Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Non-Ferrous Metals In the present volume an effort has been made to supply students and metallurgists with a concise treatise dealing with the principles on which the various processes which concern the non-ferrous metals are based, and with the manner in which the processes are carried out in typical modern works. The general plan followed is to consider under the name of each metal (1) its physical and chemical properties; (2) the alloy of which it is the chief constituent; (3) the composition and applications of commercial brands, and the effects of substances which interfere with those applications; (4) the chief ores and the processes by which the metal is extracted from them or other sources, and refined or made suitable for industrial or other purposes; (5) the principles and conditions on which the success of these processes depend; (6) the furnaces and appliances employed in the processes, and the chemical changes and reactions which occur in the operations; (7) examples of actual practice followed at the present time in important extraction works. Much that is not essential and processes which are obsolete have been omitted, while those which are falling into disuse are only briefly described. In the chapters dealing with gold, silver, copper, and lead special care has been taken to keep pace with the progress which has been made in the metallurgy of these metals, and it is believed that no important modern successful process has been omitted. Many of the illustrations are original, and a considerable number of the others have been selected from papers by well-knowrn metallurgists, the sources in all cases being acknowledged. The aim of the book is not only to help the student, but the author has also in view a wider circle than those merely who are going through a course of metallurgical training, and hopes that others who are actually engaged in practical work may find its pages worth consulting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Furnace as Applied to Metallurgy The following pages contain a list of magazine references on the construction and Operation of the electric furnace as applied to the metallurgy of iron and steel and the non-ferrous metals. An attempt has been made to include all the import ant references since 1900, at which time the electric furnace was becoming established in the iron and steel industry. Since 1907 the reference to Chemical Abstracts is given in addition to the magazine references, since this source will enable the reader to eliminate many of the references here given as unsuitable for his particular needs. Criticism of the arrangement of this work is cordially invited, since we desire to make such studies of the greatest value to all interested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metallurgy of Copper My aim in preparing this book has been to furnish a treatise on copper which will meet the demands of the metallurgist of to-day. In order to do this, it has been necessary: to present the leading physical and chemical facts about the metal, its alloys, and its compounds which are of metallurgical importance; to record from the older practice that which is of lasting value; and to give the details of the present modes of operating. Though we have several books treating of certain branches of the metallurgy of copper, such as the valuable volumes of Peters, Greenawalt, and others, there does not exist a modern book which covers the entire ground as the present work aims to do. In the study of processes there are given the principles and the practice. The discussion of principles is confined to the essential points; for an extended presentation the reader is referred to my treatise on General Metallurgy. The examples of practice are drawn mainly from the United States. The text and footnotes will show that the technical literature on copper has been covered. The details of practice, not recorded in print, have been obtained through visits to and detailed studies of the leading copper smelteries and refineries of the United States; additional information has been available through correspondence. The tables giving the working data of the leading plants of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Australia show the extent of the field which has been covered. In all my visits and correspondence I have met with the greatest cordiality and liberality. I wish to express here my obligation to the heads and officers of the different smelteries and refineries for the assistance they have rendered me in my task; without this cordial and liberal aid it would not have been possible to prepare this treatise. In working out the details, especially in the large number of calculations, I have been much assisted by the collaboration of my colleague Professor C.R. Hayward. The reading of the page-proof by Professor G.A. Roush detected errata which had escaped my own revision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Furnaces as Applied to Non-Ferrous Metallurgy Potassium - This metal is very similar to sodium in its properties and methods of production. It is obtained in small quantities 'by electrolysis of fused caustic potash. In view of the high price of potash salts and of the fact that metallic sodium ser'ves most, if not all, of the purposes for which potassium could be employed, the latter metal is not made on a very considerable scale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Common Metals: Gold, Silver, Iron (and Steel), Copper, Lead and Zinc Since 1913, the date of the last edition, such radical changes and improvements have been made in the-metallurgy of the common metals, that this edition of 1921 has been largely rewritten to bring it in accord with present practice, as will be seen by examination of the following pages. Great pains have been taken to clearly set forth underlying principles and at the same time to give the details of methods and of metallurgical equip ment, and their cost. It is realized that, due to the rapid advance in prices, the costs of operation have lately been subject to serious modification. A chapter has been devoted to questions of the economic situation of the business of metallurgy. Little attempt has been made to describe methods not now in use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Metallurgy: An Introduction to the Metallurgy of the Metals There is published in the United States no work which covers the subject of introductory or general metallurgy. The classic on this subject, "An Introduction to the Study of Metallurgy," by the distinguished late Sir William Roberts-Austen, has not been revised for a number of years. The author in his work in teaching metallurgy has frequently felt the lack of a suitable reference and text-book on the important subject of introductory metallurgy, and knows that this want is shared by others. This volume endeavors to supply this want. The subject is treated from the modern view-points, and metallurgists in general will probably find something of interest in the volume, particularly in the chapters on alloys, measurement of high temperatures, slags, and mattes. The sources of information are fully covered by references in foot-notes, by means of which the author acknowledges his indebtedness to the many workers in the scientific fields which have a bearing on the subject in hand. For material for the chapter on "Metals from the Historic Point of View" is derived in part from the works of Roesing and Neumann, to whom the author expresses his indebtedness. For material in the chapter on "Slag" the author has drawn largely on the invaluable work of J. H. L. Vogt, which has been so far unrecognized in this country. The following firms and individuals have kindly assisted by the loan of photographs and drawings: Mr. Edward S. Shephard of Denver; The Allis Chalmers Company of Milwaukee; The United-Otto By-product Coke Oven Company of New York; The Colorado Iron Works Company of Denver; The Crosby Manufacturing Company of Boston; and the Wellman, Seaver, Morgan Company of Cleveland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Common Metals: Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper, Lead, and Zinc This outline of the metallurgy of the common metals, namely, gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, and zinc, is devoted to the description of processes for winning these metals from their ores and then refining them. The metallurgy of iron is treated only to the point where pig-iron is obtained. Following the description of ores, as well as of the fuels used in smelting them, and the materials of which the furnaces are con structed, we come to sampling, for the determination of the exact value of the ore before treatment. A chapter has been devoted to the subject of thermo-chemistry as applied to igneous methods of extraction. The winning or reduction of' the various metals is then taken up in order, and is followed by. A description of the methods of refining them. Attention is then given to commercial considerations, since the processes must be conducted in a profitable way.
