Download or read book The Last Rosenwald School of Burke County, North Carolina: An Historic Gem Recognized written by Christopher Hunt Robertson, M.Ed. and published by Christopher Hunt Robertson, M.Ed.. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was the first publication to present the Rosenwald Schools of Burke County, NC. With five schools built, Burke County was a full participant in the historic Rosenwald Movement that improved so many lives, families and communities across the South. The historic Rosenwald (Canal) School still stands in Lake James’ Bridgewater community, west of Morganton. A legacy of the Corpening family of pioneer educators that served Burke for over 25 years, it is the last surviving complete structure to represent Burke's early African-American schools. The discovery of an extant Rosenwald school provides an opportunity to document, or preserve, a structure representing the educational achievements of early African-American citizens. (In 2015, this work received an Award of Excellence from the North Carolina Society of Historians. In 2016, the Burke County Commissioners installed a permanent exhibit at the History Museum of Burke County to commemorate the county's five Rosenwald schools.)

This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1856, the Dunavants had begun building railroads and they would eventually be among the South's prominent railroad contractors. As they migrated from Virginia to North Carolina and Tennessee, they added to those regions new railroads, mills, hotels, golf clubs, dams and tunnels. For 73 years, from 1856 to 1929, their large-scale construction projects contributed substantially to the development of Southside Virginia, Western North Carolina (Morganton, Charlotte, Statesville, Asheville and Blowing Rock), Tennessee (Memphis), and other southern states. The naming of Dunavant Street in Charlotte paid homage to former resident and builder, Henry Jackson Dunavant. In downtown Morganton, Samuel David Dunavant organized Burke County’s first mill (the Dunavant Cotton Mnfg. Co., later known as the Alpine Cotton Mill); its building has been added to the National Historic Register. (2015 Recipient of a History Book Award and a Family History Book Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians)

Book Synopsis The North Carolina Gazetteer, 2nd Ed by : William S. Powell
Download or read book The North Carolina Gazetteer, 2nd Ed written by William S. Powell and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Carolina Gazetteer first appeared to wide acclaim in 1968 and has remained an essential reference for anyone with a serious interest in the Tar Heel State, from historians to journalists, from creative writers to urban planners, from backpackers to armchair travelers. This revised and expanded edition adds approximately 1,200 new entries, bringing to nearly 21,000 the number of North Carolina cities, towns, crossroads, waterways, mountains, and other places identified here. The stories attached to place names are at the core of the book and the reason why it has stood the test of time. Some recall faraway places: Bombay, Shanghai, Moscow, Berlin. Others paint the locality as a little piece of heaven on earth: Bliss, Splendor, Sweet Home. In many cases the name derivations are unusual, sometimes wildly so: Cat Square, Huggins Hell, Tater Hill, Whynot. Telling us much about our own history in these snapshot histories of particular locales, The North Carolina Gazetteer provides an engaging, authoritative, and fully updated reference to place names from all corners of the Tar Heel State.
