Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic tale of wartime. The book tells the story of two young people from Gdansk, parted by the outbreak of war. It is a record of their journey, which saw them on opposite sides of the conflict. Yet, there are many characters in the novel, whose stories are introduced to the reader through the adventures of the book's main characters. It is also, if not primarily, a testimony to the past, told in the language of those who survived the war. Many of the events quoted in the book really happened, and these are the actual accounts of the author's parents (who lived through the war) and other family members, these are also testimonials of soldiers of the past interviewed by the author and all this has been braided into a story woven in the writer's imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the cold dawn of Christmas Day 1897, Gilbert Rice, 85 years old and with failing health, recounts his journey into manhood in a city on the cusp of great change. Belfast in the 1830s was a city in flux. Industrialisation had led to an increase in commerce and the rapid swell of the population as workers flocked to the newly created jobs. Gilbert, a young man with prospects, begins work with the Ballast Office, looking after Belfast Port. Beneath the shadow of the Harland & Wolff shipyard Gilbert explores this ever expanding and exciting city whilst becoming aware of the political undertones and the sectarian tensions that still brew beneath its respectable veneer. In a city that still resonates with the legacy of the 1798 Rebellion Gilbert begins to question the injustices that he sees. When he meets Maria, a Polish barmaid, he is drawn into a love affair that will drive him to make a stand against those he sees as harming the city that he loves.

Book excerpt: An in-depth examination of the oldest engineering process, The History of Grinding begins at the start of agriculture and outlines how size reduction developed over the centuries(without completely immersing the reader in technical detail). Great technical achievements have led to the machines of today, which can grind solid particles at the rate of tens of thousands of tons per day. One certainty is the existence of the continuing need for size reduction to develop and fit the lifestyles of people both today and in the future. Photos and illustrations gleaned from numerous sources, a glossary, reference list, and index enhance the text. Chapters include Size Reduction from the Stone Age to the Space Age; The Science and the Scientists; Hand Stones; Water Wheels, Windmills, and Beyond; Stamp Mills and Crushers; Roller Mills; Tumbling Mills; Fine-Grinding Mills; Classifiers; Explosive Rock Breakage; and Size Reduction in the 21st Century.

Book excerpt: Students entering the food processing stream need to acquire knowledge of concepts and analytical skills together with the knowledge of their applications. Food Engineering: Principles and Practices explains the different unit operations in food processing with an emphasis on the principles of food engineering as well as the different types of equipment used for the purpose. An approach in which propounding concepts and theory is immediately followed by numerical examples makes this book unique among food engineering textbooks. The examples, which are thoroughly explicated, have been taken, in general, from different competitive examinations and have been selected with practical applications for a better appreciation and understanding by the students. In the case of equipment, the constructional and operational features are discussed along with the specialty features of these types of equipment for better understanding their applications. Key Features: Merges a presentation of food engineering fundamentals with a discussion of unit operations and food processing equipment; Reviews concepts comprehensively with suitable illustrations and problems; Provides an adequate number of examples with different levels of difficulty to give ample practice to students; Explains equipment units in three broad subheadings: construction and operation, salient features, and applications This book is written as a textbook for students of food processing and food technology. Therefore, the book is meant for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing food processing and food technology courses. Download or read book Mineral Processing written by M.R. Pryor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 851 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: textbook. Basic description is attempted, and the bibliography has been specifically chosen to guide the reader toward a fuller treatment of his special ised interests. No fully satisfactory term has yet emerged to describe the processing of minerals, which is also called "ore dressing", "mineral dressing", "mineral engineering" and, in the University of London degree course "mineral technology". The dressing of ores was an excellent description of the older processes which aimed to break down rock to appropriate sizes, grade it, and separate the heavy fraction from the light one in each grade or size by gravity methods. The work done in the mill today goes far beyond these simple operations, and requires some knowledge of physical chemistry, particularly the branches which deal with the physics and chemistry of surfaces and of the interphase between solid particle and the surrounding liquid. At the same time, the engineer must not become so absorbed in the study of fundamental and applied technology as a physico-chemical science that he overlooks the mechanical, economic, and humanistic aspects oli his work. He is an engineer, a chemist, a physicist, and an administrator and, as such, should have a sound scientifj. c and cultural education. Technically, his work is to extract the valuable minerals from the ore sent to his mill; economically, it is to balance all the financial costs and returns in such a way as to ensure the maximum profit from the operation.
