Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in Modern Life IN this little volume I have endeavored to give a brief but intelligible and connected sketch of the more important of the numerous useful functions fulfilled by Electricity in modern daily life, the scientific principles underlying these practical applications, and the history of their development. It is addressed primarily to readers who have no previous knowledge of the subject, but who wish to know something of what Electricity has been made to do for us, and of how it has been made to do it. I trust, however, that it may also be of some use to students who are just beginning the study of practical Electricity, by giving them a general view of the field of knowledge which they will afterward have to study in detail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Home: A Standard Ready Reference Book In this book, which is the outgrowth of a meeting with an Old friend who sought my aid in modernizing his home, I am attempting to provide you with an effortless means Of learning the simple facts everyone should know about the modern applications of electricity in the home. Its prime Object is to Show the home owner how to derive the greatest benefits from electric service through proper selection, installation and maintenance of equipment, and how to employ this service in the most practical and economical way. Ever since the inception Of the first domestic electrical appliance many years ago, it has been my chief hobby to go adventuring in leisure hours ever further afield into the practical benefits of home electrification. The result is that my friends regard my modest country place as something of a marvel in modern comfort and convenience. Impelled by motives of economy, as well as by a desire to know the whys and wherefors of this supposedly difficult subject, I have directed the little work involved myself, with suggestions from my boys. It has required a small amount of time, some inexpensive materials and equipment and a little imagination, but no unusual ability. What I have learned to do, every man, woman and child of high school education can accomplish ust as easily. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in the Service of Man, Vol. 1: A Popular and Practical Treatise on the Applications of Electricity to Modern Life; The History and Principles of Electrical Science Early History Of Magnetism - Nothing certain is known about the exact period when the compass was brought to Europe. We find in a piece of poetry called La Bible, composed by Guyot de Provins, dated 1190, some lines to the effect that sailors consulted the magnetic needle when bad weather set in. Jacques de Vitry, in his Historia Naturalis (1215 mentions the magnetic needle as being at that time no longer a novelty. The first European who took into account the declinations of the needle was probably Christopher Columbus. Its deflection from the due north had been previously attributed to the incorrect construction of the instrument. Variations in the deflection of the needle at the same place were first noticed by Henry Gellibrand in the year 1634. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity Experimentally and Practically Applied: A Book for the Beginner and for the Practical Man, Principles, Experiments, Practical Applications and Problems Although a number of excellent works on practical electrical engineering are already in use, the author believes there is a place for a volume that will present the subject from an experimental standpoint. For many years the author has taught the subject of electrical engineering by means of experimental lectures and laboratory work to large numbers of practical men. Since these students have often lacked mathematical training, it has been nec essary to explain the subject-matter in a very simple way, showing, wherever possible, its practical features. The same method of presentation has been used in this text, and it is hoped that a much larger audience may thus be reached and benefited. This volume is particularly adapted to courses of instruction given to those engaged in actual electrical work; it should likewise prove useful as a text for high schools and for college laboratory courses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Electricity AN attempt has been made in this book to represent the subject of electricity in a logical manner, and to keep in View its present-day aspect as well as its history. Magnetism is no longer treated as a separate subject, as modern theory holds that magnetism is an attribute of electricity in motion, that is, of the electric current. As an introduction to the subject one of the most familiar applications of electricity is Chosen - the electric incandescent lamp, and from this the rest is developed. Those branches of magnetism which stand apart from the main thread of the treatment of electricity, namely, terrestrial magnetism and the magnetic properties of materials, are relegated to the two last chapters. One of the most difficult conceptions for the student, that of potential, is introduced in the treatment of electricity at rest, that is, electrostatics, as it is here a simple quantity. Its relation to the rate of working in the case of a current then follows easily. While fitted for classes of students studying electricity with an examination in view, the book is also intended to give them a wide outlook upon the subject in its present state of development. For this reason chapters on electric waves and wireless telegraphy and telephony, electrons and X-rays and radioactivity are added; in fact there is a tendency in modern examinations to introduce these subjects to a small extent in order to make electricity a living rather than a historical subject. Only well-established facts have been included, but these prepare the way for the intensely interesting subject of the modern theories of the constitution of matter which the student may follow later. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Electricity Seven years in the making, is the record for Practical Elec tricity. Some Of the material was written during the years from 1910 to 1913 for the American Electrician's Handbook, but it developed that the text thus prepared was not suitable for a handbook. Hence, it was stored away temporarily and has been incorporated in the present volume. Since June, 1916, a very considerable portion Of the author's time and effort has been devoted to this work. Practical Electricity was written for certain definite purposes. Primarily, its Object is to present the fundamental facts and theo ries relating to electricity and its present-day applications in a straight-forward, easily-understood way for study by any man, Of little mathematical training, who desires to acquire a working knowledge of the subject. If a man understands arithmetic he should be able to get the meat out of this book. Secondarily, the book was designed for university graduates who desire a medium whereby they can, with minimum efiort, review, refresh and re construct in line with modern theory and practice their concepts Of electric and magnetic phenomena. While it has not been found necessary to use the higher mathematics, the statements and ex planations are technically accurate.
