Book excerpt: This book talks at length about the various milestones achieved in the last two years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's second term at the helm. The book is a comprehensive account of some path breaking reforms like the labour code, banking consolidation, denationalisation of coal and more. Strides in renewable energy, the making of a V-shaped recovery, the PLI scheme, the Gatishakti Masterplan, privatisation of Air India, the National Monetisation Pipeline ( NMP),the unrelenting fight against Covid and ofcourse, the world's largest vaccination drive under the aegis of PM Modi have been exhaustively explained. Besides reforms and the economy, abrogation of Article 370,the Ram Mandir verdict, banning instant triple talaq, UAPA,FCRA,the QUAD summit, victories in Bihar and Assam, massive seat-share rise in West Bengal, National Education Policy, the CAA and ofcourse,PM Modi's massive contribution to climate mitigation and climate justice, have also been discussed threadbare. The book also features commentaries by a very limited set of "influencers" from diverse fields, who share their views on 2 years of Modi 2.0. The Opposition, primarily the Congress Party, ruled India for decades together but even basics like toilets, sanitation facilities, uninterrupted electricity and access to banking facilities, remained a mirage. Besides transforming healthcare via schemes like Ayushman Bharat and bringing banking to the doorstep of of virtually every Indian,Prime Minister Narendra Modi's biggest legacy is the incorruptible nature of his government, where tolerance for corruption is zero.Schemes like Jan Dhan, the direct benefit transfer scheme (DBT) and initiatives like eRUPI,are game changers. Aatmanirbhar Bharat also provides for poverty alleviation through schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana and Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar scheme. Besides, under the stimulus package, an additional Rs 10,000 crore has been set aside for the PM Garib Kalyan Rozgar Yojana in the current financial year. All this is in addition to Rs 73,504 crore that has already been released for rural jobs under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, besides Rs 65,000 crore support for agriculture in the form of fertiliser subsidy and Rs 18,000 crore under PM Awaas Yojana-Urban, that will help 12 lakh houses to be grounded and 18 lakh houses to be completed, generating 78 lakh jobs. Rs 14,775 crore that PM Modi recently released by way of additional fertilizer subsidy on DAP, by raising subsidy per bag from Rs 500 to Rs 1200 per bag, reiterates the farm-centric approach of this government. Turning 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' into a ‘Jan Andolan’,by helping spread the message that ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness', has been a hugely rewarding journey for Modi and ofcourse, for the nation. It would be apt to conclude with a powerful quote by none other than PM Modi, which captures the essence of his famous Varanasi model--"I make changes, not for people to notice;rather, because it is my mission". And truly enough, the transformation of Varanasi,in the last seven years, has been nothing short of extraordinary. Introduction of the book has been written by one of the tallest leaders in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),B.L.Santhosh,who is the National General Secretary (Organisation),of the BJP. Foreword has been written by the erudite Mohandas Pai,while the Afterword has been written by ace journalist,Anand Narasimhan,Managing Editor at CNN News 18. The book has some very interesting takes on Modi 2.0 by Padma Shri, Dr. Sanjeev Bagai and one of India's most reputed wealth managers, Porinju Veliyath, who also shares his insights on PM Modi's path breaking work. Testimonials for Sanju Verma's book from Padma Bhushan, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty and Ashish Chauhan,CEO of Bombay Stock Exchange, are worth a read and endorse the brilliant work done by the author,in capturing every mega achievement of Modi 2.0.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columnist, author and political commentator, Aakar Patel has long been a close observer of the political scenario. In Price of the Modi Years, he seeks to explain the data and facts on India's performance under Narendra Modi. Modi's predecessor, Manmohan Singh, had once said that Modi would be a disaster as prime minister. This book shows how. It concedes Modi's popularity; this is an accounting of the damage he has wrought. It is the history of India since 2014, assessing the damage across the polity from the economy, national security, federalism, foreign relations, legislations and the judiciary to media and civil society. Our memories are not long, news cycles are transient and incidents are forgotten or misclassified as being only episodic, unless documented, unified and placed together as a record. And, therefore, this book-a history of these present times.

Book excerpt: From the author of Where Power Lies and The Spin Doctor's Diary, comes a new book that tells the story of Narendra Modi's meteoric rise to power on the international stage, The Modi Effect: Inside Narendra Modi's Campaign to Transform India. With exclusive access to the architects of Modi's campaign, Prime Minister Modi and his current cabinet, Mr. Price has delivered an insider's account of this incredible political movement. In examining Modi's character and his position as leader of an increasingly powerful nation, Mr. Price explores the global impact of Modi's victory and its on-going transformation of international politics. On May 16, 2014, Narendra Modi was declared the winner of the largest democratic election ever conducted in human history. But how did this impoverished chai wallah, who sold tea on trains as a boy, rise to become Prime Minister of India? Political parties in the West pride themselves on the sophistication of their election strategies, but they all have a lot to learn from this election. Modi's campaign was a master class in modern electioneering. His team created an election machine that broke new ground in the use of social media, the Internet, mobile phones, and digital technologies. Modi took part in thousands of public events, but in such a vast country it was impossible to visit every town and village in person. How did he do it? Via "virtual Modi"-a life-sized 3D hologram-beamed to parts of the vast nation he could not reach in person. These pioneering techniques brought millions of young people-the holy grail of election strategists everywhere-to ballot boxes. Under Narendra Modi's leadership the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a crushing victory in the 2014 general election leaving the Congress Party of the Gandhi political dynasty in disarray. For the first time in the history of India, an opposition leader swept to power with an overall majority. Former BBC correspondent and political consultant Lance Price was granted exclusive access to Prime Minister Modi and his team of advisers to write this book. With complete freedom to tell the story as he found it, Price details Modi's rise to power, the extraordinary election victory, and its aftermath. The book examines Modi's rise, his unprecedented mass appeal despite the controversies surrounding him (including the West shunning him), and the pivotal role he will now play on the international stage. The Modi Effect exposes the changing landscape of electioneering in twenty-first century global politics through the story of Modi's campaign, when message management and technological wizardry combined to create a vote-winning colossus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charismatic personality and determined push for India’s economic development have made him immensely popular at home. Modi’s foreign policy initiatives are driven as much by his government’s domestic political strength as by India’s rising concern over rapid expansion of China’s economic clout and military might in Asia. Three years since then, though, a lot has happened. Indo-Pak relations have seen a roller coaster ride. From inviting Nawaz Sharif to PM Modi's oath taking ceremony to Modi paying an impromptu visit to Pakistan on Nawaz Sharif's birthday, from the Pathankot attack to Uri Attack, from Pakistan backed terrorism in Kashmir valley to the LoC surgical strikes, the list goes on. Meanwhile, China is making headway in wooing India's neighbours. Clearly, "Neighbourhood First" is turning into "Neighbourhood Lost." The “neighborhood first” policy is the striking feature of Modi government’s diplomatic approach. In his government’s strategic imagination, India’s relations with neighboring countries must receive topmost priority. If India does not resolve its differences with its small neighbors, it will only pave the way for China to exert growing influence in the region. India's relations with China have not shown much improvement in the last three years. China's Silk Road diplomacy has successfully wooed India's neighbours, most of whom are participants in China's "One Belt One Road" Project. India decided not to be a part of this project as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor passes through PoK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir), which is claimed by India as its own territory. CPEC is definitely a headache to India's policymakers as this gives both Pakistan and China a strategic advantage over the sensitive region of Kashmir. This book highlights that in the past three decades, due to the constraints of coalition politics, there has been little insight into India’s foreign policy.

Book excerpt: This book examines how the BJP became the world’s largest political party. It goes beyond the usual narrative of the party’s Hindutva politics to explain how, under Narendra Modi, the party reshaped the Indian polity using its own brand of social engineering. According to the findings of this book, this reconstruction was cleverly powered by new caste coalitions, the claim of a new welfare state that focused on marginalised social groups and the making of a women-voter base. Based on data from three unique indices—the Mehta–Singh Social Index, which studies the caste composition of Indian political parties; the Narad Index, which calculates communication patterns across topics and audiences; and PollNiti, which connects and tallies hundreds of political and economic datasets—The New BJP is full of startling insights into the way both the party and the country function. Previously untapped historical records, exclusive interviews with party leaders and comprehensive reportage from across India provide a fresh understanding of the BJP’s growth areas, including the Northeast and south India. A lucid and objective study of the BJP and India today, this book will be useful to researchers, journalists, students, activists and general public alike. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shadow Negotiators is the first book to demonstrate that United Nations (UN) organizations have intervened to influence the discourse, agenda, and outcomes of international trade lawmaking at the World Trade Organization (WTO). While UN organizations lack a seat at the bargaining table at the WTO, Matias E. Margulis argues that these organizations have acted as "shadow negotiators" engaged in political actions intended to alter the trajectory and results of multilateral trade negotiations. He draws on analysis of one of the most contested issues in global trade politics, agricultural trade liberalization, to demonstrate interventions by four different UN organizations—the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food (SRRTF). By identifying several novel intervention strategies used by UN actors to shape the rules of global trade, this book shows that UN organizations chose to intervene in trade lawmaking not out of competition with the WTO or ideological resistance to trade liberalization, but out of concerns that specific trade rules could have negative consequences for world food security—an outcome these organizations viewed as undermining their social purpose to reduce world hunger and protect the human right to food.
