Book excerpt: The history of steel dates back to the 17th century and has been instrumental in the betterment of every aspect of our lives ever since, from the pin that holds the paper together to the automobile that takes us to our destination steel touch everyone every day. Pathbreaking improvements in manufacturing techniques, access to advanced machinery and understanding of factors like heat treatment and corrosion resistance have aided in the advancement in the properties of steel in the last few years. This thesis report will attempt to elaborate upon the specific influence of composition, microstructure, and secondary processing techniques on both the static (uni-axial tensile) and dynamic (impact) properties of the four high strength steels AerMet®100, PremoMet(TM)290, 300M and Tenax(TM) 310. The steels were manufactured and marketed for commercial use by CARPENTER TECHNOLOGY, Inc (Reading, PA, USA). The specific heat treatment given to the candidate steels determines its microstructure and resultant mechanical properties spanning both static and dynamic. Test specimens of the steels were precision machined and conformed to standards specified and prescribed by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) for both tensile tests and Charpy V-Notch impact tests. Based on similarity of the secondary processing technique the candidate specialty steels were divided into two groups: (i) AerMet®100 and PremoMet(TM)290, (ii) 300M and Tenax(TM)310. The impact toughness response and resultant fracture behavior of the steels were studied at different temperatures ranging from -180°C to +170°C. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature and the final fracture behavior of the candidate steel was established at both the macroscopic and fine microscopic levels. The intrinsic microscopic mechanisms governing the impact toughness, quasi static deformation and final fracture behavior of each of the chosen high strength steels will be elaborated upon in light of the conjoint and mutually interactive influences of composition, intrinsic microstructural effects, and nature of loading.
Book Synopsis Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra-fine-grained Steels by : Toshihiro Hanamura

This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, advanced steel technologies mainly developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, for structure control, mechanical properties, and the related mechanisms are introduced and discussed. NIMS has long worked on developing advanced steel techniques, namely, producing advanced steels by using only simple alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon, and also by utilizing steel scrap. The hope is that this approach will lead to a technology of a so-called steel-to-steel recycling process, with the ultimate goal of a recycling process such as an automotive-steel-to-automotive-steel recycling process to take the place of the current cascade-type recycling system. The main idea is to utilize ultra-grain refining structures and hetero structures as well as martensite structures. In particular, the focus of this book is on tensile strength and toughness of advanced steels from both the fundamental and engineering points of view. Fundamentally, a unique approach to analysis is taken, based on fracture surface energy as effective grain size is employed to better understand the mechanism of property improvement. From the engineering point of view, in fracture toughness such factors as crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of advanced steels are evaluated in comparison with those of conventional steels.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of steel dates back to the 17th century and has been instrumental in the betterment of every aspect of our lives ever since, from the pin that holds the paper together to the Automobile that takes us to our destination steel touch everyone every day. Path breaking improvements in manufacturing techniques, access to advanced machinery and understanding of factors like heat treatment, corrosion resistance have aided in the advancement in the properties of steel in the last few years. In this dissertation document the results of a study aimed at the influence of alloy chemistry, processing and influence of the quasi static and fatigue behavior of seven alloy steels is discussed. The microstructure of the as-received steel was examined and characterized for the nature and morphology of the grains and the presence of other intrinsic features in the microstructure. The tensile, cyclic fatigue and bending fatigue tests were done on a fully automated closed-loop servo-hydraulic test machine at room temperature. The failed samples of high strength steels were examined in a scanning electron microscope for understanding the fracture behavior, especially the nature of loading be it quasi static, cyclic fatigue or bending fatigue. The quasi static and cyclic fatigue fracture behavior of the steels examined coupled with various factors contributing to failure are briefly discussed in light of the conjoint and mutually interactive influences of intrinsic microstructural effects, nature of loading, and stress (load)-deformation-microstructural interactions.
Book Synopsis The Relationship of Microstructure to Strength and Toughness in High-strength Steel by : John Henry Bucher
Download or read book The Relationship of Microstructure to Strength and Toughness in High-strength Steel written by John Henry Bucher and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the relationship of elements of microstructure to the fracture characteristics of a group of commercially produced steels, heat-treated to ultra-high strength levels. The microstructures were characterized in terms of optical microscopy, electron diffraction, and electron fractography. Fractographic studies were made of fractured surfaces broken in impact at +25 and -196 C as a function of tempering temperature, in slow bending at ambient temperature, in a modified bend test in which slow and fast propagation stages were effected, and on surfaces produced in tensile fractures. The fracture characteristics were studied by means of an instrumented bend test and in terms of the plastic instability generated in the torsion test. The instrumented bend test yielded data on criteria for the onset of slow crack propagation and for the onset of rapid propagation, including the effect of the total stored energy in the system. Plastic instability in torsion was studied as a function of specimen section size in AISI 4340 steel. A 250,000 psi yield strength Maraging steel was studied in a standard size test bar. (Author).

This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The yield strength range for steels from 180 to 210 ksi is currently covered by four weldable alloys of the following nominal chemical analysis: 18%Ni-8%Co-3%Mo maraging steel, 12%Ni-5%Cr-3%Mo maraging steel, 9%Ni-4%Co-0.20%C quenched and tempered (Q and T) steel, and 10%Ni-8%Co-2%Cr-1%Mo-0.10%C Q and T steel. Broad ranges of fracture resistance have been reported for these materials based on various fracture tests, and this report presents information for material selection and design guidance by providing an analysis of the interactions between the metallurgical and mechanical parameters that contribute to the fracture resistance of plate products. Definitions of the interaction between the metallurgical and the mechanical aspects are developed with the use of the Dynamic Tear (DT) test and the Ratio Analysis Diagram (RAD). (Author).

Book Synopsis Microstructure and Fracture Toughness of Cast and Forged Ultra-High-Strength, Low-Alloy (UHSLA) Steels by : J. Buchar
Download or read book Microstructure and Fracture Toughness of Cast and Forged Ultra-High-Strength, Low-Alloy (UHSLA) Steels written by J. Buchar and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the fracture toughness and microstructure relations for ultra-high-strength, low-alloy (UHSLA) steels corresponding to AISI 4340 composition. The steels were either cast or forged, heat treated at austenitizing temperatures from 840 to 1100°C, oil quenched and tempered at 180 and 650°C. Fracture toughness, tensile, and Charpy impact toughness tests, and testing of apparent fracture toughness under the influence of notch root radius, were performed simultaneously. Investigation of microstructures and corresponding mechanical properties, as well as fractographic examinations and evaluation of chemical heterogeneity, made it possible to elucidate the alteration of fracture behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program was conducted to investigate the practical application of stress-wave monitoring techniques to the detection of crack initiation and/or growth by determining the correlation between stress-wave emission and prefracture mechanical processes occurring in high strength steels under stress as affected by material properties and test conditions. D6aC steel in two heat treatment conditions (600F temper and 1075F temper) and grade 200 and grade 300, 18% nickel maraging steel were investigated using standard accelerometer techniques at a sensitivity level of approximately 0.01g. It was found that stress wave activity at this level was a positive indication of nucleation of cracks of greater than 0.00001-sq in. the growth of existing cracks by a similar area. The effects of varying test temperature from -100F to 250F and varying strain were investigated. The stress-wave activity was found to be little affected by test temperature for temperatures above the material brittle-ductile transition region and to vary roughly proportionally with strain rate. For test temperatures in the ductile-brittle transition region the stress wave activity decreases rapidly with decreasing temperature. The application of stress-wave monitoring techniques to the monitoring of the hydrotest of solid rocket chambers is discussed. It is concluded that the techniques provide a means of non-destructively detecting and locating propagating flaws in structures under stress, allowing test or service termination prior to catastrophic failure.

Book Synopsis Metallurgical Variables Affecting Fracture Toughness in High-strength Sheet Alloys by : Carl E. Hartbower
Download or read book Metallurgical Variables Affecting Fracture Toughness in High-strength Sheet Alloys written by Carl E. Hartbower and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using precracked Charpy tests supplemented by center-notched tensile tests, the fracture toughness of five low-alloy and three stainless steel high-strength alloys in sheet form was measured primarily as a function of heat treatment variables such as austenitizing and tempering temperatures. The low alloy steels studied were D6AC (two heats)4340 (martensitic and bainitic conditions), X200 (0.35 and 0.40% carbon), 300M and H11; and the stainless steels were AM 355, PH 15-7Mo and 301. For 4340, in the bainitic condition, the influence of subsequent deformation and aging on fracture toughness was also determined. In addition, preliminary studies of the effect of welding both before and after heat treatment on the toughness of H11, 300M and 4340 were carried out. (Author).
