Book Synopsis The New Art Museum Library by : Amelia Nelson
Download or read book The New Art Museum Library written by Amelia Nelson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Art Museum Library addresses the issues facing today's art museum libraries through a series of scholarly essays written by top librarians in the field. In 2007, the publication, Art Museum Libraries and Librarianship, edited by Joan Benedetti, was the first to solely focus on the field of art museum librarianship. In the decade since then, many changes have occurred in the field--both technological and ideological--prompting the need for a follow-up publication. In addition to representing current thinking and practice, this new publication also addresses the need to clearly articulate and define the art museum library’s value within its institution. It documents the broad changes in the environment that art museum libraries now function within and to celebrate the many innovative initiatives that are flourishing in this new landscape. Librarians working in art museum face unique challenges as museums redefine what object-based, visitor-centric learning looks like in the 21st century. These unique challenges mean that art museum libraries are developing new strategies and initiatives so that they can continue to thrive in this environment. The unique nature of these initiatives mean that they will be useful to librarians working in a wide range of special libraries, as well as more broadly in academic and public libraries. The New Art Museum Library is uniquely positioned to present new strategies and initiatives including digital art history initiatives, the new norms in art museum library staffing, and the public programing priorities that are core to many art museum libraries today. This book is an endorsed project of ARLIS/NA.

Download or read book Anxious Objects written by Patterson Sims and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication accompanies the first survey of Willie Cole's work from the late 1980s to the present. Cole was born and raised in New Jersey and has resided in the state his entire life. The exhibition and catalogue focus on Cole's mixed media sculptural works made from salvaged irons, blow dryers, ironing boards, high-heeled shoes, lawn jockeys, and bicycle parts; paintings and drawings made of iron scorch marks, and prints. Cole's consumer and domestic objects assume the appearance of objects from another time, culture, or place, transformed into powerful cultural and spiritual evocations referencing African and global culture. His art is solidly based in studious appreciation rather than humorous imitation or ironic appropriation." "The exhibition was organized by Patterson Sims. In this catalogue, Sims offers a broad introduction to Cole and detailed descriptions of the works included in the show. The text traces Cole's thinking, process, and evolution and the influence of his life-long residency in New Jersey. This catalogue also includes an insightful interview between the artist and Leslie King-Hammond, Dean of Graduate Studies, Maryland Institute College of Art; a short essay by Lowery Stokes Sims, President of the Studio Museum in Harlem, related to Cole's pivotal 1988-89 artist residency there; and an extensive chronology and professional history of the artist."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis After Silence by : Avram Finkelstein
Download or read book After Silence written by Avram Finkelstein and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-06-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in the 1980s AIDS epidemic, six gay activists created one of the most iconic and lasting images that would come to symbolize a movement: a protest poster of a pink triangle with the words “Silence = Death.” The graphic and the slogan still resonate today, often used—and misused—to brand the entire movement. Cofounder of the collective Silence = Death and member of the art collective Gran Fury, Avram Finkelstein tells the story of how his work and other protest artwork associated with the early years of the pandemic were created. In writing about art and AIDS activism, the formation of collectives, and the political process, Finkelstein reveals a different side of the traditional HIV/AIDS history, told twenty-five years later, and offers a creative toolbox for those who want to learn how to save lives through activism and making art.
