Book Synopsis The Haskins Society Journal 22 by : William North
Download or read book The Haskins Society Journal 22 written by William North and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most up-to-date research in the period from the Anglo-Saxons to Angevins. This volume of the Haskins Society Journal continues its tradition of publishing the best historical and interdisciplinary research on the early and central middle ages in the Anglo-Saxon, Anglo-Norman, and Angevin worlds. The topics of the essays range from legal influences on Alfred's Mosaic Prologue, judicial processes in tenth-century Iberia, and the ecclesiology of the Norman Anonymous to the nature and implications of comital authority in the eleventh- and twelfth-century Anglo-Norman realm and conceptions of servitude in legal thinking in thirteenth-century Catalonia. The volume also embraces art history, with contributions on the medieval object as subject; the banquet scene in the Bayeux Tapestry; and there is a synoptic archeological exploration of early medieval Britain. Finally, an edition and translation of the De Abbatibus of Mont Saint-Michel makes available in complete and reliable form an important witness to this Norman monastery's medieval past. Contributors: Thomas Bisson, Charlotte Cartwright, Martin Carver, Kerrith Davies, Wendy Davies, Paul Freedman, James Ginther, Stefan Jurasinski, Elizabeth Carson Pastan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called ‘Canon Tables’ of the Christian Gospels are an absolutely remarkable feature of the early, late antique, and medieval Christian manuscript cultures of East and West, the invention of which is commonly attributed to Eusebius and dated to first decades of the fourth century AD. Intended to host a technical device for structuring, organizing, and navigating the Four Gospels united in a single codex – and, in doing so, building upon and bringing to completion previous endeavours – the Canon Tables were apparently from the beginning a highly complex combination of text, numbers and images, that became an integral and fixed part of all the manuscripts containing the Four Gospels as Sacred Scripture of the Christians and can be seen as exemplary for the formation, development and spreading of a specific Christian manuscript culture across East and West AD 300 and 800. In the footsteps of Carl Nordenfalk’s masterly publication of 1938 and few following contributions, this book offers an updated overview on the topic of ‘Canon Tables’ in a comparative perspective and with a precise look at their context of origin, their visual appearance, their meaning, function and their usage in different times, domains, and cultures.

Book Synopsis Perceptions of Medieval Manuscripts by : Elaine Treharne
Download or read book Perceptions of Medieval Manuscripts written by Elaine Treharne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perceptions of Medieval Manuscripts takes as its starting point an understanding that a medieval book is a whole object at every point of its long history. As such, medieval books can be studied most profitably in a holistic manner as objects-in-the-world. This means readers might profitably account for all aspects of the manuscript in their observations, from the main texts that dominate the codex to the marginal notes, glosses, names, and interventions made through time. This holistic approach allows us to tell the story of the book's life from the moment of its production to its use, collection, breaking-up, and digitization--all aspects of what can be termed 'dynamic architextuality'. The ten chapters include detailed readings of texts that explain the processes of manuscript manufacture and writing, taking in invisible components of the book that show the joy and delight clearly felt by producers and consumers. Chapters investigate the filling of manuscripts' blank spaces, presenting some texts never examined before, and assessing how books were conceived and understood to function. Manuscripts' heft and solidness can be seen, too, in the depictions of miniature books in medieval illustrations. Early manuscripts thus become archives and witnesses to individual and collective memories, best read as 'relics of existence', as Maurice Merleau-Ponty describes things. As such, it is urgent that practices fragmenting the manuscript through book-breaking or digital display are understood in the context of the book's wholeness. Readers of this study will find chapters on multiple aspects of medieval bookness in the distant past, the present, and in the assurance of the future continuity of this most fascinating of cultural artefacts.
