the water to the ground would show a depth of two inches; or a pedestrian walking across the fields would be making his way through a lake two inches deep. Or, to explain the matter from a slightly different point of view, a rainfall of inches for the month of July means that upon a ten - acre field there has fallen at the close of the month altogether cubic inches of water, or British imperial gallons, or tons of water of pounds each.
