Book excerpt: "Central to the repertoire of Western art music since the 18th century, the symphony has come to be regarded as one of the ultimate compositional challenges. Surprisingly, heretofore there has been no truly extensive, broad-based treatment of the genre, and the best of the existing studies are now several decades old. In this five-volume series, A. Peter Brown explores the symphony from its 18th-century beginnings to the end of the 20th century. Synthesizing the enormous scholarly literature, Brown presents up-to-date overviews of the status of research, discusses any important former or remaining problems of attribution, illuminates the style of specific works and their contexts, and samples early writings on their reception. The Symphonic Repertoire provides an unmatched compendium of knowledge for the student, teacher, performer, and sophisticated amateur. The series is being launched with two volumes on the Viennese symphony."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis The Mendelssohn Family (1729–1847) by : Sebastian Hensel
Download or read book The Mendelssohn Family (1729–1847) written by Sebastian Hensel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sebastian Hensel (1830–98), nephew of the composer, virtuoso pianist and conductor Felix Mendelssohn (1809–47), originally intended this work to be 'not only of the family but for the family', drawing on their letters and diaries. Persuaded by friends to publish his narrative in 1879, Hensel in particular provides a first-hand insight into the lives of his uncle, lionized by the music-loving public of his day, and Felix's beloved sister Fanny (1805–47), herself a talented composer and pianist. Translated from the German revised second edition by Felix's close friend, diplomat Carl Klingemann (1798–1862), this 1881 two-volume collection made available for the first time in English a great deal of valuable source material. Covering the period 1729–1835, Volume 1 charts the family's history from the birth of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn to the death of his son, banker Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy, who was the father of Felix.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mendelssohn Family (1729-1847) From Letters and Journals, Vol. 1 The work I now offer to the public was originally undertaken for a very different purpose and from a very different point of view. It was intended to be a bio graphy not only of the family but for the family; I wished my children to know a little more of their fore fathers than is generally the case, especially among the middle classes. Some few friends saw this family biography, ' compiled about fifteen years ago, and expressed a wish to see it published. I have preserved its original form as much as possible, and hope that it will be read as the chronicle of a good middle-class family in Germany. Book Synopsis Nine Letters on Landscape Painting by : Carl Gustav Carus
Download or read book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting written by Carl Gustav Carus and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and science. Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first edition appears here in English for the first time.
