Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection of sixteen essays considers evidence for the varied forms of women's alliances in early modern England. It shows how women, prohibited from direct participation in the institutional structures that shaped the lives of men, constructed informal connections with other females for purposes of survival, advancement, and creativity. The essays presented here consider a variety of communities--formed among groups as diverse as serving women, vagrants, aristocrats, and authors--in order to study the historical traces of women's connections. "Alliance"--as understood by the essayists in this volume--does not preclude competition or antagonism, since the bonds among women were frequently determined by an opposition to other women. As shown here, the theorizing of women's connections, and the recovery of the historical evidence for these connections, can only add to our understanding of women's activities in early modern English society. Maids and Mistresses, Cousins and Queens is divided into four sections. The first two, "Alliances in the City" and "Alliances in the Household," examine the circumstances of women's communities in two primary sites for women of this place and time. The second two, "Materializing Communities" and "Emerging Alliances," fully study the aspirations that guided and transformed the courses of women's lives. All of these interdisciplinary essays, deftly combining literary and historical methods and materials, are informed by feminism, queer theory, and studies of class and race in the early modern period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domei is a popular narrative art form among the Mende people of Sierra Leone. Although it is a traditional form, the narratives are not remembered or retold, but on each occasion the performers recreate out of a common stock of characters and plots domeisia, which are singular and sometimes brilliant expressions of a singular, and often brilliant, culture. In this book Donald Cosentino presents a large selection of these narratives, as he collected them in dramatic performance on the verandahs and around the cooking fires of a Mende village. The domei is told to please, and Dr Cosentino details the various elements that constitute the pleasure of an oral performance. But beneath the surface glitter of these ironic, horrifying, bawdy and haunting narrative performances, there is an intellectual hardness of argument and debate which shines through the domeisia included here. Dominating these performances, and emblematic of the entire artistic tradition, are the 'everywoman' figure of the Defiant Maid, Yombo, and the 'everyman' Stubborn Farmer, Kpana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned literary coterie in eighteenth-century Philadelphia—Elizabeth Fergusson, Hannah Griffitts, Deborah Logan, Annis Stockton, and Susanna Wright—wrote and exchanged thousands of poems and maintained elaborate handwritten commonplace books of memorabilia. Through their creativity and celebrated hospitality, they initiated a salon culture in their great country houses in the Delaware Valley. In this stunningly original and heavily illustrated book, Susan M. Stabile shows that these female writers sought to memorialize their lives and aesthetic experience—a purpose that stands in marked contrast to the civic concerns of male authors in the republican era. Drawing equally on material culture and literary history, Stabile discusses how the group used their writings to explore and at times replicate the arrangement of their material possessions, including desks, writing paraphernalia, mirrors, miniatures, beds, and coffins. As she reconstructs the poetics of memory that informed the women's lives and structured their manuscripts, Stabile focuses on vernacular architecture, penmanship, souvenir collecting, and mourning. Empirically rich and nuanced in its readings of different kinds of artifacts, this engaging work tells of the erasure of the women's lives from the national memory as the feminine aesthetic of scribal publication was overshadowed by the proliferating print culture of late eighteenth-century America.

Book excerpt: Learning any second language is difficult, but Japanese has to be one of the more difficult ones to master. On top of the 3 writing systems, one of which has almost 2,000 characters, you still have all the regular components of a language such as verbs, adjectives, nouns, and grammar. There are several books available now that teach you how to learn the vast Japanese writing systems. There are equally as many books that teach grammar and verb conjugation. But there are few, if any, books that teach fast ways to learn the actual verbs and adjectives. Learning Japanese Verbs and Adjectives Using Memory Mnemonics uses a creative approach to learning words fast, and more importantly, remembering them longer. Memory mnemonics, or triggers, are used to remind your brain where it just recorded some piece of information. Most people can learn most anything fast, but they have trouble with recollection. This book uses triggers that sound like the verb and the meaning. For example, the verb for to disturb or corrupt is midas . How can you remember this and differentiate it from the hundreds of other verbs. Using a memory trigger can make it easier to learn faster and remember longer. One trigger could be to think of King Midas. He was so corrupt with greed he turned everything to gold. So you can remember midas as corrupt King Midas. Learning Japanese Verbs and Adjectives Using Memory Mnemonics contains triggers for 350 verbs and 126 adjectives. Then as a bonus there are trigger suggestions for an additional 102 verbs, that's over 450 verbs. Using this book you can quickly learn Japanese verbs and adjectives and nearly double your communication skill in a very short time.

What questions are crucial during history taking? What should the physical examination and investigations focus on? What should the consultation write-up include? Now, physician learners can turn to Vancouver Notes for Internal Medicine for guidance on conducting consultations in each of the core internal medicine subspecialties. Vancouver Notes provides learners with an organized approach to common presentations in internal medicine. For each subspecialty, it lays out the process for identifying key information and communicating findings and management recommendations to a patient’s health-care team. Developed through the efforts of more than 90 resident physicians and faculty members at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver Notes combines valuable clinical pearls in a single, accessible resource to give students and residents the tools they need to succeed from day one.
