Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the twenty-fifth in a series of surveys sponsored annually by MetLife since 1984 as a public service. This 25th anniversary edition includes the views of teachers, principals and students and looks back to the earliest MetLife Surveys to examine how perspectives on teachers, teaching and public education have changed. It documents current attitudes, examines trends and considers future implications, addressing teacher satisfaction with careers; academic standards and curriculum; student success; professional relationships and communication; school conditions; parent and community relations; and challenges beyond the classroom. This research combined both quantitative and qualitative methods, and an online strategy session with public school principals and teacher leaders. Many of the findings are substantially more positive than they have been in the past, including improvement in teacher assessment of the state of the profession, and trends in student achievement. However, educators in urban schools were found to be significantly less positive than colleagues in suburban and rural schools. The following are appended: (1) Methodology; and (2) Questionnaires. (Contains 8 footnotes and 132 figures.) [For the 2007 (twenty-fourth) edition of this survey, see ED500012.].

Book excerpt: MetLife has sponsored and Harris Interactive has conducted the annual MetLife Survey of the American Teacher series since 1984 to share the voices of teachers with educators, policymakers and the public. The series examines significant changes and trends over time, highlights important current issues, and explores topics relevant to the future of education, teaching and student success. Throughout the MetLife Survey series, reports have noted the important ways in which the experiences of teachers, principals and students can vary depending on the school setting, including such factors as school level (elementary, middle and high school), school location (urban, suburban, rural), and student population (proportion of low income students and/or minority students). This brief presents selected findings from recent survey reports highlighting views from rural schools. (Contains 2 figures.).

Book excerpt: Recent research identifies increased parent involvement in education as a promising method to bolster student achievement. Statistics show that while many traditional white, middle class families have found ways to be involved with their children's schooling, our nation now needs to find ways to include more minority parents in their children's education. Most educators and parents would agree that minority parent involvement in education is essential; the mechanics of developing sensitive, realistic, and workable home-school relationships are more elusive. It requires a concerted effort by all involved to understand more about the complex parent-school relationship and to develop specific plans to help families. This comprehensive volume features substantial material from the nation's most renowned research projects on parent involvement—Stanford University's Center for the Study of Families, Children and Youth, the Johns Hopkins University's Center for Research on Elementary and Middle Schools, the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and the National Catholic Education Association. In addition to a section on research, the book includes a section on practice that presents research-tested strategies on working with minority parents (Asian, American Indian, Hispanic, African American, and other minority groups). The book concludes with a section on future challenges that educators must confront and appendices on promising national programs and helpful resource materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993, this book attempts to provide a basic but challenging and rigorous introduction to the issues of inequality in teacher education affecting many of today’s societies. Education systems around the world, in common with much else, are undergoing radical change. In such times there are the almost inevitable casualties, in this case the fate of multicultural, multiracial, antiracist education. The authors argue that there is a need for teacher education to be responsive to the needs of a culturally and socially diverse society. It has become obvious that in spite of the vast amount of effort given to it over the last few decades, very little real progress has been made. By highlighting examples of good practices, this book demonstrates how they can be maintained and enhanced.
