Book Synopsis The Serpent Coiled in Naples by : Marius Kociejowski
Download or read book The Serpent Coiled in Naples written by Marius Kociejowski and published by Haus Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A travelogue revealing the hidden stories of Naples. In recent years Naples has become, for better or worse, the new destination in Italy. While many of its more unusual features are on display for all to see, the stories behind them remain largely hidden. In Marius Kociejowski’s portrait of this baffling city, the serpent can be many things: Vesuvius, the mafia-like Camorra, the outlying Phlegrean Fields (which, geologically speaking, constitute the second most dangerous area on the planet). It is all these things that have, at one time or another, put paid to the higher aspirations of Neapolitans themselves. Naples is simultaneously the city of light, sometimes blindingly so, and the city of darkness, although often the stuff of cliché. The boundary that separates death from life is porous in the extreme: the dead inhabit the world of the living and vice versa. The Serpent Coiled in Naples is a travelogue, a meditation on mortality, and much else besides.

What do miracles have to do with me? How does the Church determine if a miracle is valid? What do miracle cures have to do with canonization? Do saints perform miracles? What are apparitions and why do they appear? What's a "Eucharistic miracle"? Can statues, icons, or effigies really be miraculous? What about incorruptibles and stigmata? Thoroughly researched and documented, Exploring the Miraculous will enlighten and fascinate, but most of all will guide us to Christ, who is the center of our lives and the true object of our faith.
Download or read book Souls of Naples written by Autori Vari and published by Viella Libreria Editrice. This book was released on 2024-03-21T14:32:00+01:00 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume you will find stories about hyperactive relics, ghosts in spiritual or bodily form, as well as accounts of the dead being conjured, resurrected, and brought back to life from decomposing matter. This is not so much for the purpose of assembling a kind of Neapolitan Wunderkammer, but rather to allow these bodies – in physical or spiritual form, or sometimes both at the same time – to speak as protagonists, and to offer their own contribution to the historical anthropology of the Kingdom of Naples. This volume explores the boundaries between body and spirit, life and death, as well as the natural, preternatural, and supernatural in the long early modern era in southern Italy.

Book Synopsis The matter of miracles by : Helen Hills
Download or read book The matter of miracles written by Helen Hills and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates baroque architecture through the lens of San Gennaro’s miraculously liquefying blood in Naples. This vantage point allows a bracing and thoroughly original rethink of the power of baroque relics and reliquaries. It shows how a focus on miracles produces original interpretations of architecture, sanctity and place which will engage architectural historians everywhere. The matter of the baroque miracle extends into a rigorous engagement with natural history, telluric philosophy, new materialism, theory and philosophy. The study will transform our understanding of baroque art and architecture, sanctity and Naples. Bristling with new archival materials and historical insights, this study lifts the baroque from its previous marginalisation to engage fiercely with materiality and potentiality and thus unleash baroque art and architecture as productive and transformational.

Book Synopsis The Natural History of a Neapolitan Miracle by : Francesco de Ceglia
Download or read book The Natural History of a Neapolitan Miracle written by Francesco de Ceglia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Naples’s patron saint, Gennaro, the history of his blood relic, and the mystery of its periodical liquefaction. Three times a year, Neapolitans gather to witness the recurring phenomenon of the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood. From the seventeenth century to the present, crowds have prayed to the city’s patron for protection from fires, earthquakes, plagues, droughts, and the fury of Mt. Vesuvius. In the “miraculous” moment of transposition from solid to liquid, the faithful seek respite from the ills of the world in the saintly blood, a visual reminder of the blood of Christ spilled for their salvation. In Naples, the periodical liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood is not officially recognized as miraculous by the Catholic Church, which now more cautiously refers to it as a prodigy. Nevertheless, for centuries, this phenomenon has been called “a miracle” in liturgical texts approved by the ecclesiastical authority and in the words of bishops, cardinals, popes, and saints. However, not everyone agreed. This volume follows the efforts of theologians, alchemists, charlatans, and scientists who, through the centuries, have tried to answer questions such as: Is the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood really a miracle? If not, how is it possible to explain a phenomenon that occurs only on dates liturgically relevant to the saint? The Natural History of a Neapolitan Miracle will be of great value to those interested in Religious Studies, Italian Studies, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, as well as the History of Science, Anthropology, and Ethnography.

This is history as it was lived by the men of the 504th, from their pre-war coming of age in the regiment, through the end of World War II, when they marched in the Victory Parade down Fifth Avenue in New York.
