But this did not apply to military commissions. Official recognition of the system indeed is found in a Royal Warrant of Charles IL, which bears the date of 7 March 1683-84; and when purchase thus obtained the Sovereign's sanction, it was undoubtedly within his power to bring about such a result. The subsequent sale of commissions was conse quently legal, its legality having in fact been upheld in the (hurt of Chancery by Lord Nottingham' in 1682.
