Book excerpt: For centuries, Charles XII has mainly been seen in the context of Sweden's national experience, yet his activities stretched across the European continent from Russia and Denmark to Germany, Austria, Poland, Ukraine, and the Ottoman Empire. Even the Dutch Republic, Britain, and France became involved diplomatically and economically. In this volume, 20 scholars from 12 different countries contribute to creating a broader perspective on Charles XII and the Great Northern War in European history. The contributors to this volume expand the scope of international research on Charles XII and his time by examining not only his victories and defeats but the king's impact in other areas as well.

Book Synopsis The Story of an Architect King by : Renata Tyszczuk
Download or read book The Story of an Architect King written by Renata Tyszczuk and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author explores the representational strategies of the modern period and their relation to political life through the story of Stanislas Leszczynski, architect king and roi bienfaisant, 'a king that does good'. The ingredients of his story are compelling. They include: an exiled king (who makes a cameo appearance in Voltaire's Candide and corresponds with Rousseau); a collection of writings that include aphorisms, political treatises, and a utopian novel; gardens that include a grotto of eighty-six life-size automata and an experimental village of courtiers; and architecture and landscapes that traverse the contested boundaries of central Europe, imaginary constructions of the orient, and the borderlines between fact and fiction. These come together to make a distinctive account of the transitional period in eighteenth-century culture. Stanislas' architectural and literary works were rooted in an acceptance of the uncertainty of the world more characteristic of the story. His 'hope of a better age' emerges as an endeavour - through the writing and the architecture - to find one's own meaning in history as well as a model for the good life. His story suggests a way of exploring what this struggle still entails today.

Download or read book German Armies written by Peter Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German armies examines the diversity of German involvement in European conflict from the Peace of Westphalia to the age of Napoleon. Challenging assumptions of the Holy Roman Empire as weak and divided, this study provides a comprehensive account of its survival in a hostile environment of centralizing belligerent states. In contrast to the later german states, the Empire was inherently defensive, yet many of its component territories embarked on expansionist, militaristic policies, creating their own armies to advance their objectives. The author examines the resultant tensions and explains the structure and role of the different German forces. In addition, a number of wider issues are addressed, such as war and the emergence of absolutism, the rise of Austria and Prussia as great powers, non-violent forms of conflict resolution and the relative effectiveness of German military and political institutions in meeting the challenge of revolutionary France. Drawing on a range of sources, the author provides a detailed analysis of the German dimension of the great struggles against Louis XIV's France, competition for supremacy in the Baltic and Mediterranean and the prolonged wars with the Ottoman Turks. German armies extends the boundaries of military history by placing ancien regime warfare within a wider social, cultural and international context.
