Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meaning and Value of Mysticism It is assumed that the English character is alien to Mysticism - that we have no sympathy as a nation for this kind of religion. The facts do not bear out this view. There is no race, I think, in which there is a richer vein of idealism, and a deeper sense of the mystery of life, than our own. And so far from it being true that Great Britain has produced but few mystics, the subject might be adequately studied from English writers alone. On the more intellectual side we have (without going back to Scotus Erigena) the Cambridge Platonists, Law and Coleridge; of devotional mystics we have attractive examples in Hilton and Julian of Norwich; while in verse the lofty idealism and strong religious bent of our race have produced a series of poet-mystics such as no other country can rival. Book Synopsis Mysticism and Meaning: Multidisciplinary Perspectives by : Alex S. Kohav
Download or read book Mysticism and Meaning: Multidisciplinary Perspectives written by Alex S. Kohav and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume investigates the question of meaning of mystical phenomena and, conversely, queries the concept of "meaning" itself, via insights afforded by mystical experiences. The collection brings together researchers from such disparate fields as philosophy, psychology, history of religion, cognitive poetics, and semiotics, in an effort to ascertain the question of mysticism's meaning through pertinent, up-to-date multidisciplinarity. The discussion commences with Editor's Introduction that probes persistent questions of complexity as well as perplexity of mysticism and the reasons why problematizing mysticism leads to even greater enigmas. One thread within the volume provides the contextual framework for continuing fascination of mysticism that includes a consideration of several historical traditions as well as personal accounts of mystical experiences: Two contributions showcase ancient Egyptian and ancient Israelite involvements with mystical alterations of consciousness and Christianity's origins being steeped in mystical praxis; and four essays highlight mysticism's formative presence in Chinese traditions and Tibetan Buddhism as well as medieval Judaism and Kabbalah mysticism. A second, more overarching strand within the volume is concerned with multidisciplinary investigations of the phenomenon of mysticism, including philosophical, psychological, cognitive, and semiotic analyses. To this effect, the volume explores the question of philosophy's relation to mysticism and vice versa, together with a Wittgensteinian nexus between mysticism, facticity, and truth; language mysticism and "supernormal meaning" engendered by certain mystical states; cognitive-poetic analysis of mystical poetry; and a semiotic scrutiny of some mystical experiences and their ineffability. Finally, the volume includes an assessment of the so-called New Age authors' contention of the convergence of scientific and mystical claims about reality. The above two tracks are appended with personal, contemporary accounts of mystical experiences, in the Prologue; and a futuristic envisioning, as a fictitious chronicle from the time-to-come, of life without things mystical, in the Postscript. The volume contains fourteen chapters; its international contributors are based in Canada, Israel, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MYSTICISM, in the wide and somewhat loose sense in which the term is commonly used, may be considered as the final outcome of a congenital desire for knowledge which appears in all animate creatures. In children and savages, as also in the lower animals, it takes the rudimentary form of sensitive curiosity; in more fully developed rational natures it becomes the desire to understand the inner nature of things and finally extends itself to that obscure region, dimly recognised by all men, which lies beyond the sphere of things, and of the senses by which things are perceived. But knowledge is of two kinds—abstract and concrete, or experimental and theoretical. Aeterna Press

Book excerpt: First published in 1911, "Mysticism" is the seminal work on the subject by noted English Christian mystic and author Evelyn Underhill. The book is divided into two parts which examine both the history and meaning of mysticism and how it can be a part of one's daily life and spiritual practice. In the first part, "The Mystic Fact", Underhill explores the theological, psychological, and philosophical underpinnings of mysticism from a historical perspective. Underhill rejected the association often made between mysticism and magic or the occult and sought to clear up the many misunderstandings and confusions surrounding the topic. She contended that mysticism should be viewed as a legitimate psychological phenomenon and an important part of spirituality and spiritual leadership. In the second part, "The Mystic Way", Underhill examines the application of mysticism in one's life as a means for spiritual growth. She argues that incorporating mystical practices can help one achieve a more loving and creative life. Underhill's "Mysticism" remains a widely read and hugely influential work on the historical importance of this little understood practice. It is both a fantastic introduction to the search for spirituality through mysticism and an almost encyclopedic examination of the subject. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
Book Synopsis Mysticism: Its Meaning and Message by : Georgia Elma Harkness
Download or read book Mysticism: Its Meaning and Message written by Georgia Elma Harkness and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how mysticism can be distinguished from religion in general, and how its main types can be known. The author explores the biblical roots of Christian mysticism in the Gospel of John and in the Christ-mysticism which pervades Paul's letters. The author also interprets some of the great Christian devotional and mystical writers. These include the early and medieval mystics (St. Augustine, St. Bernard, and St. Francis), the Spanish mystics (Ignatius of Loyola, Teresa, and John of the Cross), the emergence of Protestant piety (Martin Luther, John Calvin, Jacob Boehme, Lancelot Andrewes, George Fox, William Law, and the Wesleys), and twentieth century mystics (Frank Laubach, Kagawa, Teilhard de Chardin, and Dag Hammarskjöld). The author also surveys more contemporary neo-mysticism, including the pseudo mysticism of the occult, the drug culture, Vedanta and Yoga, Zen Buddhism, celebration, the Jesus movement, and speaking in tongues.
