Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mission of St. Augustine to England According to the Original Documents: Being a Handbook for the Thirteenth Centenary This book is compiled by desire of his Grace the late Archbishop of Canterbury. With that love of history and that devotion to detail which marked his character, he sketched out what kind of book he wished to be prepared 'before that Commemoration.' It 'must issue from the University Press.' It was to consist of 'a complete collection of authentic documents bearing on Augustine's coming, translations with the Latin close beside, and footnotes. These documents were to be accompanied by 'investigations on the spot, geographic and hydrographic, Ebbsfleet, Richborough, etc., and by 'essays short and few, shewing the real bearing of the events on later controversy.' He thought that this would form 'a most precious little book.' 'It would place, ' he wrote, 'the real argument between Rome and us on a clear footing at a time when it would be read by all English-speaking races. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase "separation of church and state", is one of the most well known and least understood phrases in modern American lexicon. A majority of Americans are certain it is contained in the Constitution but the dirty little secret is the term is not mentioned anywhere in that revered document. The phrase entered the American political environment when President Thomas Jefferson responded to a letter he received from constituents. Why could a portion of a single letter trump the United States Constitution? Why would a metaphor be taken literally and used for settled law?Jefferson was not even in the United States while the amendment was debated and adopted. Jefferson and Madison comprise less than 6%% of the total number of founders cited, but their words are used by Supreme Court Justices more than 79%% of the time. Heck, eight percent of Americans think Elvis is alive. Founders such as, George Washington, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, Alexander Hamilton and Patrick Henry are virtually ignored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating a wide range of problems in the development of English law, this collection of original essays honors the contributions of Samuel D. Thorne to the study of English legal history from the eleventh to the seventeenth century. The essays combine close study of legal texts and doctrines in their own setting with broader analysis of the interaction of legal and social change. Although each essay has its own historiographical context, a substantial unity is achieved. Originally published in 1981. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians are much the richer for this accomplishment of a long-cherished dream by an experienced missioner-social anthropologist. Gerald Arbuckle has provided a book for the contemporary pastoral care team that mediates basic insights on ministry via the social sciences. He also challenges church workers to rethink and reassess their work in light of the profound cultural changes taking place around them. 'Earthing the Gospel' introduces pastoral workers in the First World to methods of social analysis pioneered by missionaries worldwide. It includes case histories, personal stories, and the results of fieldwork of hundreds of people in both the First and Third Worlds. Applying the insights of social anthropology to the parishes on the home frontÓ Arbuckle offers the tools required to address issues of mission and inculturation in the First World. Above all, 'Earthing the Gospel' is practical. It presumes no special knowledge of anthropology as it zeroes in on topical issues - racism, fundamentalism, the modern family, youth and senior citizen subcultures - affecting parishes and communities today. Each chapter ends with questions for reflection and action. For pastoral teams and workers on every level, the insights gained from mission around the world can, applying the methods described here, be just as fruitful in our own back yards.
