Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanical Engineering of Power Plants This book has been undertaken with two distinct objects in view, and according to a principle suggested by these objects. The first and primary intention is to provide a book to serve as a textbook in class-room work in a University which makes the education of engineers a part of its duty. This object has given the book its form and has determined its arrangement. It must have been observed by every instructor that the most enthusiastic class of students who follow engineering in the schools are those who have had a previous experience in the shop or in the power house which has made them familiar with the conditions which there prevail, and has brought to their attention questions for which they have sought to find answers. It is the wish of its projector that. So far as that condition can be met by any book whatever, this book should put all students of engineering somewhat upon the footing of these fortunate persons. It must therefore present the machinery and appliances of the power house before the reader's mind from the practical or experimental side, and make him familiar with the power plant in its various forms, and seek to familiarize him with the solutions which experi ence and good judgment have proposed for problems of this sort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Engineering The field embraced by the title is a large one and it has been necessary to limit the treatment to essential elements. Much of the matter contained in the author's original notes, including that relat ing to, steam engine design, valve gears, steam boiler design, and the like, has therefore been omitted. The numerous references appear ing throughout the text and the appended bibliographies, which have been carefully compiled, are depended upon to extend the scope of the work. The standard codes of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for conducting engine and boiler trials are in frequent demand by engineers and have therefore been included as an appendix. Authorities have been freely consulted and extensive use made of current engineering literature, due acknowledgment being made by footnote or reference whenever possible. The matter included is representative of American practice and no effort has been made to include any other except in a few special cases. The author wishes to express his obligations to Prof. Raymond Burnham for many valuable suggestions and corrections, and to Mrs. Julia Beveridge, librarian at Armour Institute, for assistance in compiling references. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plants: Their Design and Construction Frequently engineers and others in charge of a manufacturing business, be it a mill, factory or electric generating station, are called upon to design and purchase a steam power plant or parts of it when their knowledge of the machinery that goes into such a plant is more or less limited, and without being able to obtain the benefit of the advice of a competent consulting engineer. It is hoped that this book will be of special value to this class and of some value to all interested in steam power-plant construction. Part of the text appeared in a series of articles in the engineer ing record, and when the demand for them seemed to warrant their' being published in book form they were thoroughly revised and considerable new matter added. A number of the illustrations have been selected from articles printed in the engineering record during the last two or three years descriptive of steam power-plant construction. They are reprinted without the text that accompanied them, thinking they would be suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Steam Engineer's Handbook is volume that began for tradesmen in the early 20th century. Small, straightforward and satisfactory to requirements. It begins with practical mathematical guidance which could benefit any elementary student of applied mathematics. Volumes of cylinders, cubes and oblongs and equations for the measurement of pressure within a pipe or boiler. The contents hardly stop there however, and the reader can expect a practical guide to relevant chemistry, a construction brief on the major types of furnace and stern directive on how to obtain quality steam. It is likely this comprehensive approach that kept this book in use for engineers until later in the century and keeps it relevant to this day. This book was intended to be, in its author's words, 'A convenient reference book for all persons interested in Steam Boilers, Steam Engines, Steam Turbines and the other Auxiliary appliances and Machinery of Power plants'. Calculated to be a handbook in the literal sense this book is academic without the faintest trace of elitism and optimistic about the possibility of solving just about any steam engine, boiler or auxiliary system problem. The scope was ambitious from the start but it keeps this book fascinating. At the time of writing these technologies did not simply heat homes, baths or meals for society. It pushed steamships across the Atlantic and powered cross continental trains to cut through the unbroken landscape. This technology was reaching the world and bringing it within our grasp. This book stowed away in the pockets of the engineers as they went. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Fuel Oil and Steam Engineering: A Practical Treatise Dealing With Fuel Oil, for the Central Station Man, the Power Plant Operator, the Mechanical Engineer and the Student The rapidity with which the first edition of this book was exhausted has exceeded the fondest expectations of its writers. The field of fuel oil in its uses in steam electric generation, though an important one, is somewhat narrow in the number of people involved in its study. The early exhaustion of the first edition, however, has given the authors an opportunity to re-write the book and to add many new and interesting advances that have been made during the three year period since the first edition appeared upon the market. We are particularly grateful to Prof. L. S. Marks of Harvard University, to Prof. W. F. Durand of Stanford University; Mr. C. R. Weymouth, chief engineer of Charles C. Moore & Co.; Messrs. R. J. C. Wood and H. L. Doolittle of the Southern California Edison Company; Mr. E. A. Rogers, chief engineer of steam electric generation for the New Cornelia Copper Co.; Mr. E. H. Peabody, consulting engineer; Prof. E. H. Lockwood of Yale; Dr. D. S. Jacobus, advisory engineer of the Babcock and Wilcox Company; and Mr. J. E. Woodbridge of Ford, Bacon and Davis, for valuable information, helpful suggestions, and a kindly and encouraging attitude for further efforts in the compilation of this work. Many of the newer portions of this work have first appeared in print either in the columns of the Electrical World or the Journal of Electricity, and to these two publications we are grateful for the interest and kindly suggestions they have given to us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam Engine and Turbine: A Text-Book for Engineering Colleges Viewing the steam plant as a whole, a line is drawn between the members that have to do with the generation and impartation of heat, and those concerned with its conversion into work through the agency of steam. In other words, the furnace and boiler, with their acces scries, are taken to constitute a subject for treatment elsewhere, except that allusion is freely made to their functions. But on the side of the steam machine a comprehensive presentation is undertaken: to the writer it appears that the study of the piston engine and of the turbine can most effectively and profitably be combined in a single course. It is assumed that the student approaches the subject with at least a general knowledge of the form and working of the steam plant, and with a good preparation in the elements of physics and of mechanics. All deductions along the latter lines begin, however, with basal facts or principles, so that the book shall be self-contained on that side. In the matter of thermodynamics, which is carried only so far as it is of immediate use and application, a special effort is made to develop con cepts and ideas, not merely to build up a mathematical, abstract strue ture on a few axioms. An excess of mathematics is avoided, preference being largely given to graphical methods. Many numerical examples illustrate and enforce the text, emphasize the quantitative side of the subject, and will suggest problems for class-room use. TO Mr. W. Chilton and Mr. J. M. Newton, B. Se., Of the Brush Electrical Engineering Company, a special meed Of thanks is due for the results Of some Of their experiments on blading. The general scheme of this volume was decided on after much consideration, and the author finally adopted the plan of giving, without prior proof, important rules and formulas in a shape convenient for immediate practical application. The demonstrations are proceeded with later, in the belief that they will be the more readily followed by the average reader, when he has previously been impressed with the utility of the result.
