Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Obey-Porter bill was passed in 1997 to supply funds to low-performing schools to implement scientifically research-based reform models. The Modern Red SchoolHouse design was one of the highly adopted designs by schools and districts across the nation to help improve schools and is the focus of this study. Now that extensive funding such as the Obey-Porter bill has ended, there is limited research on the sustainability of these adopted designs. This study analyzes the implementation, capacity-building, and sustainability of this widely implemented comprehensive school design, the Modern Red SchoolHouse (MRSH) design. This study puts emphasis on the importance of studying sustainability from the perceptions of the teachers while examining principal, implementation process, and school characteristics that impact sustainability. The Modern Red School House Teacher Survey (MTS) was used to evaluate the teachers' perceptions of the sense of presence of the six-core capacity-building components of the design. The 173 teachers in this study were from 11 former MRSH sites established between 1998-2005 from the South Region: 3. The 11 principals who participated in the study completed the Principal's Questionnaire and provided additional information about their schools. The study concluded that these schools were perceived by teachers as having a presence of capacity-building components. Major findings include the following: (a) principal leadership is vital to successful whole school implementation and sustainability, (b) the critical challenge of principals in comprehensive school reform is creating a network of strong relationships within and across faculty and staff through communication and professional development, (c) parents, teachers and other stakes holders must be involved in the decision-making process, (d) whole school reform must be balanced with and modified to accountability efforts if it is to be sustained. This research adds to the knowledge base of sustainability of comprehensive school reform by exploring the perceptions and actions of elementary teachers who have worked with the Modern Red SchoolHouse design. Implications for practice include allowing teachers and parents to take part in decision-making related to reform initiatives and developing learning communities that sustain both teacher and principal motivation toward adopted reform initiatives.

Book excerpt: “If you read only one book on educating children, this should be the book.… With a warm, informative voice, Bauer gives you the knowledge that will help you flex the educational model to meet the needs of your child.” —San Francisco Book Review Our K–12 school system isn’t a good fit for all—or even most—students. It prioritizes a single way of understanding the world over all others, pushes children into a rigid set of grades with little regard for individual maturity, and slaps “disability” labels on differences in learning style. Caught in this system, far too many young learners end up discouraged. This informed, compassionate, and practical guidebook will show you how to take control of your child’s K–12 experience and negotiate the school system in a way that nurtures your child’s mind, emotions, and spirit. Understand why we have twelve grades, and why we match them to ages. Evaluate your child’s maturity, and determine how to use that knowledge to your advantage. Find out what subject areas we study in school, why they exist—and how to tinker with them. Discover what learning disabilities and intellectual giftedness are, how they can overlap, how to recognize them, and how those labels can help (or hinder) you. Work effectively with your child’s teachers, tutors, and coaches. Learn to teach important subjects yourself. Challenge accepted ideas about homework and standardized testing. Help your child develop a vision for the future. Reclaim your families’ priorities (including time for eating together, playing, imagining, traveling, and, yes, sleeping!). Plan for college—or apprenticeships. Consider out-of-the-box alternatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two powerful forces are driving American's demands for better schools -- one longstanding force is idealistic and the other is "new" and economic. The current group of young Americans is in danger of being the first full generation to consistently make less money and enjoy fewer worldly rewards than their parents. The intersection of idealistic and pragmatic forces has produced an era of calls for reform in U.S. education that is unparalleled -- calls that have resulted in the creation of the New American Schools Development Corporation (NASDC). The chapters in this book highlight the path traveled by NASDC -- a private, non-profit corporation charged with creating new, "break the mold" school designs for the 21st century -- and describes the first three years' accomplishments of nine NASDC development teams.

Book excerpt: School days, like our everydays, have changed. But the obsolete world of the one-room schoolhouse filled with rough-hewn desks still lingers. The echoes of yesteryear live on in the old-fashioned classrooms that still stand today. Harkening back to a time when the three Rs actually stood for reading, 'riting, and religion, Eric Sloane's sketchbook explores the history and spirit of early American schools. In this vivid slice of Americana, he tells of when paper was a precious commodity, explains the origins of words such as "blackboard" and "moonlighting," and offers evocative illustrations of New England's eighteenth- and nineteenth-century schoolhouses and their delightfully modest interiors. Filled with insight, warmth, and honest nostalgia, "The Little Red Schoolhouse" is an enchanting journey into a bygone past.
