Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message of the Parables The Bruce Lectureship, the object of which is to foster a love of New Testament study, was founded in memory of Professor A. B. Bruce, of the Free Church College, Glasgow, whose exegetical work on the New Testament, especially on the Gospels, has been an inspiration to many, far beyond the bounds of his class-room, of his Church, or of his country. One of the bestknown works of Professor Bruce is "The Parabolic Teaching of Christ." The author chose as the subject of his Bruce Lectures "The Teaching Methods of Jesus with Special Reference to the Parable." The lectures as delivered have now been revised, and enlarged by the addition of an exposition of the individual parables. The author tenders grateful thanks to the editors of The Speaker's Bible for permission to use, in abbreviated form, his contribution on "The Prodigal Son" and to the editors of The Expository Times for permission to use, in abbreviated form, his contribution on; "The Unjust Steward" in the number for September, 1926; also to his wife for help in correcting the proof-sheets. It was, as we have already seen, practiced under the Old Testament dispensation, and appears to have been very generally afterward adopted by the rabbis even down to the time of Christ. Its advantages are obvious. Experience has demonstrated that this sort of composition is better calculated to command attention, to captivate the imagination, to affect the heart, and to make deep and lasting impressions on the memory, than the most ingenious and most elegant discourses. Besides, the very obscurity in which para bles are sometimes involved has the effect of exciting a greater degree of curiosity and interest, and of urging the mind to a more vigorous exertion of its powers, than any other mode of instruction. There is some thing for the understanding to work upon, and when the concealed meaning is at length elicited, we are apt to value ourselves on the discovery, as the effect of our own penetration and discernment, and for that very rea son to pay more regard to the moral it conveys. It gave ex pression to thoughts which burdened the mind of Jesus throughout His ministry. On the day He uttered it, he had left the house and was sitting by the sea-side, and there were gathered unto Him great multitudes. He had no difficulty in finding an audience. It is one of the greatest pleasures to listen to a good speaker. It is a pleasure which attracts young and old, rich and poor, educated and uneducated. A good speaker is always sure of an audience, and especially where he has not to encounter the rivalry of books. But as Jesus watched the crowd assembling, and perceived the various dispositions with which the people came, He could not but reflect how much of what He had to say must certainly be lost on many. He knew He had that to tell men which. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament F the matter contained in these pages, a small portion has already been published in a series of articles in the Quiver; the greater part is new. It will be seen at once that the work has no claim to originality or independent research or to that wealth of imagination and learning which has made Trench's Notes on the Parables of the New Testament one of the most valuable books of our generation. It addresses itself to simple readers; and is merely a help to Bible reading. Its object is to group together in right connexion and gradation all the phases of parabolic teaching by comparison which present themselves in the Old Testament; to suggest the study of certain striking passages, which are usually too apt to be overlooked and to bring out - what in these days it is especially meces sary to dwell upon - the preparatory character (in this respect as in others) of the teaching of the older Scriptures, leading up to the perfect-revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in Whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations. Their own history showed that He was not the God of the Hebrews only but the God of the Gentiles also; and the King dom which their prophets foretold was not a Hebrew Kingdom only but a world Kingdom. And all they in the Synagogue says the sacred historian, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him'down headlong, but he passing through the midst of them went his way. Ever after Jesus spoke of the Kingdom of God in parables that seeing they might see and not perceive. He veiled the truth which unveiled had been rejected with such wrath, and he did so that they might listen to him without perceiving the truth to which they would refuse to listen if they did perceive it, and that so he might conduct them to his predetermined destination while they did not even know that they were on the jour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables: Read in the Light of the Present Day Dr. Guthrie was born at Brechin, in Forfarshire, July 12, 1803, and was a younger son of the late Mr. David Guthrie, merchant and banker in that ancient city. The family was one of great respectability and considerable antiquity, having been connected with Brechin for more than two hundred years. With one or two short intervals the office of Provost has been held in succession by five members of the family, the present occupant being John Guthrie, M.D., Dr. Guthrie's nephew. It is probable, but not certain, that Dr. Guthrie was a lineal descendant of the well-known Rev. William Guthrie, author of the "Trial of a Saving Interest in Christ," who was cousin of James Guthrie, the martyr. At the very least he was a kinsman of both, and Dr. Guthrie used to refer with pride to his connection with the martyr, who was not only, like himself, a Forfarshire man, but connected with the town of Brechin, having been owner of a small estate in its immediate neighbourhood. Alexander, one of Dr. Guthrie's elder brothers, was a medical man, who enjoyed a large practice and no small local reputation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Parables of Our Lord All freely acknowledge the great superiority of Dean Trench's work on the Parables to any other on the subject in the English language. Unsurpassed by none in depth of spiritual insight or in truly evangelical sentiment, it is nu rivaled by any in elaborateness and critical value, or in familiar and felicitous use of the labors of others, ancient and modern. The author would seem to have left well-nigh nothing unexamined that could by possibility throw even a side-light on his theme. To the Christian student, the book is as invaluable as it is delightful. But the size and consequent cost of the work have kept it beyond the easy reach of very many, and both size and cost are objections the more fatal - to multitudes of laymen especially - in that nearly, if not quite, one-third of the book is in the shape of notes in other languages - Greek, Latin, French, and German. It must be confessed, too, that the style, excellent as it is in some respects, is often lacking in conciseness and simplicity.
