Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter and dean of Trumpologists David Cay Johnston reveals years of eye-popping financial misdeeds by Donald Trump and his family. While the world watched Donald Trump’s presidency in horror or delight, few noticed that his lifelong grifting quietly continued. Less than forty minutes after taking the oath of office, Trump began turning the White House into a money machine for himself, his family, and his courtiers. More than $1.7 billion flowed into Donald Trump’s bank accounts during his four years as president. Foreign governments rented out whole floors of his hotel five blocks from the White House while lobbyists conducted business in the hotel’s restaurants. Payday lenders and other trade groups moved their annual conventions to Trump golf resorts. And individual favor seekers joined his private Mar-a-Lago club with its $200,000 admission fee in hopes of getting a few minutes with the President. Despite earning more than $1 million every day he was in office, Trump left the White House as he arrived—hard up for cash. More than $400 million in debt comes due by 2024, and Trump still lacks the resources to pay it back. “Few people are as well positioned to write an exposé of the former president as Johnston” (The Washington Post), and The Big Cheat offers a guided tour of how money flowed in and out of Trump’s hundreds of enterprises, showing in simple terms how a corrupt president used our government for his benefit, even putting national security at risk. Johnston details the four most recent years of the corruption that has defined the Trump family since 1885 and reveals the costs of Trump’s extravagant lifestyle for American taxpayers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book provide in- depth insight into the gender norms and contexts in which women work in the expanding informal mining sector in sub- Saharan Africa. Collectively, the research here provides a nuanced account of women’s livelihood strategies in artisanal and small- scale mining (ASM, as its generally known) in ways that challenge images of women— as either victimized by mining or empowered by mining livelihoods, or both— that tend to dominate the growing array of donor and policy interventions in this sector. The authors come from different disciplinary traditions— anthropology, economics, political science, mining engineering, law— but all place questions of gendered power front and centre in their analyses of sociocultural, institutional, economic and political relationships, practices and arrangements within which women navigate their mining livelihoods. The physical or representational presence (and sometimes absence) of women in ASM sites is a linking theme, with the chapters exploring different dimensions of mining and gender— the gendered divisions of labour, migration, land ownership, cultural norms, and gendered authority relations— but also how ‘women’ materialize and are seen and unseen in the growing array of transnational interventions in this sector. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Canadian Journal of African Studies.

The Main World, the Nether, and the End That's right: Minecraft has not one, not two, but three different worlds for you to explore. The main world is the one you start out in, and where you'll be spending most of your time. As the game progresses, however, you'll find ways into the Nether, which is a dark, mysterious place full of unique resources for you to use to improve your tools, equipment, and other creations and is accessed through Nether portals. Using Nether portals also allows you to travel greater distances in the main world much faster, as it is a smaller plane.

Book excerpt: A computer hacker is an expert in this case, in computer science, who uses his technical knowledge to achieve a goal or overcome an obstacle, within a computer system by non-standard means. Writing a book or two a day is not a very standard means and when it becomes three or two or three hundred titles you start to take it seriously, especially when you see the results, and the results are obvious when you see the curve growing ever upwards. It's only the beginning, but a few months can define a lifetime, as these last two years have been for humanity as a whole. We have all learned that we are very different at the same time as we are similar in the essential that we all want to be alive. Death or crisis brings out the best or the worst in us and the reality is that human beings are complex beings. I do not consider myself an expert in any branch of computing, I have not received any special training in anything to do with computers or computer security. My computer does not even have antivirus and is open to access by what for many is a big problem because they believe in their right to privacy, and do not think many times about the right of everyone, of the whole world, to a greater and total security. This book is not to encourage or motivate anyone to do anything illegal by misunderstanding the definition of hacking. In chess, checkmate is the move that consists of threatening the king so that he cannot defend himself and puts an end to the game.I do not know how to play table chess, because my mind is that of quantum chess. I didn't know it before, because I didn't know neither my true potential nor that of the world inside my old computer, that world which is a wonder. Thank you for reading these lines. Book excerpt: Bridging art and innovation, this book invites readers into the processes of artists, curators, cultural producers and historians who are working within new contexts that run parallel to or against the phenomenon of ‘maker culture’. The book is a fascinating and compelling resource for those interested in critical and interdisciplinary modes of practice that combine arts, technology and making. It presents international case studies that interrogate perceived distinctions between sites of artistic and economic production by brokering new ways of working between them. It also discusses the synergies and dissonances between art and maker culture, analyses the social and collaborative impact of maker spaces and reflects upon the ethos of the hackathon within the fabric of a media lab’s working practices. Art Hack Practice: Critical Intersections of Art, Innovation and the Maker Movement is essential reading for courses in art, design, new media, computer science, media studies and mass communications as well as those working to bring new forms of programming to museums, cultural venues, commercial venture and interdisciplinary academic research centres.
