Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mill on the Floss When George Eliot had finished a novel, she did not care to look at it again - e.g., she said of Romola, "I have not read it for ten years"; and when she is "deep in the fourth volume" of Deronda she "cannot any longer care for the first volume that is past and done for." But she always read new proofs scrupulously and was eager to make minor emendations, as shown by her thanking Mrs. Blackwood for her "hints on equine matters," by her hope that Mr. Blackwood will "rate the printers a little about their spacing," and by her saying of a new edition of Middlemarch, "I am anxious to correct the sheer both in relation to mistakes already standing, and to prevent the accumulation of others." Hence I have thought it worth while to follow the Cabinet Edition of 1878, which in many minor matters is an improvement upon the first form. The only alterations in spelling (except normalizing Sinbad and Sindbad, and changing the final vowel of particulum) are Americanizing forms like waggon and the terminations our, eable, ise, and lled. The punctuation has been altered in only two ways: inserting periods after Mr and Mrs, deleting about two dozen commas and semicolons before dashes. On what principles should this edition be annotated? Since there are in the reflective passages hundreds of words and allusions of which the ordinary high-school pupil is ignorant, and since explaining them all would convert a novel into a reference-book, notes have been limited by this test: Will a note add to a reader's pleasure by giving him a better understanding of the story? Only an omniscient sympathy could know certainly whether it is wise to define "pier-glass" and "comforter," to explain "sang froid" and omit "stoat"; but a real effort has been made in every case to decide whether "this will bring out the picture." Few biographical references have been given, and few definitions of words that can be found in a desk dictionary. The facts of George Eliot's life are mostly taken from J. W. Cross's three-volume biography - indeed there is hardly any other source. Mathilde Blind's Life has furnished some added items of interest, and Oscar Browning's a few. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mill on the Floss, Vol. 3 of 3 N o, no, said Lucy, sticking them in her band, you shall not have my scissors again - you have strained them already. Now don't set Minny growl ing again. Sit up and behave properly, and then I will tell you some news. What is that said Stephen, throwing himself back and hanging his right arm over the corner of his chair. He might have been sitting for his por trait, which would have represented a rather strik ing young man of five-and-twenty, with a square forehead, short dark-brown hair standing erect, with a slight wave at the end, like a thick crop of corn, and a half-ardent, half-sarcastic glance from under his well-marked horizontal eyebrows. Is it very important news? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mill on the Floss, Vol. 2 of 3 Eminently inconvenient to raise the said sum until that desirable issue had taken place, had rashly ao ceded to the demand that he should give a bill of sale on his household furniture, and some other effects, as security in lieu of the bond. It was all one, he had said to himself: he should soon pay off the money, and there was no harm in giving that security any more than another. But now the con sequences of this bill of sale occurred to him in a new light, and he remembered that the time was close at hand, when it would be enforced unless the money were repaid. Two months ago he would have declared stoutly that he would never be be holden to his wife's friends; but now he told himself as stoutly that it was nothing but right and natural that Bessy should go to the Pullets and explain the thing to them: they would hardly let Bessy's fur niture be sold, and it might be security to Pullet if he advanced the money - there would, after all, be no gift or favour in the matter. Mr Tulliver would never have asked for anything from so poor-spirited a fellow for himself, but Bessy might do so if She liked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mill on the Floss, Vol. 2 The family sitting-room was a long room with a window at each end; one looking towards the croft and along the Ripple to the banks of the Floss, the other into the mill-yard. Maggie was sitting with her work against the latter window when she saw Mr. Wakem entering the yard, as usual, on his fine black horse; but not alone, as usual. Some one was with him, - a figure in a cloak, on a handsome pony. Maggie had hardly time to feel that it was Philip come back, before they were in front of the window, and he was raising his hat to her; while his father, catching the movement by a side-glance, looked sharply round at them both. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic novel, first published in 1860, tells the story of Maggie Tulliver. Intelligent and headstrong but trapped by the conventions of family tradition and rural life, Maggie is one of the great heroines of Victorian literature. Along with Maggie’s story, the novel also tells a companion tale of the social pressures that restrict the vision of her beloved brother Tom. George Eliot’s most autobiographical novel, The Mill on the Floss remains one of her most popular and influential works. This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction and extensive contextualizing notes as well as a broad range of appendices drawn from contemporary documents dealing with issues such as 19th-century views of disability, education, and the Woman Question.

Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
