Book excerpt: ItÍs not every book of poetry that includes an ñOde to Body Armor.î But then, itÍs not every poet whose experience in academia includes a stint at the police academy. The poems of Sarah Cortez are tough-minded, verbally supple, and often deeply (even explicitly) erotic: You want me to come/ to you each night, drop my gun belt,/ lie along your muscled length . . . And each of these fifty lyric poems (with titles such as ñRosie Working Plain Clothes,î ñLas TÕas,î and ñAttempt to Locateî) displays CortezÍs many facets: the street smarts of a law-enforcement officer (deputy constable in HoustonÍs Harris County); the bilingual vocabulary of a proud Mexican American; the coolly analytic eye of a corporate accountant (as she once was); the linguistic dexterity of a Latin teacher (another former occupation); and the frank sensuality of a strong and spirited woman. Surveying fellow officers, friends, criminals, lovers, strangers, and family members, Sarah Cortez has learned that a bullet-proof vest may, with luck, protect the body, but keeping the heart from harm is a chancier and more mysterious affair. Long after the pages of How to Undress a Cop have been turned, her unique and distinctive voice will stir the blood and haunt the memory.

Book excerpt: As he rose through the ranks of various departments of the Metropolitan Police, Christian Plowman dreamt of being an undercover cop. When he finally achieved his ambition, becoming one an elite group of officers, the reality of covert work turned his life into a nightmare. To catch criminals, Christian bought and sold drugs with taxpayers’ money, been beaten up, arrested at gunpoint and barricaded in a pub by a gang of marauding gypsies – all in a day’s work. At one stage, he was running almost a dozen mobile phones to keep track of his different identities and had so many aliases that he nearly forgot who he was. He put his life on the line for the job but was to find that being the ‘best of the best’ wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. The pressure became so intense that he even contemplated suicide. Crossing the Line is a visceral, gripping account of what it really takes to be an undercover cop. It exposes how the Met conducts its business behind the scenes and reveals the harsh realities of modern covert police work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking history of how American police forces have been militarized is now revised and updated. Newly added material brings the story through 2020, including analysis of the Ferguson protests, the Obama and Trump administrations, and the George Floyd protests. The last days of colonialism taught America’s revolutionaries that soldiers in the streets bring conflict and tyranny. As a result, our country has generally worked to keep the military out of law enforcement. But over the last two centuries, America’s cops have increasingly come to resemble ground troops. The consequences have been dire: the home is no longer a place of sanctuary, the Fourth Amendment has been gutted, and police today have been conditioned to see the citizens they serve as enemies. In Rise of the Warrior Cop, Balko shows how politicians’ ill-considered policies and relentless declarations of war against vague enemies like crime, drugs, and terror have blurred the distinction between cop and soldier. His fascinating, frightening narrative that spans from America’s earliest days through today shows how a creeping battlefield mentality has isolated and alienated American police officers and put them on a collision course with the values of a free society.

Law professor James J. Duane became a viral sensation thanks to a 2008 lecture outlining the reasons why you should never agree to answer questions from the police--especially if you are innocent and wish to stay out of trouble with the law. In this timely, relevant, and pragmatic new book, he expands on that presentation, offering a vigorous defense of every citizen's constitutionally protected right to avoid self-incrimination. Getting a lawyer is not only the best policy, Professor Duane argues, it's also the advice law-enforcement professionals give their own kids. Using actual case histories of innocent men and women exonerated after decades in prison because of information they voluntarily gave to police, Professor Duane demonstrates the critical importance of a constitutional right not well or widely understood by the average American. Reflecting the most recent attitudes of the Supreme Court, Professor Duane argues that it is now even easier for police to use your own words against you. This lively and informative guide explains what everyone needs to know to protect themselves and those they love.

Drive by shooting? Nice quiet night. Now, with The Job he’s ready to talk, and does he have some stories to tell. Most civilians get their information about police work from television shows, which are pure fantasy. Here, Osborne takes us into his world, the gritty and not so glamorous life of real street cops. And along the way he finds humor and soul searching humanity in the most unlikely places. For anyone interested in knowing what a cop’s life is all about, this is a must read.

This compelling and often startling book answers this, and many other questions about the oft-times violent world inhabited by our nation's police officers. Written by a cop-turned university professor who interviewed scores of officers who have shot people in the course of their duties, Into the Kill Zone presents firsthand accounts of the role that deadly force plays in American police work. This brilliantly written book tells how novice officers are trained to think about and use the power they have over life and death, explains how cops live with the awesome responsibility that comes from the barrels of their guns, reports how officers often hold their fire when they clearly could have shot, presents hair-raising accounts of what it's like to be involved in shoot-outs, and details how shooting someone affects officers who pull the trigger. From academy training to post-shooting reactions, this book tells the compelling story of the role that extreme violence plays in the lives of America's cops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violent crime has been rising sharply in many American cities after two decades of decline. Homicides jumped nearly 17 percent in 2015 in the largest 50 cities, the biggest one-year increase since 1993. The reason is what Heather Mac Donald first identified nationally as the “Ferguson effect”: Since the 2014 police shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, officers have been backing off of proactive policing, and criminals are becoming emboldened. This book expands on Mac Donald’s groundbreaking and controversial reporting on the Ferguson effect and the criminal-justice system. It deconstructs the central narrative of the Black Lives Matter movement: that racist cops are the greatest threat to young black males. On the contrary, it is criminals and gangbangers who are responsible for the high black homicide death rate. The War on Cops exposes the truth about officer use of force and explodes the conceit of “mass incarceration.” A rigorous analysis of data shows that crime, not race, drives police actions and prison rates. The growth of proactive policing in the 1990s, along with lengthened sentences for violent crime, saved thousands of minority lives. In fact, Mac Donald argues, no government agency is more dedicated to the proposition that “black lives matter” than today’s data-driven, accountable police department. Mac Donald gives voice to the many residents of high-crime neighborhoods who want proactive policing. She warns that race-based attacks on the criminal-justice system, from the White House on down, are eroding the authority of law and putting lives at risk. This book is a call for a more honest and informed debate about policing, crime, and race.

Book excerpt: This book is written by Lt. David Vanderport (ret.) His book presents a perspective on one of America's most divisive issues, the relationship between police and the citizens among whom they work. It tells a story of the grinding mental forces of violence, human despair, and two-second life-and-death decisions that lead to more cop suicides every year than death in the line of duty. This is a fiction book comprised of several short stories. The stories are told by Luke, a veteran police officer who has worked in investigations, corrections, and on patrol. The majority of his career has been spent in a city with a population of approximately 300,000 people. Throughout the years the job has taken it's toll on Luke. He has had many ups and downs in his career as well as in his personal life. Some of his issues are of his own doing but they are certainly exacerbated by the mental grind of law-enforcement. This book is filled with action packed stories which can be read and stand on their own; however, the stories are also part of a bigger picture message, mental health in law-enforcement.

Book excerpt: THE COP THAT CARED: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is a collection of criminal cases, personal events and memories in short story form from Earl Taggart's career as an Indiana State Police officer and Sheriff. Earl Taggart was born and raised in New Castle, Indiana; after graduating from Chrysler High School Earl joined the Army in December of 1965 and was assigned to the army artillery. He was discharged in December of 1968 after obtaining the rank of sergeant E-5. Upon returning to Indiana, Earl worked a short time at Delco-Remy in Anderson and it was during this time that Earl applied to The Indiana State Police. Earl was accepted to the State Police Academy in February 1970 and was assigned to the Seymour District upon his graduation in April of 1970. After completing his probationary period he started his State Police career in Jennings County. During Earl's career with the State Police he worked as a road trooper, a narcotics detective, and finally a district detective. Earl successfully completed numerous specialized training courses during his tenure as well as teaching investigation classes in drug enforcement, criminal investigations, and hostage negotiations. Earl was a team leader for the State Hostage Negotiation Team and the State Police Crises Intervention Team. Earl retired from the Indiana State Police in December of 1998. In November of 1998 Earl was elected as Sherriff of Jennings County and served in office for 8 years. These short stories are a collaboration of different events that occurred during his law enforcement career; some humorous, some terrifying, and some unbelievably sad. -The youngest was 3 years old. She was just too young to give any details. I got to thinking about the tattoo on him. I went to the prosecutor for a search warrant to examine his body. It was several weeks before I could locate him. He came in with his attorney. -I noticed that the glass from the door was on top of the blood. So if someone broke in, the glass should be on the floor, and the blood on top of the glass. The scene was staged; she was already dead when the door was broken open. -I forgot to tell Bill of the curve, we hit it and slid! Bill grabbed the dash with both hands and held on for life (when I traded that car there were eight fingers pressed into the dash). Each story has you rolling through your emotions like you were there in living person, you wont want to put it down!

Book excerpt: New Investigative Book Exposes Former President's Foundation is at the Center of the Anti-Police Firestorm The wave of riots and anti-police actions that began in the Spring of 2020, and continue to this day, have been generally reported by the mainstream media as an entirely spontaneous grass roots response to the death in police custody of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The mainstream media got it wrong. National Police Association writer and retired Seattle police officer Steve Pomper's new book, The Obama Gang, provides for the first time an explanation that what happened was far from spontaneous. This investigation into what is really behind the new vilification of law enforcement exposes the groundwork for the anti-police firestorm was carefully created, organized and led by former president Barack Obama's Foundation, and executed by the Foundation's web of allies. The anti-police machine which has been constructed to operate across the country 24/7. The seemingly independent anti-police factions are in actuality part of a larger "family" or "gang" of wealthy and radical individuals and organizations. With former President Barack H. Obama's Foundation at the top, they operate similar to an organized crime family--on the periphery of civil society. From the bottom up, the organizational chart begins with the "soldiers" on the streets, who caused such visible destruction during 2020, and climbs the crowded pyramid to the top. This "family", or gang of individuals and organizations are now working together like never before to collapse policing in America as we know it--to collapse America as we know it.
