Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mining and Metallurgy of Gold and Silver His object has rather been to render this volume practically useful as a record of well-authenticated facts, and of the results of actual experience, than to advance new theories, or to accumulate additional evidence in support of old ones. He has, therefore, contented himself with merely stating the results both of his own observations, and those of others; or at most with suggesting the nature of the forces producing the effects described. He believes that our knowledge of chemical geology is not, as yet, sufficiently advanced to warrant an attempt to form a general theory of the formation of mineral veins. Recent observations and experience appear, however, to lead to three important conclusions. First, that the most productive gold bearing rocks are by no means exclusively confined to the Silurian period; secondly, that aqueous agencies have been, and still are, actively at work in the formation of mineral deposits; and, thirdly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Metallurgy, Vol. 1: Copper, Lead, Silver, Gold IT is a curious fact that there does not exist in the English language a single complete treatise on Metallurgy. There are a number of smaller text-books, mainly adapted to the use of students, which cover the entire field, but make no pretence of describing it with any thoroughness of detail; and there are a number of very admirable works dedicated to the metallurgy of individual metals. Had my respected teacher, the late Dr. John Percy, ever carried out his magnificent idea of a comprehensive series of volumes on this subject, the ideal of. An exhaustive work on Metallurgy would have been produced, although its bulk would have attained the formidable dimensions of a small library in itself - an advantage perhaps to the specialist, but a less commendable feature for those who have to deal with general Metallurgy. Such being the position of our literature of this subject, I venture to think that I am rendering the English metallurgist a distinct service in submitting to him a translation of the most recent and most exhaustive work on the subject in any language, from the pen of that eminent metallurgical authority, Dr. C. Schnabel, of Clausthal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of Gold: A Practical Treatise on the Metallurgical Treatment of Gold-Bearing Ores, Including the Processes of Concentration, Chlorination, and Extraction by Cyanide, and the Assaying, Melting, and Refining of Gold In this volume my aim has been to present in a condensed form such an account of the several processes which are generally used for the Extraction of Gold from the Ore as shall be sufficient for the full information of investors, and others interested in gold mining operations, who may wish to gain an intelligent insight into the modus operandi at the gold mines. At the same time I have given full descriptions, with illustrations, of the machinery employed in those processes, in sufficient detail to make the book of substantial value to professional men and manufacturers concerned in the gold-mining industry. The treatment of gold-bearing ores, although at one time so uncertain in its results as to be, not only a hazardous, but almost a purely speculative business, has now, through continued improvements in appliances and the adoption of more economical methods, developed into a settled industry, in which more or less profitable results may be obtained even from comparatively low grade ores. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Common Metals: Gold, Silver, Iron (and Steel), Copper, Lead and Zinc Since 1913, the date of the last edition, such radical changes and improvements have been made in the-metallurgy of the common metals, that this edition of 1921 has been largely rewritten to bring it in accord with present practice, as will be seen by examination of the following pages. Great pains have been taken to clearly set forth underlying principles and at the same time to give the details of methods and of metallurgical equip ment, and their cost. It is realized that, due to the rapid advance in prices, the costs of operation have lately been subject to serious modification. A chapter has been devoted to questions of the economic situation of the business of metallurgy. Little attempt has been made to describe methods not now in use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Common Metals, Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper, Lead, and Zinc This outline of the metallurgy of the common metals, namely, gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, and zinc, is devoted to the de scription of the processes of winning the metals from their ores and to the refining of these metals, except iron, the metallurgy of which is treated only to the point where pig iron is obtained. Following the description of ores, as well as of the fuels used in treating them, and the materials of Which the furnaces are composed, we come to their sampling, for the determination of their exact value before treatment. A chapter has been devoted to the subject of thermo - chemistry as applicable to igneous methods of extraction. The winning or reduction of the various metals is then taken up in order and is followed by a description of the methods of refining them. Attention is then given to commercial considerations, since the processes must be conducted in a profitable way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Precious Metals: Comprising Gold, Silver and Platinum In the preparation of this work, the aim has been to provide an introduction to the studyof the precious metals, and an elementary book of reference for those who do not wish to pursue the subject. Further. With these objects in View details have been generally omitted and a wide extent of ground has been covered, including the technical pro cesses of minting and'the manufacture of gold and silver wares. It need hardly be mentioned, however, that all questions of currency and finance have been left untouched. It is also perfectly Obvious that the book is not intended to be a substitute for the larger treatises on metallurgy, some of which devote the whole of a bulky volume to the full consideration of a section of the subject dealt with here in the course of a few pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roasting of Gold and Silver Ores and the Extraction of Their Respective Metals Without Quicksilver The Solving Process is very simple, and readily performed by common workmen; besides the lime, only brimstone must be provided, in order to prepare the necessary chem icals for solving and precipitation. It is a general but erroneous belief, that the solving is a slow process. An amalgamating pan is charged with 500 to pounds of roasted ore, and treated at least six hours, and therefore turns out at most two tons in 24 hours while a box or vat of proper size used in the Solving Process, can work from four to five tons in the same time.
