Book excerpt: Few can have imagined, when Rolls Royce first ran its new PV-12 aero engine in 1933, that the soon re-named Merlin would go on to be the most famous engine in the world. In a production run that lasted from 1936 to 1956, Rolls Royce built over 160,000 Merlins in 50 different variants, and over 50,000 examples were built in the USA under the Packard name. The early versions of the Merlin produced around 1000 horsepower, but late version Merlins were rated at up to 2000hp and it was Merlin and Packard engines that powered some of the most famous aircraft ever flown, including the Hawker Hurricane, North American P-51 Mustang, the Avro Lancaster and the de Havilland Mosquito. The inside story of the most famous engine/aircraft combination in history is told in The Merlin Engine Spitfires Handbook. Using original RAF 'Pilot's Notes' from the Crécy Publishing archive, this handbook reproduces the unabridged content, typography and illustration of those historic documents. Covering the Mk1 Spitfire, the Mk9 Spitfire and the Mk16 Spitfire, the reader can see the progression and development of the Spitfire - from the first pre-war version with its Merlin II engine, to the ultimate Spitfire/Merlin combination the 1943 Spitfire 16 with its American-built Packard Merlin 266. The Merlin Engine Spitfires Handbook puts the reader into the cockpit of these iconic aircraft, seeing the very documents those Spitfire pilots had to hand as they flew and fought in possibly the best-known fighter aircraft of all time, a witness to the increasing power and capability of this supreme engine/aircraft pairing.

Book excerpt: This is reset, facsimile edition of the incredibly rare operational manual for the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine used in the Spitfire I and Hurricane I in 1940. Published by Rolls-Royce, PILOT'S NOTES: MERLIN II III & IV, 4TH EDITION APRIL 1940 was a miniature sixteen-page hardback booklet issued to RAF fighter pilots flying Spitfires and Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain. It provided a crib sheet of key characteristics, instrument and engine settings that should be adhered to whilst flying with a single Merlin-engined aircraft. The Rolls-Royce Merlin is the most recognisable aero engine in the world, powering the Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster, Mosquito and Mustang, the aircraft that made the difference between victory and defeat at critical moments in the Second World War - the Battle of Britain and the allied aerial offensive against Germany. The Merlin was literally the engine that won the war. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rolls-Royce Ltd was originally a British luxury car but entered the aero engine manufacturing business in the First World War. First established in 1904 by the partnership of Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, it's car and aero engine divisions were later split and today it is arguably the most important aero engine manufacturer in the world.

Book excerpt: The Rolls-Royce Merlin liquid-cooled V-12 piston aero engine is considered an icon of British engineering with a worldwide recognition. It was one of the most successful aircraft engines of the Second World War period and its incremental development ran hand in hand with that of the legendary Supermarine Spitfire to which it was fitted from the very beginning. From its genesis in the 740hp PV-12 engine that was first flown in 1935, the Merlin went through rapid development during the war years until in its ultimate version, the Merlin 130 series designed specifically for the de Havilland Hornet, it produced over 2,600hp. Merlin engines powered many more of the best-known Allied combat aircraft of the war including the Hawker Hurricane, Boulton Paul Defiant, P-51 Mustang, Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, and the de Havilland Mosquito. Many variants of Merlin were built by Rolls-Royce at their factories in Derby, Crewe and Glasgow, as well as by Ford of Britain at their Trafford Park factory near Manchester. The Packard V-1650 was a license-built version of the Merlin made in the United States. When Merlin production finally ceased in 1950, almost 150,000 engines had been delivered.

Book excerpt: The most iconic planes of WWII, the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, DeHavilland Mosquito and the Avro Lancaster, were all powered by one engine, the Rolls-Royce Merlin. The story of the Merlin is one of British ingenuity at its height, of artistry and problem-solving that resulted in a war-winning design. Published to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day and the 80th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Britain, Merlin is the extraordinary story of the development of the Rolls-Royce engine that would stop Hitler from invading Britain and carry the war to the very heart of Germany. The story of the Merlin engine encompasses the history of powered flight, from the ingenuity of the Wright Brothers to the horrors of World War I, and from the first crossing of the Atlantic to the heady days of flying in the 1920s. There is also the extraordinary story of the Schneider Trophy - an international contest wherein nations poised on the precipice of war competed for engineering excellence in the name of progress. And at the heart of this story are the glamourous lives of the pilots, many of whom died in their pursuit of speed; the engineers, like Henry Royce of Rolls-Royce, who sketched the engine that would win WWII in the sand of his local beach; and perhaps most importantly the Lady Lucy Houston who after the Wall Street Crash singlehandedly funded the development of the engine and the iconic Spitfire. Never was so much owed by so many to so few - and without the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the few would have been powerless.

Book excerpt: A celebration of the machine and the men who took to the skies in defence of Britain. It is also the dramatic illustration of a little understood truth: the Spitfire did more than win the Battle of Britain - it won the war. It was not Stalingrad which turned the corner of the war against Hitler, it was the Spitfire in the summer of 1940 when RAF Fighter Command destroyed the myth of Nazi invincibility. Book excerpt: An illustrated guide to the Supermarine Spitfire, used by the Royal Air Force and Allies in World War II, with an introduction by Air Vice Marshal and flying ace James Edgar Johnson. "Men came from every corner of the free world to fly and fight in Spitfires. Men from countries where freedom had a meaning in their minds. A babel of tongues chattered in her cockpit, and all came to love her for her throughbread qualities. Today there are only a handful of Spitfires still flying, and seldom can be heard taht nostalgic whistling call ass she arcs across the sky. But occassionally, after all these years, I am privileged to fly in that familiar cockpit again when the song of her Merlin engine brings back a hundred memories of those valiant years." —Air Vice-Marshal Johnnie Johnson, from the Introduction
