Book Synopsis Variations on Truth by : Pol Vandevelde
Download or read book Variations on Truth written by Pol Vandevelde and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together leading scholars from across the world, this is a comprehensive survey of the latest phenomenological research into the perennial philosophical problem of 'truth'. Starting with an historical introduction chronicling the variations on truth at play in the Phenomenological tradition, the book explores how Husserl's methodology equips us with the tools to thoroughly explore notions of truth, reality and knowledge. From these foundations, the book goes on to explore and extend the range of approaches that contemporary phenomenological research opens up in the face of the most profound ontological and epistemological questions raised by the tradition. In the final section, the authors go further still and explore how phenomenology relates to other variations on truth offered up by hermeneutic, deconstructive and narrative approaches. Across the 12 essays collected in this volume, Variations on Truth explores and maps a comprehensive and rigorous alternative to mainstream analytic discussions of truth, reality and understanding.

Book Synopsis The Transformation of Cinema, 1907-1915 by : Eileen Bowser
Download or read book The Transformation of Cinema, 1907-1915 written by Eileen Bowser and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-05-04 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Transformation of Cinema chronicles the history of the American film business from the days of storefront nickelodeons to the premiere of D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation, complete with full symphony orchestra. Eileen Bowser here redresses the imbalance of the "Griffith did it all" cliché by discussing the efforts of countless lesser-known figures who also helped to create Hollywood and shape the growing film industry. The effect of the surroundings -- the size of the hall; whether the film was shown alone or along with vaudeville entertainment; and the size, quality, and relevance of the musical background -- are all examined for their impact on the filmgoing experience. Bowser documents the emergence of the star system, which set the stage for the classic silent-film era. By 1915 the silent film is seen as a full-fledged art form with its own style and place in the world of business."--Back cover.
Book Synopsis Charles Ives and the Classical Tradition by : Geoffrey Block
Download or read book Charles Ives and the Classical Tradition written by Geoffrey Block and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Charles Ives has long been viewed as the quintessential American composer, he placed himself in the European classical tradition, drew on it heavily for his aesthetic philosophy and musical techniques, and extended it to create something new. This book illuminates Ives's music by comparing it with that of other composers in Europe and the United States. Edited by two highly regarded Ives scholars, the book begins with essays that examine the influences on Ives of his musical predecessors and concludes with essays that find extensive parallels between Ives and such European contemporaries as Mahler, Schoenberg, Berg, and Stravinsky, whose music he knew little or not at all, but with whom he shared influences and concerns. Taken together, these chapters demonstrate that even apparently strange or distinctively American aspects of Ives's music--from his penchant for quotation to his juxtaposition of disparate styles--have strong precedents and parallels among European composers. Ives emerges as a composer at home in the classical tradition, engaged in exploring the same issues that confronted composers of his generation on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book Synopsis The King of the Movies by : Joseph P. Eckhardt
Download or read book The King of the Movies written by Joseph P. Eckhardt and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That immigrant Jews had a profound impact on the growth of American cinema is well known and has been the subject of much scholarship. But America's first Jewish movie mogul, Siegmund Lubin of Philadelphia, has never been closely studied. Drawing upon contemporary accounts and interviews with Lubin's surviving family, friends, and employees, this work details the life and career of the once-famous "Pop" Lubin. It also seeks to explore the complex personality of this early film pioneer and the impact he had on the initial development of the movies. Torn between his loyalty to Edison and his desire to help the young Jewish independents trying to break into the business, Lubin adopted a complex strategy for working both sides of the fence. Sam Goldwyn, Jesse Lasky, Mark Dintenfass, Charles Baumann, and Adam Kessel all benefited from his discreet assistance. Lubin also became the first American film pioneer to utilize the motion picture to combat anti-Semitism.
