Book excerpt: THE MONSTER DOG is a happy and funny book with delightful pictures. It is written for young children and early readers. The "Monster Dog" is a small Shih Tzu with a big attitude. Demitasse considers herself a high-classed Shih Tzu and carries her treats to the dining room to eat them there. She even has her own sidewalk as she prances down the curbs. The book is written in "first dog" and deals with love and forgiveness. Carmen is introduced in the book as being like a mother. Carmen and Tasse laugh and fuss all day. Carmen forgets Tasse's treat, but Tasse finds it in her heart to forgive Carmen because, as she says, "Life is not always easy for grownups." Tasse's favorite thing to do is to bark. From her barking platform, she can patrol the whole neighborhood. She barks at the postman, and barks at the track team. She barks until they are scared off. She converses with the crows. Sometimes she barks so long Carmen says, "Time Out" and she has to go to her kennel and think about it. At bedtime, tucked into her little pink bed with her pink snuggle blanket, Tasse sighs as Carmen repeats the refrain, "Oh Tasse, you are a Monster Dog, but I love you."

Much like a young child, she sometimes does not know how to solve these problems. She shares what she learned from her problems In The Monster Dog - Life's Lessons Learned. Tasse learns a really hard lesson when she sneaks out of her yard, gets lost, and meets Sport. She wants to go home, but he says, "Come with me, and let me show you some real fun." She confesses she really didn't want to, but "I wanted him to like me and I wanted him to be my friend." So, they went on down the street together. "Watch this!" he says as he knocks over a garbage can. A lady comes rushing out and Sport runs away leaving Tasse lost and scared and all alone. She determines that "from now on I will listen to my conscience and be more careful who I choose to be my friend."The thirteen stories in the book will delight children. They will help parents and teachers guide children in being welcoming, the consequences of being sneaky, gaining attention the right way, and learning about forgiveness. Beautifully illustrated, artist Katie Hunderosse, has created special pictures that enhance each story. Tasse freely admits that sometimes she just didn't know what to do. Children, parents, and teachers will enjoy what The Monster Dog learned about life's lessons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All seven books in Brian L. Porter's 'Family Of Rescue Dogs' series, now in one volume! Sasha: A Staffordshire Bull Terrier abandoned close to death at the age of 6 weeks old, Sasha was rescued from a street gutter and had the good fortune to be adopted by author Brian L. Porter and his family. Despite suffering from a catalogue of injuries, including two broken legs and skin allergies, and being diagnosed as an epileptic at just two years old, Sasha's story is one of triumph over adversity; of love, happiness and inspiration. Her love of life and capacity for enjoying every day to the fullest is nothing short of miraculous, and her story is told here by the person who shares every moment of her life on a daily basis. Sheba - From Hell to Happiness: Rescue dog Sheba, Sasha’s best friend, was starved, beaten and used as bait for the training of fighting dogs and then thrown on a rubbish tip and left to die, a barely living skeleton. The author and his wife adopted this unfortunate waif and so began a long period of recuperation and training as they gradually helped Sheba back to full health, and to live sociably and happily within their pack of rescue dogs. A story of real triumph over adversity, full of emotion and a fair amount of humour too, Sheba’s is a real-life tale of just what can be achieved in rehabilitating a dog, having suffered a living hell, from the brink of death to a life full of happiness. Cassie's Tale: Cassie was just over two years old when she joined Brian and Juliet’s family of rescues, having already had three previous owners in her short life. The tiny little terrier soon wormed her way into the hearts of the family, and her antics and oversized attitude quickly earned her the nicknames ‘The Mad Ferret’ and ‘The Wicked Witch of the West.’ Cassie can best be described as a ‘pocket dynamo’ or, as the author puts it, “She is filled with boundless energy, and despite being fourteen years old now, she’s like a Duracell bunny without an off switch.” Penny The Railway Pup: Penny, a tiny terrier, was abandoned in a particularly cruel manner. From being attacked and needing emergency surgery, to days out at the coast, chasing seagulls, and stately homes, Penny's life in Brian's pack of rescue dogs has never been anything but interesting and eventful. Remembering Dexter: After being thrown out from a moving car on a motorway and rescued from the dog pound by Brian Porter and his wife, Dexter had a happy life in their family of rescue dogs. On the 8th June, 2019, Dexter - a Labrador-Staffy Crossbreed - passed away after a year-long fight against illness. Part funny, part serious and part tragic, this is the story of Dexter’s life. Dylan - The Flying Bedlington: Whipped, beaten and abused for the first year of his life, Dylan was eventually left tied to the gates of a dog sanctuary, with a note telling of his treatment. The fates were smiling on the little Bedlington terrier, however, as the author and his family adopted him the very same day, and Dylan began his life as part of the author’s Family of Rescue Dogs. From his appearance at a national dog show, to chasing squirrels in the forest, Dylan has led a wonderful, happy life since being rescued. Muffin, Digby And Petal: When Juliet Porter saw an advertisement for Puppies For Sale, little did the author expect that instead of one puppy, they would end up adopting 3 adorable little pups from the same litter. This is the story of those three puppies, who in nine years have remained inseparable, to the extent the family refer to them as ‘one dog with twelve legs,’ literally doing everything together and bringing laughter and joy to everyone with their antics.

Cassie has bounced back from operations, managed to get lost and found in one afternoon, chased away Rottweilers and Dobermans that have had the nerve to try and steal her tennis ball, and found herself being injured by interfering in larger dogs' squabbles. People just can't help falling in love with this tiny bundle of joy. Cassie's Tale is the third book in Brian L. Porter's series of rescue dogs, following on from the award-winning bestsellers, Sasha and Sheba: From Hell to Happiness.

Book excerpt: Just try typing “are small dogs smart…” into its search bar, and Google jumps in prematurely, finishing your sentence for you with suggestions like: “dumb?” “yappy?” “annoying?” Well, no. No, Google, they’re not. We’ve got to say it: Small dogs deserve more respect. If you’ve ever wondered why people love their small dogs like their kids or wished you had a good comeback for the opinionated big dog snob next door when he insults your ten-pound Pekingese, you’ve picked up the right book. In this big defense of small dogs, Downward Sizing Dog proves it’s just not true that big dogs are better dogs or that small dogs are yappy, snappy, annoying, and probably unhousebroken. Weaving real-life stories with new research on the social intelligence and transformative nature of small dogs, Downward Sizing Dog celebrates the powerful canine beings packaged in perfectly-proportioned small-dog frames. With its investigation into every aspect of small dog life, Downward Sizing Dog shows that small dogs deserve not merely more respect; they deserve a place in our families and on our favorite furniture.

Walking down the dog food aisle in a pet supply superstore can present you with an overwhelming number of choices. Reading about dog food on the internet can make your head spin with so many opinions and stories. And judging the content that you find on dog food packaging can be confusing and misleading. How can the average dog owner make an informed choice in accordance with her dog’s age, size and condition? In her latest book, author Linda Case describes how to make logical, evidence-based decisions for what to feed your dog amid all the options available.

You will learn
• How pet food marketers appeal to your emotions to persuade you to buy a particular type of dog food.
• To distinguish between scientific, evidence-based information and the anecdotal evidence which is so pervasive—and often misleading—in the dog food arena.
• Is there a scientific basis for dog foods designed specifically for puppies, senior dogs, canine athletes—even various breeds of dogs?
• How to read and evaluate all of the material included on a typical package of dog food from the ingredients and label claims (“Natural,” “Anti-Oxidant,” “Low Fat”),to the Nutrient Analysis and Nutritional Adequacy statements.
• How to avoid choice paralysis and the cognitive traps that can interfere with clear decision making.

What experts are saying about Dog Food Logic
Pet food is like a religion for many—but now those strong emotional ties can be backed up with fact. Linda Case separates fact from fiction, explains the complex terms and offers a guide to pet nutrition in simple to comprehend language. Unlike other books on this topic, there is no agenda here—except to present facts and then allow pet owners to make their own logical conclusions, letting the kibble drop where it may.
Steve Dale, CABC, columnist Tribune Content Agency; radio host Black Dog Radio Productions and WGN Radio (Chicago); contributing editor USA Weekend; special correspondent Cat Fancy; author Good Cat!

Dog Food Logic is the indispensable guide to the science behind canine nutrition that will help us to make wise, well-informed choices about how and what we feed our dogs. It takes the fear out of trying to understand proper nutrition and will empower us to determine what is best for the health of our dogs.
Claudia Kawczynska, Founder and Editor-in-chief of The Bark

Don’t read this book if you want someone to tell you what to feed your dog. This is a book for people who want to learn, in a reasoned and thoughtful way, how to figure it out for themselves. Dog Food Logic goes way beyond the usual textbook list of nutritional requirements to cover the pet food industry in all its glory: the history, the business, the marketing, and best of all, the science. Case deftly navigates the most controversial topics in pet food and presents the big picture without interjecting judgment about what approach is best. There’s something here for everyone: pet care professionals and dog lovers alike will learn something new from this informative, easy to read, and well researched book.
