Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I grew up in a family system where there were a lot of abusive family members. The ones who were not abusive didn't seem to be able to remove themselves or the children from the harmful behavior in our lives. As a child I was extremely nervous and felt a lot of shame. I witnessed a lot of horrible things and was extremely abused myself. I saw how alcoholism enabled certain family members to either act very inappropriately when under the influence or become extremely violent. I saw how alcohol was used to medicate other family members. Some of my family members died rather young I feel due a very stressful life. I began to notice my siblings and my cousins participate in destructive relationships and/or abuse substances. My relationships with them were not healthy ones. I tried for years to find ways to improve my relationships with them but nothing ever worked no matter how hard I tried. This book is about my experiences with family and other unhealthy relationships in my life. How it all affected me from childhood and into adulthood. The steps I had to take to improve my life. I now believe I can have the love and respect I want from others in my life as long as I love and care for myself. I hope my story will help others who have had similar experiences. I have no desire to drink alcohol anymore or to associate with people who abuse it, are abusive, controlling and who cannot be accountable for their behavior. We all deserve to heal and have good relationships in our lives.

Book excerpt: The Modern Stephen King Canon: Beyond Horror is a collection of essays focused on the more recent writings of Stephen King, including Revival, 11/22/63, and a selection of short stories by the “Master of the Macabre.” The authors write about King works that have received little critical attention and aim to open up doorways of analysis and insight that will help readers gain a stronger appreciation for the depth and detail within King’s fiction. Indeed, while King is often relegated to the role of a genre writer (horror), the essays in this collection consider the merits of King’s writing beyond the basics of horror for which he is primarily known. Recommended for scholars of literature, horror, and popular culture.
Book Synopsis The Sleep of Reason by : Martha C. Nussbaum
Download or read book The Sleep of Reason written by Martha C. Nussbaum and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex is beyond reason, and yet we constantly reason about it. So, too, did the peoples of ancient Greece and Rome. But until recently there has been little discussion of their views on erotic experience and sexual ethics. The Sleep of Reason brings together an international group of philosophers, philologists, literary critics, and historians to consider two questions normally kept separate: how is erotic experience understood in classical texts of various kinds, and what ethical judgments and philosophical arguments are made about sex? From same-sex desire to conjugal love, and from Plato and Aristotle to the Roman Stoic Musonius Rufus, the contributors demonstrate the complexity and diversity of classical sexuality. They also show that the ethics of eros, in both Greece and Rome, shared a number of commonalities: a focus not only on self-mastery, but also on reciprocity; a concern among men not just for penetration and display of their power, but also for being gentle and kind, and for being loved for themselves; and that women and even younger men felt not only gratitude and acceptance, but also joy and sexual desire.
