European University Studies: Series 5, Economics and Management. Vol. 2931 This book applies both the mechanistic money multiplier model and the credit market theory to analyse the money supply process and monetary policy in china. It examines the effectiveness of the central bank's monetary policy instruments, and assesses the possible monetary policy strategy and operating procedure. The central theme is that the money supply has endogenous features due to the lack of an interest rate mechanism. Therefore, interest rate liberalisation is the key to improving the effectiveness of monetary policy in China. Contents: Money supply - Monetary policy in China - The central banking system - The monetary policy strategy - Operating target."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the recent history of Chinese monetary policy. While most current work focuses on This book traces and explains the evolution of Chinese monetary policy in the years before 2008. The turn towards interest rate deregulation and market-oriented policy in China in recent years is often seen as a break with former command-and-control policy norms, in favour of Western central banking norms. We argue that Chinese monetary policy already went through a transformation under the influence of ‘new consensus’ macroeconomics after 1998, but that this surprisingly led to increased reliance on direct banking controls in the 2000s. Therefore, many of the controls that look to many like a remnant of central planning are in fact an outcome of an earlier attempt to ‘rationalise’ monetary policy, in unusual Chinese conditions. Specifically, policy returned to direct controls because of an underdeveloped interbank money market, and a glut of bank liquidity associated with enormous foreign exchange inflows in the mid-2000s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book is the original proponent of China''s exchange rate system reform announced in 2005. This book discusses: The transitional, medium-term and long-term designs of the reform; China''s achievements and mistakes on the reform; China''s banking reform and its lessons to other emerging economies; Maintaining a certain trade surplus as a dynamically optimal choice for China; China''s stock market bubble and the gradual bubble squeezing strategy; China''s property inflation and its solution; China''s fiscal and monetary policies during and after the global financial tsunami; Risk of global asset inflation, CPI inflation and cycle of exchange rate after the financial tsunami; Likelihood of an asset bubble and then a crisis in economies outside the US during the overheated phase of the recovery. Through these discussions, the author hopes to share his knowledge on macroeconomic policy management accumulated over the past thirty five years. In particular, he would like to share his insights on macroeconomic policy management before, during and after an asset inflation era or a crisis period. He would also like to warn policy makers and financial investors on the likelihood of an asset bubble and then a crisis in economies outside the US. The author hopes this book could eventually stimulate the emergence of OC macroeconomic policy managementOCO as a new and important discipline in economics. While the focus of the book is on macroeconomic policy management, it also offers important lessons and strategies on share and property investments. Thus, economists, policy makers, central bank officials, economics students, business and finance professionals, individual investors and academia in other disciplines will find the book useful."

Book excerpt: A comprehensive, in-depth, and authoritative guide to China's financial system The Chinese economy is one of the most important in the world, and its success is driven in large part by its financial system. Though closely scrutinized, this system is poorly understood and vastly different than those in the West. The Handbook of China’s Financial System will serve as a standard reference guide and invaluable resource to the workings of this critical institution. The handbook looks in depth at the central aspects of the system, including banking, bonds, the stock market, asset management, the pension system, and financial technology. Each chapter is written by leading experts in the field, and the contributors represent a unique mix of scholars and policymakers, many with firsthand knowledge of setting and carrying out Chinese financial policy. The first authoritative volume on China’s financial system, this handbook sheds new light on how it developed, how it works, and the prospects and direction of significant reforms to come. Book excerpt: This new textbook on the Chinese economy clearly presents all that the world's second largest economy has accomplished, as well as what work remains to be done. As economic development in China for the last 30 years has been mostly "top down," this text focuses on the macroeconomic and monetary sides of the economy. Utilising case studies throughout, the book uses not only the traditional macroeconomics tools in explaining the Chinese economy, but also takes a novel approach by assessing China as a company. Through employment of models from finance, such as cash flows and valuations, the text is able to dig deeper into understanding the fundamental characteristics of the Chinese economy. The book also presents extremely useful analysis of the comparisons and contrasts between Chinese economic activity and that of the U.S. economy. eResources including chapter questions with solutions and lecture slides will be available on this webpage.

This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian economies strengthened their monetary and currency management after the Asian financial crisis of 19971998, and came through the global financial crisis of 20072009 relatively well. Nevertheless, the recent global crisis has presented new challenges. This book develops recommendations for monetary and currency policy in Asian economies aimed at promoting macroeconomic and financial stability in an environment of global economic shocks and volatile capital flows. Monetary and Currency Policy Management in Asia draws lessons from crises and makes concrete macroeconomic policy recommendations aimed at minimizing the impacts of an economic and financial downturn, and setting the stage for an early return to sustainable growth. The focus is on short-term measures related to the cycle. The three main areas addressed are: monetary policy measures, both conventional and unconventional, to achieve both macroeconomic and financial stability; exchange rate policy and foreign exchange reserve management, including the potential for regional cooperation to stabilize currency movements; and ways to ease the constraints on policy resulting from the so-called 'impossible trinity' of fixed exchange rates, open capital accounts and independent monetary policy. This is one of the first books since the global financial crisis to specifically and comprehensively address the implications of the crisis for monetary and currency policy in emerging market economies, especially in Asia. Presenting a broad menu of policy options for financial reform and regulation, the book will be of great interest to finance experts and policymakers in the region as well as academics and researchers of financial and Asian economics as well as economic development.
