Such is the case for the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies of the Milky Way (MW), where tension exists in explaining their observed abundance, mass, and internal structure. Here we present an analysis of the substructure surrounding MW-sized haloes in a Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) simulation suite. Combined with a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation and evolution, we identify substructures that are expected to host dSph galaxies similar to the satellites of the MW. We subsequently use these simulations to investigate the orbital properties of dSph satellite galaxies to make contact with those orbiting the MW. After accretion into the main halo, the higher mass ``luminous'' substructure remains on highly radial orbits while the orbits of lower mass substructure, which are not expected to host stars, tend to scatter off of the luminous substructure, and thus circularize over time. The orbital ellipticity distribution of the luminous substructure shows little dependence on the mass or formation history of the main halo, making this distribution a robust prediction of LCDM. Through comparison with the ellipticity distribution computed from the positions and velocities of the nine MW dSph galaxies that currently have proper motion estimates as a function of the assumed MW mass, we present a novel means of estimating the virial mass of the Milky Way. The best match is obtained assuming a mass of 1.1 x 10^12 M_sun with 95 per cent confidence limits of (0.6 - 3.1) x 10^12 M_sun. The uncertainty in this estimate is dominated by the large uncertainties in the proper motions and small number of MW satellites used, and will improve significantly with better proper motion measurements from Gaia. We also measure the shape of the gravitational potential of subhaloes likely to host dSphs, down to radii comparable to the half-light radii of MW dSphs. Field haloes are triaxial in general, while satellite haloes become more spherical over time due to tidal interactions with the host. Thus through the determination of the shape of a MW dSph's gravitational potential via line of sight velocity measurements, one could in principle deduce the impact of past tidal interactions with the MW, and thus determine its dynamical history. Additionally, luminous subhaloes experience a radial alignment of their major axes with the direction to the host halo over time, caused by tidal torquing with the host's gravitational potential during close pericentric passages. This effect is seen at all radii, even down to the half-light radii of the satellites. Radial alignment must be taken into account when calibrating weak-lensing surveys which often assume isotropic orientations of satellite galaxies surrounding host galaxies and clusters.

Book excerpt: Dwarf galaxies include some of the most extreme low-luminosity objects in the universe, and provide important windows into a wide variety of processes in galaxy formation and evolution. In this thesis, I describe a series of comparisons between observations of dwarf galaxies and predictions of the LCDM concordance cosmology, with a focus on Local Group satellites. I first correct the Milky Way satellite luminosity function for luminos- ity bias under the assumption of a typical LCDM satellite distribution, finding consistency with the observations and a prediction of possibly hundreds of faint Milky Way satellites. I also describe a new technique to connect the luminous properties of these satellites (as well as brighter galaxies) to their expected dark matter halo properties. I further consider the brightest Milky Way satellite, the Large Magellanic cloud (LMC), in a cosmological context by comparing it to similar galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This shows that LCDM n-body simulations provide a good match to observations of such satel lites. I also show that, while LMC-like satellites are not uncommon, the LMC is unusual in how blue it is, especially given that the SDSS satellites are significantly redder than typical galaxies of their size. Finally, I present a large new data for faint satellites of M31, the nearest galaxy similar to the Milky Way, providing a second data point for detailed studies of faint satellite systems. I also show that its satellites are very similar in their general properties to that of the Milky Way satellites.

Book excerpt: Understanding galaxy evolution depends on connecting large-scale structures determined by the [Lambda]CDM model with, at minimum, the small-scale physics of gas, star formation, and stellar feedback. Formation of galaxies within dark matter halos is sensitive to the physical phenomena occurring within and around the halo. This is especially true for dwarf galaxies, which have smaller potential wells and are more susceptible to the effects of tidal stripping and gas ionization and removal than larger galaxies. At dwarf galaxies scales comparisons of dark matter-only simulations with observations has unveiled various differences such as the core-cusp, the missing satellites, and the too big to fail problems. We have run suites of collisionless and hydrodynamical simulations of dwarf galaxies evolution in massive host environments to address these issues. We performed controlled, numerical simulations, which mimic the effects of baryons, in order to examine the assumptions implicitly made by dark matter-only simulations. The too big to fail problem is due to the overabundance of relatively massive, dense satellite galaxies found in simulations of Milky Way-like environments. We found that the removal of a small baryonic component from the central region of forming dwarf spheroidal galaxies and the inclusion of a disk component in the host galaxy can substantially reduce the central dark matter density of satellites, bringing simulations and observations of satellites into agreement. Additionally, we studied hydrodynamical simulations of massive host galaxies and their surrounding dwarf galaxy populations. The VELA simulation suite of cosmological zoom-in simulations is run with the ART code, stochastic star formation, and stellar feedback (supernovae feedback, stellar winds, radiation pressure, and photoionization pressure). The suite includes host galaxies with M[subscript vir](z = 0 ) = 1011 - 1012 M[sol] and their satellite dwarf galaxies and local isolated dwarf galaxies around each primary galaxy. We found that the inclusion of these relevant physical processes aligned the velocity functions and star formation histories of the dwarf galaxy populations closer to observations of the Local Group dwarf galaxies. By reproducing observations of dwarf galaxies we show how the inclusion of baryons in simulations relieves many of the discovered tensions between dark matter-only simulations and observations.

While a few satellites are visible, like the Magellanic Clouds, many other galaxies are too dim to see. Scientists suspect that these faint satellite galaxies are primarily comprised of mysterious "dark matter," which makes up 85 percent of all matter in the universe and so far remains undetected. Using supercomputers at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), Sukanya Chakrabarti, an assistant professor of physics at Florida Atlantic University, developed a mathematical method to uncover these "dark" satellites. When she applied this method to our own Milky Way galaxy, Chakrabarti discovered a faint satellite might be lurking on the opposite side of the galaxy from Earth, approximately 300,000 light-years from the galactic center. According to Chakrabarti, the dark satellite galaxies create disturbances in the cold atomic hydrogen gas at the edges of the spiral galaxy's disk, and these perturbations reveal the mass, distance and location of the satellite. With the help of NERSC systems, she successfully validated her method by analyzing the radio observations of the Whirlpool Galaxy, which has a visible satellite one-third of its size, and NGC 1512, which has a satellite one-hundredth its size. Book excerpt: "The prevailing model of structure formation that describes how matter is distributed throughout the Universe is known as the Lambda Cold Dark Matter paradigm. A key component of this paradigm is dark matter, which has so far gone undetected in laboratory experiments but is inferred from a wide variety of astrophysical observations. Although the Cold Dark Matter paradigm is extremely successful on large scales, there are significant differences between what computer simulations predict and what we observe on galaxy scales. The purpose of the work presented in this Dissertation is to address some of the issues surrounding the current structure formation paradigm and further develop some tools for investigating small scale structure. An issue that has caused recent controversy is known as the Planes of Dwarf Galaxies problem which describes the curious alignment of the Milky Way's dwarf galaxies into a thin planar structure. We have investigated this structure through time by integrating their orbits using the latest proper motion data as well as compared the distribution with current cosmological simulations and found no significant difference between the Milky Way distribution and simulations. Through analysis of observations of the disturbances in the extended neutral hydrogen disks of spiral galaxies, one can characterize dark matter substructure and the dark matter halo of a host galaxy. This process is called Tidal Analysis. Using a simple test particle code to model satellite interactions with a gas disk, we have developed a scaling relation to relate the observed density response of the disk to the mass and pericenter of a satellite. With this relation, observers can now immediately infer the recent interaction history of a spiral galaxy from neutral hydrogen studies. Changing gears to observational studies of small scale structure, we report observations of Cepheid variables in a putative dwarf galaxy located along the line of sight of the galactic plane that was first predicted through the use of Tidal Analysis. Observations are still ongoing; however, preliminary results indicate that the Cepheids are part of structure that is moving independently of the Milky Way. Finally, in an effort to use Tidal Analysis on other galaxies to constrain substructure, we have begun a 21-cm radio observing campaign of a set of spiral galaxies at redshift z=0.1 to obtain their total mass in neutral hydrogen. This unique set of galaxies also act as strong gravitational lenses, thus allowing us to use both Tidal Analysis and gravitational lensing together for the first time. We report a secure detection and mass measurement for one of our sources and six upper mass limits."--Abstract.

In particular, we consider the capacity of the models to reproduce the fundamental components and internal structure of galaxies. We begin by outlining the theoretical basis for the study, describing the standard paradigm for structure formation and the details of the modelling techniques we employ. The extent of our current understanding of the processes responsible for morphological transformation is explored and we discuss what the structure of the Milky Way and its satellites can reveal about the wider pictures of galaxy formation and cosmology. Using data from two semi-analytical models, we investigate the origin of the disks and spheroids that represent the coarse-grain detail of galactic structure. Major galaxy mergers, which have long been regarded as the main mechanism by which elliptical galaxies and spiral bulges are generated, are found to play only a minor role in spheroid formation for all but the most massive systems. The models make similar predictions in many respects but disagree on the importance of gravitationally unstable disks in forming spheroids, serving to illustrate the uncertainty that remains in modelling morphology even at this basic level. We go on to introduce a smoothed particle hydrodynamics code which includes models for radiative gas heating and cooling, the structure of the interstellar medium, star formation and evolution, chemical enrichment and feedback from supernovae. We present a set of simulations that focus on a single Milky Way-mass galaxy and its local environment and summarise its bulk properties and formation history. We also show results from a code comparison project, which aims to quantify the effects of different physical mechanisms and modelling approaches on the formation of a galaxy disk. Our simulations also resolve the formation of a population of satellite galaxies which have a luminosity function similar to those found around the Milky Way. Through comparison with a dissipationless version of the same simulation, we determine that the baryonic component in each satellite has little effect on the structure of its dark matter halo. We also find a statistically significant discrepancy between the central mass densities of the simulated and observed satellites. Finally, we consider the formation of the haloes of hot gas and stars which surround the main galaxy disk. We find qualitative agreement with several observed properties of the Milky Way's stellar halo and with recent theoretical studies of the two components in the literature.

We identify 28 member stars in Eri II, from which we measure a systemic radial velocity of $v_{\rm hel} = 75.6 \pm 1.3~\mbox{(stat.)} \pm 2.0~\mbox{(sys.)}~\mathrm{km\, s^{-1}}$ and a velocity dispersion of $6.9^{+1.2}_{-0.9}~\mathrm{km\, s^{-1}}$. Assuming that Eri~II is a dispersion-supported system in dynamical equilibrium, we derive a mass within the half-light radius of Eri II is $1.2^{+0.4}_{-0.3} \times 10^{7}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$, indicating a mass-to-light ratio of $420^{+210}_{-140}~\mathrm{M_\odot}/\mathrm{L_\odot}$ and confirming that it is a dark matter-dominated dwarf galaxy. From the equivalent width measurements of the CaT lines of 16 red giant member stars, we derive a mean metallicity of ${\rm [Fe/H]} = -2.38 \pm 0.13$ and a metallicity dispersion of $\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]} = 0.47 ^{+0.12}_{-0.09}$. The velocity of Eri II in the Galactic Standard of Rest frame is $v_{\rm GSR} = -66.6~\mathrm{km\, s^{-1}}$, indicating that either Eri II is falling into the Milky Way potential for the first time or it has passed the apocenter of its orbit on a subsequent passage. At a Galactocentric distance of $\sim$370 kpc, Eri II is one of the Milky Way's most distant satellites known. Additionally, we show that the bright blue stars previously suggested to be a young stellar population are not associated with Eri II. The lack of gas and recent star formation in Eri II is surprising given its mass and distance from the Milky Way, and may place constraints on models of quenching in dwarf galaxies and on the distribution of hot gas in the Milky Way halo. Furthermore, the large velocity dispersion of Eri II can be combined with the existence of a central star cluster to constrain MACHO dark matter with mass $\gtrsim10~\mathrm{M_\odot}$.

This object was detected as an overdensity of red, resolved stars in Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. The color-magnitude diagram of the Ursa Major dwarf looks remarkably similar to that of Sextans, the lowest surface brightness Milky Way companion known, but with approximately an order of magnitude fewer stars. Deeper follow-up imaging confirms this object has an old and metal-poor stellar population and is ≈ 100 kpc away. We roughly estimate M{sub V} = -6.75 and r12 = 250 pc for this dwarf. Its luminosity is several times fainter than the faintest known Milky Way dwarfs. However, its physical size is typical for dSphs. Even though its absolute magnitude and size are presently quite uncertain, Ursa Major is likely the lowest luminosity and lowest surface brightness galaxy yet known.

Book excerpt: As part of the Dwarf galaxies Abundances and Radial-velocities Team (DART) Programme, we have measured the metallicities of a large sample of stars in four nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph): Sculptor, Sextans, Fornax and Carina. The low mean metal abundances and the presence of very old stellar populations in these galaxies have supported the view that they are fossils from the early Universe. However, contrary to naive expectations, we find a significant lack of stars with metallicities below [Fe/H] ≈ -3 dex in all four systems. This suggests that the gas that made up the stars in these systems had been uniformly enriched prior to their formation. Furthermore, the metal-poor tail of the dSph metallicity distribution is significantly different from that of the Galactic halo. These findings show that the progenitors of nearby dSph appear to have been fundamentally different from the building blocks of the Milky Way, even at the earliest epochs.

Book excerpt: Galaxy evolution depends on a diverse suite of factors, from the environment in which the galaxy exists to the number of supernovae that explode throughout its history. The structure and stellar populations present will also be altered by a galaxy's merger history, stellar mass, star formation rate, among other influences. Some factors, like mergers, are dependent on the environment of the galaxy, while others, like feedback from star formation, are intrinsic to the galaxy themselves. Dwarf galaxies are sensitive to many of these factors due to their smaller masses, hence shallower potential wells. Dwarfs are also interesting in themselves as the least massive structures that can form stars, forming the faint limit of galaxy types. There is some indication that the evolutionary pathway of dwarfs might be different than their more massive counterparts. Indeed, some dwarfs may be the stripped remnants of larger galaxy after a major interaction. Regardless, dwarfs are thought to be the building blocks of larger galaxies via hierarchical galaxy formation and understanding these small dwarfs helps us build a more complete picture of galaxy formation and evolution at all masses. As dwarfs generally have low stellar mass, they are very faint. Our most complete sample of dwarfs is therefore restricted to those that are nearby. These nearby systems are dominated by dwarfs satellite to the Milky Way and M31. However, the evolution of these satellites will be greatly influenced by their massive host. By studying nearby isolated dwarfs, we can try to separate the secular evolutionary processes of dwarfs from the influence of their larger host. Additionally, stellar populations can be resolved in these nearby galaxies, and so their structures can be probed to much fainter regimes than integrated light studies allow.The Sagittarius Dwarf Irregular Galaxy (Sag DIG) is one of the most isolated, low mass galaxies, located at the edge of the Local Group. Its isolation from other galaxies coupled with its relative proximity provide an excellent opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of this low mass system. We preform an in-depth analysis of its resolved stellar populations and its structural properties as the first galaxy in the larger dataset, Solitary Local Dwarfs Survey (Solo). Solo is a wide field photometric study targeting every isolated dwarf galaxy within 3 Mpc of the Milky Way. Solo is based on (u)gi multi-band imaging from CFHT/MegaCam for northern targets, and Magellan/Megacam for southern targets. All galaxies fainter than M ~ -18 (in the V band) situated beyond the nominal virial radius of the Milky Way and M31 (> 300 kpc) are included in this volume-limited sample, for a total of 42 targets. For Sag DIG, we provide updated estimates of its central surface brightness and integrated luminosity, and trace its surface brightness profile to a level fainter than 30 mag./sq.arcsec. Sag DIG is well described by a highly elliptical (disk-like) system following a single component Sersic model. However, a low-level distortion is present at the outer edges of the galaxy that, were Sag DIG not so isolated, would likely be attributed to some kind of previous tidal interaction. Further, we find evidence of an extremely low level, extended distribution of stars beyond ~5 arcmins (> 1.5 kpc) that suggests Sag DIG may be embedded in a very low density stellar halo. We compare the stellar and HI structures of Sag DIG, and discuss results for this galaxy in relation to other isolated, dwarf irregular galaxies in the Local Group. Sag DIG, and the similarly isolated dwarf Aquarius, both have HI distributions that are more circular than their stellar components. In contrast, Wolf - Lundmark - Mellote (WLM), another isolated but slightly more massive dwarf, has stellar and HI components that trace each other well. Sag DIG and Aquarius also differ in that there is no signature of rotation in the HI of Sag DIG, while there is clear rotation in both the HI and stellar component for Aquarius. These preliminary comparisons demonstrate some of the potential analysis which will be possible on a much larger scale with the full Solo Survey.
