Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to consciousness during the act of dying? The most compelling answers come from people who almost die and later recall events that occurred while lifesaving resuscitation, emergency care, or surgery was performed. These events are now called near-death experiences (NDEs). As medical and surgical skills improve, innovative procedures can bring back patients who have traveled farther on the path to death than at any other time in history. Physicians and healthcare professionals must learn how to appropriately treat patients who report an NDE. It is estimated that more than 10 million people in the United States have experienced an NDE. Hagan and the contributors to this volume engage in evidence-based research on near-death experiences and include physicians who themselves have undergone a near-death experience. This book establishes a new paradigm for NDEs.

Book excerpt: The Near Death Experience: A Reader is the most comprehensive collection of NDE cases and interpretations ever assembled. This book encompasses a broad range of disciplines: psychological researchers discuss cognitive models and Jungian theories of meaningful archetypal phenomena; the biological perspectivedescribes how brains near death may produce soothing endorphins, optical illusions, and convincing hallucinations. Philosophers present empirical analyses and images in archetypal theories, and the symbolic language of comparative phenomenological theories. Christian, Jewish and Mormon responses to NDEs outline the religious perspective, and the mystical and spiritual interpretations of NDEs are also explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepare to immerse yourself in accounts of real near-death experiences and discover the wisdom they have to offer you. Near-death experiences (NDEs) are common, well-documented, and similar across cultures throughout the world. Current estimates are that between four and fifteen percent of the world’s population have had an NDE. Some of the fascination with NDEs comes from the fact that they often result in great leaps in personal growth. These leaps are characterized by the loss of the fear of death, the healing of deep hurts, an increase in self-esteem and compassion for others, a sense of union with all things, and a clearer sense of how to fulfill one’s purpose in life. This is a book that teaches readers how to reap the benefits of NDEs without having to experience trauma. In the course of their many workshops around the world, the authors have discovered that when one immerses oneself in accounts of NDEs, one can experience love, hope, healing, and a sense of purpose. This is the only book that systematically encourages the reader to create a spiritual and psychological healing practice based on NDEs. Each chapter includes an account of a fascinating NDE, followed by a series of questions, meditations, exercises, and video links. The reader is encouraged to contemplate these stories and their own lives. It is truly a profound guide to both living and dying. Praise for The Gifts of Near-Death Experiences “A fresh and exciting perspective to understanding near-death experiences. Everyone can benefit from learning the wisdom so clearly and eloquently expressed in this book. With each turn of the page you will find a treasure trove of insights, inspiration, and practical pointers that will really work in your life. This outstanding book is expertly written, remarkably easy to read, and enthusiastically recommended.” —Jeffrey Long, M.D., author of the New York Times–bestselling Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences “The Linns have written a book that is both inspirational and practical. They provide wise and gentle wisdom that lead readers into a place of growth and healing.” —Richard Rohr O.F.M, author of Falling Upward

It reminds us that despite all the perils and sufferings that surround us, with which we often collide, we can find healing, peace, and awe even in the most unusual detours that life offers. A must read.” — Marina Nemat, Author of international best-seller Prisoner of Tehran "In Carolyn Whitney-Brown's deft hands, Henri’s intentions literally, vividly swing alive. This is a beautiful, moving story about interconnectivity, interdependence, and life's rich, beautiful, complicated pageant. I devoured it in a sitting.” — Lisa Napoli, Author of Susan, Linda, Nina & Cokie Henri Nouwen’s real-life story of his surprising friendship with a traveling trapeze troupe. What will we do with our lives, and with whom will we do it? In this story of flying and catching, Nouwen invites us all to let go and fly, even when we are afraid of falling. During the last five years of his life, best-selling spiritual author Henri J. M. Nouwen became close to The Flying Rodleighs, a trapeze troupe in a traveling circus. Like Nouwen’s own life, a trapeze act is full of artistry, exhilarating successes, crushing failures and continual forgiveness. He wrote about his experience in a genre new to him: creative non-fiction. In Flying, Falling, Catching, Nouwen's colleague and friend Carolyn Whitney-Brown presents his unpublished trapeze writings framed by the true story of his rescue through a hotel window by paramedics during his first heart attack. Readers will meet Nouwen as a spiritual risk taker who was transformed through his engagement with these trapeze artists, as well as his participation in the Civil Rights movement, his life in community with people with intellectual disabilities, his personal growth through friendships during the 1990s AIDS pandemic, and other unexpected encounters.

Book excerpt: The expression "Near-Death Experience" is associated in the popular understanding with access to knowledge about our transition between the states of life and death. But how should such experiences be interpreted? Are they verifiable with scientific methods? If so, how can they be explained? Attempting to relate matters of scientific knowledge to subjective experience and the realm of belief is a difficult balancing act and has led to a variety of approaches to the topic. This work scrutinizes the diverse views and also myths, about near-death experiences and describes them from a scientific standpoint. Situated at the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, philosophy and religious studies this book will appeal to a broad audience of both scientists and general readers.

Book excerpt: A Near-Death Experience (NDE) is the recollected experience of someone who has been declared ‘clinically dead’ by the doctors, followed by resuscitation (the act of bringing someone back to life). Common traits that have been reported by NDErs (persons having near-dear experiences) are: An awareness of being dead; A sense of peace, well-being, painlessness and other positive emotions; a sense of removal from the world; an intense feeling of unconditional love and acceptance; experiencing euphoric environments, an out-of-body experience (OBE), that means, a perception of one's body from an outside position, sometimes observing medical professionals performing resuscitation efforts; a "tunnel experience" or entering a zone of darkness; a rapid movement toward a bright light; being reunited with deceased loved ones; receiving a ‘life review’, commonly referred to as "seeing one's life in a flash-back before one's eyes"; approaching a border or a decision by oneself or others to return to one's body, often accompanied by a reluctance to return; and suddenly finding oneself back inside one's body. Although majority of the NDErs report pleasant experiences, a few of them may have distressing or unpleasant experiences also. This book consists of 13 chapters, categorized into three sections: (i) Introduction and Overview, (ii) Some True Stories, and (iii) Scientific Interpretation.

Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author presents startling new evidence of God’s existence based on the largest near-death experience study in history. In Evidence of the Afterlife, Dr. Jeffrey Long laid out a strong scientific case for life after death. Now he goes further, revealing evidence that a Supreme Being exists—and there is amazing consistency in the accounts of what he is like. Through his Near Death Experience Research Foundation, Dr. Long collected more than 4,000 reports from people of diverse backgrounds and religious traditions, including nonbelievers, who had credible near-death experiences. Some saw a bright light, others went through a tunnel, still others experienced a review of their life. But many of the accounts shared a remarkably similar description of God; a Supreme Being who radiated love and grace. Expanding on his analysis begun in Evidence of the Afterlife, God and the Afterlife is the first intensive account of the people who have gone to the frontier of heaven, met God, and returned to share their journey. Groundbreaking and profound, it provides new insight into the human experience and expands our notions of mortality, offering possibility, hope, and comfort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A team of international experts presents the history, recent developments, and controversies in the intriguing study of near-death experience. Experts from around the world share the history and current state of near-death experience (NDE) knowledge. They explore controversies in the field, offer stories from their research, and express their hopes for the future of investigation into this fascinating phenomenon. As modern medical techniques for resuscitation advance, NDEs are more frequently reported. These include more than the popular notions of moving through a tunnel or seeing a light. They also include people, once revived, knowing things their knowledge of which can't currently be explained. As The Handbook of Near-Death Experiences: Thirty Years of Investigation makes clear, great controversy exists in the medical and psychological fields concerning NDEs. Are they caused by physiological changes in the brain, or are they biological reactions to oxygen loss or impending death? Are they a product of changing states of consciousness? Or are they caused by something else altogether? All of these ideas and more are discussed in this unique and comprehensive volume.
